Now nothing here would really surprise you considering the price of the DLC. The only thing that really jumps out to me is the 30-50 hours that an average first time play through of the original game took then comparing that to the measly 10-12 hours than an average first time play through of Awakening took. The only reason that surprises me is because Awakening is only $10 less than the entire retail game, yet it obviously has less content. Some may argue that it's not a full game and that it's just an expansion, which is true, but again if it's not a full game why sell at such an absurd price tag?
Like I said the DLC itself isnt what bothers me. I honestly believe that 1-2 hours of content is worth $5-7 dollars. You cant really get 2 hours of entertainment anywhere else for $5 unless you factor into renting a movie or something. The thing that bothers me most is the question of will Dragon Age 2 have the same amount of content as the original game did or will it be rushed out the door with just whats needed to sell the game?
We dont have alot of information available yet but there are a few alarms that worry me. First it's going to be released less than 2 years from the release of the first game. Yes, the engine is already in place and that will remove a huge amount of design time, but can you really put together a true sequel to a game as large as Dragon Age in less than 2 years? I also get the feeling that we were going to be stuck being a human and options that were given to us during the original game are going to be thrown out the window in order to get the game out quickly.
The DLC market is a two headed coin. It provides additional support and content to an aging game, but I also think it makes the designers lazy. Bioware knows they can release little $5 2 hour content patches and make as much money as they want. Why not just make one big dlc and put a $60 price tag on it? It's already been done with Awakening and thats what bothers me about this.
Now you can say that most games these days are only 15 hours long. This is partly true ...but rpg arent. Sure the halo kids get 15 hour games, sometimes less, but those games have a solid multiplayer. Single player RPGs arent 15 hours long. We dont have action around every corner and thats the only reason Mass Effect 2 got away with being so short. They turned it into an FPS hybrid.
I wont be standing in line at walmart at midnight for this game. I'll wait for a review for it just like I did for Awakening. I still refuse to purchase Awakening until it's priced at what it's worth. If you're going to call it an expansion price it like an expansion.
I just hope Bioware does this right and doesnt shaft their fans again. It used to be my golden rule that if Bioware made it, I bought it no questions asked. Lately with the rip off that are bioware points and the lack of content that was never delivered I start to question this.
