"Hawke meets Wesley, an injured Templar, and Aveline, his wife, while fleeing Lothering." (IGN)

An injured Templar and his wife?!?!?!?!?!

Vows of chastity, anyone?

Yea, that one has me scratching my head, too. Apparently, consistency in lore is not going to be DA's strong suit.

I don't think Templars actually took vows of chastity. Certainly they were forbidden (or at least strongly discouraged) from fraternizing with the mages they were supposed to be watching, but that's understandable, right? A commanding officer in the military isn't supposed to sleep around with his troops, but that doesn't mean he has to remain celibate period.

There is a Dialogue with Alistair that seems to indicate that they are celibate.

Do you remember where that dialogue takes place?

In any case, I'm not sure if I would consider Altaiir an accurate source of information.

Dragon Age lore is BioWare's creation, thus anything showing up in Dragon Age 2 is LORE. They gave Qnari horns and explained it. As long as it's well explained I can watch Darkspawn tap dance in Deneriem.

If you're talking about the one establishing Alistair's virginity (lampposts and so forth), then he just says it wasn't a life for rambunctious boys, and that he was raised to be a gentleman.

Leliana implies that templars had to become chantry brothers before becoming templars, thus Templars would be bidden with such vows:
-Alistair: So... let me get this straight. You were a cloistered sister?
-Leliana: You must have been a brother before you became a templar, no?
-Alistair: I never actually became a templar. I was recruited into the Grey Wardens before I took my final vows

Yeah. What with him being from another game.

That dialogue is a random one though. You get o ask him as SirOccam pointed out.

So.... it looks like the DA2 demo everyone wants is going to be the Witch Hunt DLC. :)

But are we certain that the vows they are referring to are necessarily vows of celibacy? It could just be a vow of service or something that all new Templars must make. There are any number of vows someone can make that have nothing to do with celibacy.

And according to this, the Chantry doesn't require celibacy, among its priests anyway. I don't see why Templars should be different.

However, dialog during the Magi Origin questline contradicts the Wiki entry. The source the Wiki cites says nothing about it.

But again, forbidding fraternization between Templars and Mages isn't the same thing as requiring celibacy.

Add me to the 'templars can have wives????' camp.

There's also the Templar in the Tower Quest ensnared by thoughts of having a wife and children.... and definite connotations that its a near impossible desire for him to get in the real world.

I think he's talking about Jowan and Lily dialogue. Lily says something about being given to the maker and forbidden to have other men. If Lily isn't supposed to be celibate why all the uproar about her relationship with Jowan? She isn't a templar and her job isn't to watch mages.

Yes, it's specifically stated Lily is forbidden to have relations with men. Also, Leliana states that she didn't take vows of chastity as a lay sister, strongly implying that other members of the Chantry do. Plus, dialogue with Alistair and Cullen, as well as a codex entry for one of the Templars at the Circle, strongly infer that Templars do take a vow of Chastity.

Perhaps this Templar just said "**** it!" And got himself a wife, kept it secret? That is at all possible, and gives Hawke and his Apostate sister a bit of a hold on the Templar, keeping him from reporting Bethany.

From what I've seen the only minus I see with DA2 is the fact you cant customize the look of your character, you are stuck with the default look of Hawke.

I did read the thread and I'm also going by the review that was on G4 tonight, and one of the things they mentioned was that the new DA2 will not have character customization like in DAO.

If you had read the thread you know thats wrong. You will be able to customise the look, what you won't be able to do is play as an elf or dwarf.

*sigh*

Well the evidence against me just keeps piling up. ^_^ I guess we'll have to wait and see how they explain it. Or maybe a dev will shed some light on the issue at some point.

So priests are honorary wives of the Maker in imitation of the prophet?

Correct.

Quote: Are priests required to be celebate?

No, in fact. But they may not marry."

If priests don't have to be celibate, I can't imagine templars have to.

But the prohibition against marriages is still there, and is implied or mentioned a few times in the game by various people.
