I certainly hope the next companion reveal is an elf.
I really wish to have an elf companion since I can't be one.

Same here, even though my first two playthroughs on DA:O were human, I do love the elves and I hope they're well represented in DA2 as well!

My very first playthrough was a Dalish Rogue and I loved every minute of it :)

While I want a Male Elf LI, we probably wont since we already had Zevran in Origins.

But I would be EXTREMELY happy for just an elf companion.

I thought at one point they had said there'd be at least two companions of every race, but I could be totally wrong. It'd be nice to have an elf girl romance <3

I think it's at least two of every class, not race.

not going to buy because not role play more linear cant chose race ,name ,where's different classes monk, priest druid etc ,we all read d&d warhammer etc i want a game where i make the story .i got all the games from baldurs gate to dragon age origins this game go backwards ,to much on graphics nowdays thats why wii has taken off playability is more important , role play gone backwards will wait for neverwinter online :(

You can roleplay, you can change your first name, you can change your appearance + voice, you will have the 3 main classes and from there you may get an "sub-class".
Don't judge the game yet, there are many things that are still being done.
Its true that Bioware is investing more in something new, but thats ins't a bad thing, we have to give a step to atcually know if its bad or not.
The fact that you can't play as other races have been explained millions of times, Origins like its name, was the introduction of the DA world, to understand each race, their ideals and customes. If it wans't for that you would't even be able to play them in the first place. They allowed you to that, now we need to move on.

Also this is the story of Hawke, an human who will change the DA unniverse, it could be a dwarf, it could be an elf, but its a human. In fact, I like that way, if they made the main character as a Dwarf I would've been pissed, because I don't like dwarfs.
There will always be people who will complain about it, so they opted for the "lesser" evil.

The start is decided the end is just a choice, one of maybe 8 in total . In Oblivion made character that was a wanderer never bothered with main quest at all was only there to make money done all little side quests and guild plus tomb raiding had bought houses and shops never finished main  still got up to very high level  ,also had hero type done main didn't bother with sides etc, you can level up in Oblivion without fighting ie:  sneak past people  just by talking to npcs , picking locks etc where has roleplay go on from here ? downloaded 100s off mods for Oblivion from houses to pet shops to mini quests in fact still play Oblivion .Done dragon age +awakening once could not be bothered again .Only thing missing from Oblivion was companion but had tiger roam around with character instead

Sorry for going on but they want us to buy their game + dlc +expansions starting at £40 +and there not bothered about role playing ,ie back to dice and paper. i have always played an  elven archer stealth being v important ,in the elder scrolls 4 the first person camera excellent ,brilliant, superb looking down the arrow watching your prey (brilliant) ,make the kill then going back into the shadows and waiting for the next to walk past ,you where there in the game ( you cant see behind you which is right ).so you crept past to see how many there looked for a spot where you can pick them off one by one pulled back your bow string ,zoomed in on your target ,then let fire to see head shot throw him accross the room lol. archery in dragon age is ****  sorry  but thats how i feel all i want is to escape into the game live the game when playing  .Bioware  living on baldurs gate pedestal one of the best  games ever let alone role play also loved icewind dale but not gone forward (backwards) ?

I know and I understand, but we are talking about diferent games. Bioware is trying to polish DA their own way, for better or for worst, only time will tell, people have diferent tastes and only after the critics and sales they will improve.

Oblivion is a special game for many people, I tried to play it twice and twice I dind't finished it, there is something missing on it, I don't want to download 1 terrabyte of mods for the game! That is nearly installing another game on it(wich is annoying because almost everything needs a mod to fix/improve).
So you don't play Oblivion, you play a bunch of mods.

Dragon Age is one type of game and Oblivion is another, you can't compare every game to have the same characteristics. You have to do like us, wait for the final product, play a demo, watch reviews and gameplay videos on youtube. If you still don't like it, then don't buy it, simple as that.

Wait, what? Who is the first companion revealed?

EDIT: Nvm, I was thinking in a "romance" companion that was might've been revealed.

Looking at the screenshots for the inventory and skills seem very limited. I'm hoping the RPG elements are not treated like Mass Effect 2 which for me was a disaster.

The screenshots I saw - presumably we're thinking of the same ones, Russian language - looked like the classes had just as much depth as DA:O with the exception that archery and DW were removed from warriors.  Which we've known for a while.

So, there is no pants slot in the inventory screen?

Nope, not that I can think of a Bioware game that had one.  Still, I could just be drawing a blank.

I guess the screenshots are from the new PC interface?

i hope theres a werewolf companion.............like that will ever happen (would be cool if Hawke could catch the sickness from a pack of werewolves yet retain his sanity..........actually that would be awesome)

honestly, im hoping for a Qunari or Dwarf (Humans bore me, Elves do to but not as much as a human)

i am wondering.....if you transport your savegames from Origins ( i know that developers sad you will be transfering the world you created in Origins and Awakening), will your Grey Warden from Origins or Awakening appear....or maybe he will only be mentioned?!!! i am so curios about this. will your Grey Warden from Origins ever have any other role in Dragon Age world.......

i think it depends on your decision on withc hunt, because i choose to go with morrigan into the other world so the chances to see him are few

i also think that...but i somehow ( also ) think that the story of your Grey Warden isnt finished despite your choices at the end of Witch Hunt ( i also had the same ending as you in WH)

the story of your warden is pretty much left unfinished....thats it.

I highly doubt that will happen.

