There are those who, despite playing a STATIC PRE-MADE character, STILL want him to be silent.

Those people need to go back to Pen and Paper.

The correct verb is "affect," your pun fails.

It's not quite like that. These people have an unreasonable hatred of voice acting because it's the reason that they're getting a static, pre-made character. That said, I'll be sad to see most of the dialogue and a fair bit of the customization go, but Bioware's more than making up for it by allowing us to craft our characters during the story itself. In the period of a decade, your character has room for growth, despair, love and hope. Instead of predetermining your personality prior to the game, Bioware is making your character grow during the game. At least that's how I hope it will pan out.

Because everyone is so hell-bent on hurting my delicate feelings, I'll clarify. Loss of characterization and extra dialogue is a very, very bad thing. However, right now, Bioware is attempting to fit nine novels worth of voice acting into TOR, and there's no reason they can't have one (albeit detailed) novel's worth of voice acting in DA2. Everyone else in the world is already voiced, and it wouldn't be too hard to simply add audio to the main character's lines.

The one thing I don't like about voice acting is that you're character becomes the same as everyone else's, and ideally I'd want half a dozen different voices to choose from. However, that's not going to happen, and I know it.

By the way, for everyone who's digging their heels in so quickly at the mention of voice acting, it's obviously going to happen, so making claims such as, "I won't buy it!", and "I'd rather fry myself in a toaster!" sound a trifle petulant.

So if a game takes away all the aspects that i like about it i should still buy it,please think before speaking.

I'm more thinking of fantasy hack n' slashers now. Like games are now going in reverse. Only thing that's better is graphics, but quality has gone downhill.

Yah i went there.
With the main character being a human male or female,  more cinematic story telling(Mass effect), the possibility of a greatly altered conversation system it seems to be a reasonable assumption.Or even the possibilty  of the main character being voiced.

I love dragon age, not mass effect i don't want the game to be tweaked because they think those types of changes worked well for that game. I want what was in dragon age origins to be expanded on not "streamlined" to appeal to more people or so it can be released as quickly as possible.

Thats my worry as well, they going the ME2 route

I loved ME1 and even though I didnt  want to play fantasy I loved DA

But from quote I read it does sound like DA is going a more ME2 direction and thats going to be a major slap in the face to Bioware rPG crowd that first lost their sci fi title to shooter kids and now might lose their fantasy title to more action kid type players.

Will wait and see but the early qotes are causeing some worry

I haven't read much of this thread yet, so not sure if it has been said.

I like Dragon Age because I'm able to create my own character, and do what I want as my character, and speak as I would like to as that character. As much as I liked Mass Effect, I never felt like I was playing my own character. I would pick dialogue that seemed appropriate, and Shepard would say something completely different. The voice definitely ruined the immersion for me, and the whole Paragon/Renegade system really got on my nerves, the way it practically screams at you saying exactly what's going to happen after you chose your dialogue. Overall, rather than in Dragon Age when I would be saying "I did this...", when referring to Mass Effect, I would say something like "I had Shepard do this...".

-I want to play my own character, and imagine a voice for them - Pre-set voices really restrict the immersion for me.

-I want to be able to chose real dialogue options, not the tone my character is going to speak in.

-I want my character personality to be what I choose - not good, neutral, or evil.

Dragon Age does these, which is why it is one of my favourite games. There's no need to change it.

Personally i don't want dragon age 2 to be voiced,If they go the fully voiced path its very likely that the amount of choice and side conversations will be greatly limited, besides that i don't want to be called Hawke all the time.

I haven't seen the link to verify, but enough people are saying it's fully voiced that it seems likely. I was expecting less choice and side conversation anyway, just based on Awakening and the DLCs, it seems to be the way they have chosen to go. This makes it virtually certain.

I just don't understand why they took all those years making an innovative RPG if they were going to scrap the model immediately. I could understand it if people hated it, but that's not the case.

I agree if the first game had been that way I may not of minded (I also may not of played it)  but making something one way that worked very well then getting rid of much of what made it work vexes me.   Now the game may still turn out well but I would rather have the original stuff expanded on rather than removed for something else.

