Okay before you guys start the flame war (Which will be started eventually sadly
) for those who disliked ME2's story, what did you disliked about it?I mean i know it doesnt have a huge mystery like the first one but still i think its pretty well done especially due to the fact that those who enjoy the story can get deep in it with conflicts like the geth quarian war,the genophage and so on, for people like me who enjoy the story and universe i found it very enriching and deeper than the first one,yet those who just want tackle the "main story" can do that and just focus on killing collectors and stuff like that and whose to say that ME2 doesnt have its surprises i was quite shocked when i realized who where the collectors in the first place,so its true its not a perfect story but i think its as deep as the first one its just that getting deeper has to be on your own and not by the developers invisible hands(please post your opinions with respect as i respect all your opinions and would like that my opinion is respected as well (: )
There are three main reasons for me:
1) Sequel. This is supposed to be the second part of a trilogy. "Shepard's story" You even get to import your saves from ME 1 to continue this story. Remember how ME 1 ended?
"Shepard's right. Humanity is ready to do its part. United with the rest of the Council, we have the strength to overcome any challenge! When the reapers come, we must stand side-by-side! We must fight against them as one, and together, we will drive them back into dark space!"
What happens? Shepard goes off to find ways to defeat the Reapers? Explores the outer limits of the Mass Relay network? Look for ancient weapons or preProthean records of previous harvestings? Not so much.
Pretty much everything you did was rendered pointless. Shepard dies (but gets better). His accomplishments are swept under the rug. Former squadmates seems to have had brain transplants ("Traitor!!" and "I can flay you alive WITH MY MIND!"). The Council sems to have completely forgotten what you did exactly. Most of the choices you made, big or small, are reduced to emails on your personal terminal.ME 2 was about as much a sequel to ME 1 as the new Battlestar Galactica series is a sequel to the old one.
2) Collectors.
The Collectors were actually a pretty col villain group. Especially given their secret. They could have made for a really compelling tragic villain. Unfortunately they seem to appear just long enough to demonstrate that there is in fact a storyline in here somewhere. Three missions, that's it. If I was Shepard, I'd be wanting to learn everything I could about them. What is their connection to the Reapers? What is their interest in humans? How advanced is their tech? What do the other races in the Terminus Systems know about them? Instead we get one big info dump from EDI and that's it. Even the "big reveal" does nothing for the story. The Collectors are just targets, just like any other merc group we fight. The Collectors are, imo, a huge opportunity wasted.
3) the Squad.
The squad is, apparantly, the whole thrust of te story "recruit a squad and earn their loyalty" Okay. Not my first choice for a story, I'll admit, but workable. The characters are, in general, interesting (though seem to more resemble a superhero team than a squad of elite soldiers). Except, their not a team. A team works together, interacts with each other. Some get along and others don't. Part of earning their loyalty is learning to mesh these unique characters into a cohesive whole. We don't see that, save for exactly two personality clashes.. We do see their personalities in one-on-one talks with Shepard and their loyalty missions. During these missions the third member of the squad is oddly silent, despite having he potential to make some compelling observations. So really it's still just Shepard and squadmate one-on-one time.
In short, there is no 'squad", no "team" just a bunch of individuals who only answer to Shepard. If this was supposed to be the main point, it should have been done much, much better.
These are my reasons. Agree or disagree as you will.