Reasons:
-DA2 might not load DA mods if you're using them.
-There are so many options about how the Warden looks that the devs might not feel like passing them to DA2.
-Even if the Warden did showed up, his/her face would be covered by an helmet.
-Hawke's life might not cross with the Warden's face-to-face, even though he/she passed by Lothering.
-Its way easier for the devs to just not show the Warden.
-Depending on the ending you choose on witch hunt and origins itself, you might never even see him/her again.

Yes :)
even though I would not pursue the romance I think it would be cool. Especially since we have never had a permanent female elf companion.

Though this idea of mine probably wont happen, one way that they could make the Warden appear is to upload your save file and then recreate your Warden with the DA2 character creator. But this idea is improbable.

Yeah I always thought it would be cool to see the Warden even from a distance, just walking by, but after hearing them talk about returning characters/cameos and making them look like they did in Origins, I don't think it's very likely they'd be able to come up with something that could do it dynamically, at least not well enough.

I don't think mods are a big deal...a very small percentage of players even used mods, and everyone who did should know full well that their mods aren't going to be supported.

Edit: here's the post I was thinking of...

Yeah, I'm just curious (and this isn't necessarily aimed at you) why if there were plans on bringing back certain characters, there wasn't some functionality built into the new head morph system to utilize some of the Origins faces, at least structurally speaking? I'd just hate to have some returning human character like an Alistair, Nathaniel Howe, or Morrigan show back up and only be able to recognize them based on their hair style or only after they open their mouth and you recognize the voice actor.............

Fortunately we have our methods of approximating one to the other and getting it close, should we need to. That's what i was referring to, in part, about not being 100% identical but still sharing the structural and cosmetic similarities and being recognizable. However, putting all the points about why they might look different aside, when dealing with two models of varying poly counts and vertex numbers its a little more challenging to make one look like the other at a microscopic level. The topology and flow of the DA:O mesh is not as optimized for animation as the DA2 ones and therefore may not accurately wrap cleanly along the same lines, curves and shapes of eachother, particularly when speaking. There will always be subtle differences.

As far as Alistair and Nathaniel Howe or Morrigan and other key npcs are concerned, should they ever re-appear in Dragon Age with the new head system, you might double-take, but my hope is you'll be pleasantly relieved (maybe even a little excited!).

Alistair and Nathaniel gonna look totally unrecognizable? Lelianna and Wynne gonna change bra sizes and wear thigh high boots (like Isabella and Flemmeth too if you look at screenshots and concept art)? Sten gonna have horns?

Any character from DAO is going to look different, yes. We can't simply import their face and appearance, or they would look very much out of place next to the new models and art style. So if and when we do them, they're face needs to be re-made using the new face morphing system and they need to use existing body/armor models (unless they're getting a unique one, like Flemeth has).

The more I think about it, the more all signs seem to point to no...

Actually, I can think of one place where you MIGHT see the Warden.  At the very start of the game in Lothering. It might be kind of cool to see the Warden, Alistair and Morrigan walking past, in the background.  They don't have to be a major part of the beginning, since they don't mean anything to Hawke.  Why should they? As far as you know, they are just another set of refugees.

This is the best thread I've read. Thank you!

Between this and David's podcast, I'm feeling much better about how deep the dialogue/npc interactions would be with my main character.
After ME2, and the DA:O DLC I was very worried. I'm still nervous, but it seems like they're trying to do a lot to enhance the DA:O experience with  this:

There will be romanceable characters [Greg Zeschuk interview - Page 3], [FAQ]
"...the DLC from Origins will be tied to this game as well. You will see characters from that DLC in this game." [Mike Laidlaw - G4 article]
Hawke's party will still be limited to 4 (Hawke + 3 companions). [Dev Chat - 12:58] 08/22
There will be at least 2 of each class as potential companions [GameStar Sept 2010 article]
Party composition may affect dialogue with NPCs [GameStar Sept 2010 article]
The left side of the dialogue wheel may feature opportunities for companions to interact with the NPC Hawke is speaking to. [GameStar Sept 2010 article]
It is likely that Nathaniel Howe will appear, as he spent time in Kirkwall before the events of Awakening. [Mike Laidlaw]
"You can even be openly hostile to your party members and still unlock combat bonuses." [GameInformer article] 08/08
Hawke can get quests from and even romance companions regardless of where you are on the friendship/rivalry scale you are. But it may play out differently. [Mary Kirby] 09/15

The dialogue wheel will have up to 5 choice options and up to 5 "investigate options" (to leave room for "investigate" and "return" options, respectively) [Craig Graff], [David Gaider]
There will be an icon that illustrates the tone of each dialogue response (snarky, aggressive, peaceful, romantic, etc.) [Mary Kirby], [Destructoid]
There are "personality choices" and "action choices." The tone icons for the former affect your personality, and depending on your choices, you will develop a "dominant personality" that can affect how Hawke delivers lines. The icons for the latter indicate intent. [David Gaider]

Party member approval is based on your actions, not your personality/tone. [David Gaider]
Hawke will participate in party banter to a limited extent. [David Gaider - 6:37] 09/09

-------

I'm also really excited at the prospect of seeing our characters/old NPC's from DA:O original, even if from an objective view, in a way that offers more depth to what we already knew.
Ex: 'behind the scenes' when Alistair got that rose. ;} Or Lelianna went to the bridge to wait.  Or even after DA:O to include our character choices, since DA2 is a longer timeframe.

Any word on this kind of hat-tipping/story tie ins? Or am I just missing where it was posted?

I guess it would be nice to see tie-ins to our choices, not just from a huge world view, but also personal to our specific character's personal decisions in the most manageable way possible.

Like the DLC Witch Hunt, if Warden did follow her into the mirror, I'm hoping at least both can make a cameo. :P<_<
