If he's just a fleeing commoner and can't even stand to help save his homeland, what chance is Hawke going to have at uniting anything?

Since we run away from Lothering, I want an escape option to be available for every battle. :D

Right as the fight starts, you get 4 options-

Fight
Bag
Switch Pokémon
Flee

That's the whole point of rags to riches, nobody to somebody, coming from nothing and becoming something.

That's like asking how a baby can eventually become a King.

It's funny that being all heroic is being treated as though it's the baseline.

Thousands of people were fleeing the Darkspawn. Why is that so unimaginably cowardly for this one person? It is 100% completely reasonable, rational behavior.

If he's going to "become" a hero, he's got to start somewhere. And generally during a hero's "humble beginning," he's not already equipped and capable enough to single-handedly defeat an entire invading army. That sort of defeats the purpose of telling a story.

I'm going to Godwin the thread. Sorry, but I am.
Would you call Jewish refugees fleeing the ****s cowardly?

Edit: sheesh, censoring. Um, okay, "the angry, intolerant Third-Reich types who did some bad things during the 30's and 40's in Europe."

Exactly. The Warden was an underdog at first, but Mike Hawke has the potential to be an even bigger underdog with that commoner origin.

So he goes from having a spine of jelly to superhero almost overnight. That makes a lot of sense.

The game takes place over the course of ten years.  Have you even bothered reading the information that's been given about the game?

Fleeing an approaching army means you have a spine of jelly? And overnight? That's a long damn night if it spans 10 years.

I mean seriously. It's not like he's fleeing from the local bully who kicks sand in his face. It's an effing BLIGHT. Yeah, how dare he not defeat them on his own!

It probably takes the character that long to rout to the Free Marches.

If you were bothered enough by the possibility, you might want to refer to a map. The Free Marches are in fact directly north of Ferelden. It might take, liek, a month to get there. As a matter of fact, it probably would take less than one year to get to anywhere in the map of Thedas that's been provided.

The game takes place over the course of a decade. Jeez, the point of the thread is what we KNOW.

Try not to get the image in your mind riddled with lies and assumptions. It adds nothing to your posts.

It could take him a whole ten years before he finally reaches his peak.

I had an idea: Maybe the prologue (the origin) will be the evacuation from Lothering.

Well. I mean. Even if you played as a female dwarf/elf mage, you were not really an underdog. You were a Warden.

We went all over Fereldan back and forth over and over and that story didn't take that long.

So since the Free Marches are right above Fereldan, it wouldn't take forever for Hawke to get to them.

He/She's still got about a decade to become a hero.

The lowest of the low in the Origins were the City Elves, Dalish Elves, and at the bottom of the pile the Dwarf Commoner.

Now that's really rags to riches.

If he's a coward with no sense of duty to his homeland, that's not going to change much. Tigers don't change their stripes. No, he doesn't have to face the Blight alone, there's an army in Denerim and the Wardens are forming another army. Peasants have been known to take up arms against invading forces...that's where guerrilla warfare comes into play.

It takes two weeks to cross Fereldan, so I assume the entire game took place in a little over a month.

Something like that, according to Fergus Cousland.

What a world view you have.  As a matter of fact, people *do* change.  And guess what, those changes can make for a drastically more interesting story than if the same story were about an individual who never changes.  I wonder if BioWare has picked up on that, yet.  If so, they should probably use it in Dragon Age 2, but unfortunately, it looks like the coward they've cast for the lead role is just going to be the same person through the whole game.  Hey, does anyone have any idea who this Champion of Kirkwall is, yet?  I mean, it can't be Hawke, he's just a coward with no spine.

It's like talking to a brick wall. Why does running = cowardice?

Again, would you call Jews fleeing the Third Reich cowards? Shouldn't they have stood up to them? Sought out an Allied army and tried to join up?

You don't even know if he was a kid then, or if he even had weapons.

Brings up a quote from Mass Effect 2, non-spoilerific, but-

Joker-"What was I supposed to do? Break my arm at them?"

If you are unable to do anything, RUN. Its the oldest art of combat. Simply ancient. Prehistoric even. Hell, I'm sure tiny amoebas were getting as far away as they could from the giant bully amoeba.