I
think your a bit off.  Many people here dislike the voice acting
because they have an idea of what the character they make will sound
like in their heads.  Or they prefer to think of the character as an
avatar for them selves and having voiced dialogue cuts the immersion.
I like voice acting but for this type of game (judging based on
origins) I would prefer he was silent, unless there are several voices
to pick from and it has a tone modifier like metal gear online and
soul calibur 4.  That said even if it had all that it would not likely
have the same amount of dialogue as the first game and to stepping
backwards is not acceptable.

As for what you said about crafting
your character as the  over a time and all that.  That sounds good but
its hard to say if it will turn out that way.  I would say sings point
to no.

I have no problem with voice acting, but I do not like the idea of taking away customization for the sake of voices. I want to play MY character, not some pre-made character.

Yeah, I want to play my character, not the son of a prominent noble family, or a mage trapped in a tower, or an urchin with an arranged marriage, or a morbidly sick forest dweller, or a castless criminal.

Imagine this as the human commoner origin, and literally nothing should be different.

The mute and empty shell of DA:O was my least favorite part of the game. Sure the voice acting is never going to be exactly what you want it to be, but you can still tell your own story in Mass Effect 1 or 2.

Anyways, Mass Effect 2 is the best RPG I ever played, closely followed by DA:O. If they want to use some of what they learned from ME:2 to make the same quality leap that they made from ME to ME2 in Dragon Age, I'm all for it.

This is the one game company where I just have faith that they know what they're doing. This game will be amazing, and much much better than DA:O which was already great. Can't wait For March. Can't wait for that Gameinformer to get placed in my mail box.

I love Mass Effect. But that doesn't mean that i want Dragon Age 2 to just be a medieval version of Mass Effect. Let Dragon Age be Dragon Age, and Mass Effect be Mass Effect. Two different games, each wonderful in their own way.

Hey guys, new to the forum.

After hearing the news of Dragon Age 2 confirmation a couple of days ago like many I was elated, if not surprised, and the first thing I did after having a little dance that would of made Rick Astley cringe in my room was browse these forums for other opinions and views.

Now, as a lover of RPG and JRPG games Dragon Age: Origins seemed to come out of nowhere and capture my heart, corny as it sounds. After losing myself in the world of The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind a good few years ago now, I'd been longing for an RPG that stands up to it. Oblivion, while a good game in it's own right, didn't have half of the charm of it's predecessor, and Two Worlds was the equivalent of a two fingered gesture aimed at all those that paid £40 or so for it after being sucked in by the "Oblivion on steroids!" nonsense on the back cover. I can only imagine the person that actually quoted that has all the intelligence of a jellyfish.

After reading what bit of information was made available about the game I was a little sceptical along with excited. This is a new story so I really have no gripes with playing a completely different character (though the name Hawke sounds about as subtle and classy as an 84 year old Jenna Jameson having a flashback of her life) and I'm sure those looking for closure with there Grey Warden will have the chance to find it in the form of a DLC before DA2 hits the shops.

However, I've read a LOT on this forum about DA2 going in the direction of it's sci-fi relation Mass Effect 2. Now don't get me wrong, the Mass Effect series are fantastic games but neither (especially the 2nd installment) captivated me in the way that Dragon Age: Origins did and although it's only speculation of course the thought of playing Mass Effect only with swords and sorcery in a different setting scares me. I mean really scares me.

Chris Priestly.. Bioware.. as my, and many others I should imagine, favorite and most trusted developer, PLEASE do not sell us short with this game and make it into some Mass Effect clone with all the personality of roadkill. I beg you.

I sincerely hope that Dragon Age has taken a hint from Mass Effect, and will be fully voiced. The fact that the main character will be known as Hawke is an indication of this (In ME everyone goes around calling you Shepard despite your rather feeble protests that you have another name), and hopefully Bioware will go ahead with this. DA:O was fantastic, but the effect of the conversation mechanic was blunted by the fact that your character pretty much just stood there and got talked to. I ended up saying my character's lines in lieu of a real voice, but it's not the same.

Well this is the game, the two games are totally different, merging them is not a good idea.
You use your mind when doing this, the voice in your head when you read it (Or outloud) is what it sounds like. I really don't want it fully voiced, I really don't want it like Mass Effect, it is fine the way it is. Image IPB
