I've read plenty about game crashes here and in the PC forum but i'll do a small run through of what's going wrong...

Originally, I had Dragon Age running on my Mac through Parallels 5 (XP SP3) and I did notice that when I booted DAO my computer fans went into overdrive when the game started. Generally, I get about 20-30 minutes gameplay before suddenly my monitor goes black. I can still hear the music / sound but my computer became completely unresponsive and I had to do a hard reboot. This happened all the time. At first I thought it might be Parallels but I searched the net for answers and no other games caused this to happen.

Then I saw DAO for Mac and I thought, it's got to work perfectly on a mac!? I bought the game and guess what? Exactly the same thing happens again!? I play for 15-20 mins then bang, black screen, sounds only, hard reboot necessary.

I know I don't have the best video card in the world (ATI Radeon X1900 XT) but I should be able to play this game ok. I can run other games with no problems. Can anyone suggest anything? I've looked at fan speed programs (smcFanControl / IStats) thinking my machine could be shutting itself down for getting too hot but I don't know what average speed my machine processors should be at! :(

I love this game and would love to play more but looking at the other questions here, I won't hold my breath waiting for a response but here's hoping! :)

SPEC:
MacPro : OS 10.6.4 : 2x3 GHz Quad-Core Intel : 8 GB Ram : ATI Radeon X1900 XT

Luckily, i'm not holding my breath...

Have sent a report to EA who've said they're looking into it. I've a feeling this is might a problem caused by the upgrade to OS 10.6.4 and it's compatibility with ATI graphics card. This blank screen has also happened with HalfLife2:Episode 1 which I bought from Stream the other day! :(

What kind of Mac do you have? The graphics card is probably getting to warm and shutting down. Make sure you have proper ventilation.

You could also try pressing cmd-option-esc to force quit the game to see if that makes you graphics return.

See base of my first post.

I think that could be the case too. Is there a way of checking this? I've installed Istat's but can't see which reading is my graphics card temp!? Any ideas please?

To be honest, that's the first thing I tried... :(

I just purchased the game, installed, but after about 10 minutes my monitor goes totally black and I have to shut down and reboot. I don't think it is video card overheating (I am fairly sensitive to the fan speed noise). My system is similar to the OP:

Mac OS 10.6.4 2 x 2.66 dual core Intel Xeon 2BG Ram

ATI Radeon X1900 512 VRAM

Please advise whether this is a known issue that is being worked on, or what settings to change in game so it continues to run. I would like to play this game, but will be looking to uninstall and get a refund if I can't get it to work soon.

My iMac stats are somewhat similar to yours ^, I have not encountered that problem myself. My game crashes only on rare occasions and I have tons of Mods installed. I must admit, I just patched to v1.03 and have had more crashes since I've installed it....go figure.

I'm still having the problem. The time it takes for the game to crash into a black screen (a hard crash, I have to force shut down the computer) varies from 10 minutes to several hours.

I've contacted tech support and we're e-mailing. They asked me to kill almost every process I had running (which left me without a finder menu or any icons whatsoever on my desktop!), to send them system specs, to check for software updates, and to run Disk Repair. I'm still waiting for someone to help troubleshoot this issue. I can see from the traffic at the forums that this board is probably only viewed by customers and not support people from Bioware...

Similar problems here. More crashes since last update and cmd-option-esc won't always force quit - I generally have to shut my Mac down. The crashes occur irregularly - maybe once every hour so it's not an enormous deal but irritating never-the-less. I don't think it's an overheating problem as the fans don't fire up.

Mac details:

Mac Pro - 2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon

6 GB Memory

OS 10.6.4

ATI Radeon HD 4870

I have the same problem.
Anyone found the reason to it yet?

Always give your specs (machine, graphic card, memory, patch version etc.) when asking this kind of question.

the last few days the constant crashes have gotten bad, so I did as someone suggested and re-installed the game. It's now worse. I can't even get past 'new game' before it crashes with the obligatory exception raised at.... error.

OS 10.6.8

Did you do a clean re-install and wiped the DA folders in /Documents and /Library/Preferences as well?

Just in case (copy paste from another topic):

First, run the Dragon Age launcher and De-Authorize your game. Then delete the Dragon Age app and the BioWare folder in your Documents. Last, hit Command+Shift+G and enter ~/Library/Preferences (copy paste the line if you don't know the ~ key on your keyboard). In the Preferences folder look for two folders called Cider Preferences and Dragon Age Origins Preferences - delete both. Now re-install the game.
