Were you listening to a song, and happened to have a raven-haired warrior suddenly appear in your mind? Were you writing on the forums, and suddenly thought about how a blonde little mage might easily best that group of enemies in that one video?

Did you simply make up a face, and, while looking at it, think of what sort of personality might live behind those eyes?

Inquiring minds want to know! <3

I always make my characters up from scratch, without inspiration from anything real-world or otherwise, at least in a conscious way. I'm sure I must be influenced sub-consciously by all sorts of things, but I don't think of them when I'm working on a character. Part of the reason for that is that I don't want my character in game to remind me of anything not DA:O; it breaks the immersion.

I simply make up a face and their personality pops in my mind :P
then I make some changes to make them look more like the personalities I had in mind.

edit: there were too many mistakes here... I'm embarassed...

My mage is loosely based off of Jason Isaacs.  The rest just came to me.

I think of the kind of character I want to play, and then I make them up from scratch after that. I'm sure I must be at least somewhat influenced by things, but not on purpose, certainly.

If only you could get his voice in game too :)

Physically, my character started from a base elf mage that I thought already looked cool, but I still wanted to personalize it a bit. After messing with the eyebrows, chin, nose, and cheeks (mainly; everything got at least a little tweakage), I ended up with Aileth. Personality-wise... well, I've been planning bits and pieces of his personality for a while (culminating in my little background thing I wrote for him).

I sadly have characters in mind before I start a game, but then I realize the CC simply doesn't support the kind of look I wanted to go for.

Usually I'll try and recreate it as best I can within the limitations, but *shrugs*.

Other than that I'm just fooling around, and usually my better ones (imo) come about more when I don't care about the outcome as opposed to trying to have the character fit a specific image.

I really couldn't tell you where the inspiration comes from. Ideas just pop into my head. I do need a personality down before I start making them, though.

First character to be a reluctant hero. The sort of character who doesn't look like they are either ready or want to be ready for whatever they have to face. Kind of like Disney's King Arthur cartoon from many a year ago.

I think I am inspired primarily by my own impulses. I don't think about it too much. First off, I will play an attractive female if one is available. Then it's usually chaotic-neutral from there or erotic-good. If stealing is allowed I will do it. If magic is available, I will use it. I would rather sneak and attack from behind than directly confront my opponent. I would rather get in a high place and pepper my adversary with arrows. I seldom use heavy weapons or armor because I would rather carry loot.

And, if I can throw my opponent off a building or "gently push" them off a cliff, I will (I love Assassin's Creed!)

I tend to be congenial in conversation. I will never use the "shut the hell up" option for dialog choice. I prefer the "what the hell is wrong with you?" response rather than the "oh, you poor dear!"

Okay, I gotta take my turn. I actually have direct inspirations for a lot of them.  Some were just created and then developed as a personality from there, and some were already sort of in my head from prior games, but some I can say just what inspired them.

Image IPB

Sharreth was inspired by Deviija's Aeoli.  She had such a pretty bronzed look that I decided I'd try that, and add a bit more dalish wildness, and this is what I got. I still have to develop a personality for her. :wizard:

Image IPB

Casavel was inspired by Purple Lady's amazing looking guys. I really liked that soft, yet hard look they had, and wondered if I could do something like that. I'm not sure if I made it work for him or not. The eyebrows bother me and I might change them.

Image IPB

Celeste was inspired by Golden_Rose's beautifully ethereal characters. I couldn't make her completely soft, I had to add a few flashes of dark and bright... that's just my way! :P

Image IPB

Rivie basically was inspired by the lore of the game itself. The dalish religion and customs and ways just remind me so much of native american traditions... it seemed fitting to make a character that looked at least somewhat native american, and to try to give them that serenity I see in so many pictures and work by native americans.

Image IPB

Rowan is my version of Baldur's Gate's Coran. He's not an elf, and unfortunately I can't capture either the awesome emerald green tattoos or the ****-eating grin, but he is still a spiritual tribute.

Ritha, Alicia and Novaera have been constant characters for me.. well, their basic personality has been. I've always had characters with those characteristics in every game I've played.  All others not mentioned were simply made up in the CC and developed from there. :D

Started from scratch with personality, then looked which origin fitted better with.

Luckily, with the release of the CC I could experiment earlier the look of the character or it'd have taken hours to decide it..!

I take my inspiration from how I envision the character looking based on his history and personality. For example, my current avatar is my human Warrior of noble birth, and I envision him as being intelligent, well-mannered, and clean-cut.

Were I to design a commoner he would probably be a bit rougher around the edges, perhaps with some scars or a tattoo, but that does not make sense for my perception of a nobleman. If I were making a rogue he might appear more suave and charismatic and less stoic, and if it were a mage he might appear wiser.

I usually will base two of my characters on my personality (one good & the other evil). I create two female characters based on my wife (one good & the other evil). And my other characters are based on friends, former lovers & evil acquaintences. Since I know a diverse group of people, I can always find the right personality to fit the race and class that I'm playing.

Yeah, I get that. It's part of why my noble dwarf has no tattoos, and my noble female, Alicia doesn't have them either. My noble male, Rowan, does, but he's always been a rebel. The others have them for various reasons mostly made up because I love the facial tattoos in this game. <3

All of my characters have original names, but they were all inspired by characters from great books, games, and movies.

Pics here... social.bioware.com/23106/albums/12816
1) Enderion De'Veryn - made up the name (French) while creating a character in Diablo 2. He's a little of everything I love about Elves and Rangers that I've read in Forgotten Realms books mostly, with a hint of Drizzt's spirituality.

2) Enterius Dreamwalker - made up the name for my Sorcerer in Dark Age of Camelot. He's wise in magic, lore, and loves to control things to his advantage. Very Neutral. Big fan of Crowd control abilities and Mana Regen/Debuff spells. Mostly inspired by Red Wizards of Thay.

3) Kaizen - I use this name for any type of dual wielding melee character I make, especially if it's an oriental themed game. Mostly inspired by D&D Orient ninjas with a hint of Artemis Entreri and/or Jarlaxle philosophy mixed in.

4) Moira - Evil aligned female caster inspired by Ravenloft setting, with a small dose of the Forgotten Realms Pantheon lore.

I could go on, but I do so hate long posts....

All but one of my characters just come from my imagination and then I try to get my thoughts together for background. the one character that actually has an inspiration is Cassandra and she was inspired by Qara in
NWN2

Image IPB

I am still working on her with help from friends cause I just cant quite get the look I want.

Only my first character, Dalish Elf Rogue, was born from inspiration, referring to Legolas from LoTR. The rest of my characters were out of boredom and my own imagination.

All were by my brain except my warrior male elf who I was thinking of trying to recreate Harlequin from the cover of the Harlequin's Back Shadowrun book... After thought was that I should have made him a mage because that would have made more sense. It's too bad I can't go backwards and edit his class without losing his face.

Let's see if I can briefly tackle these one by one. I'll just focus on their looks for now. If someone's actually interested in their personalities/what influenced them, I'll share that too:

Image IPB
Fasais: The basic idea for him came soon after Bioware released details about the origins earlier this year. I've always liked elves/half-elves, rangers and druids, so a Dalish for my first character was a no-brainer. They also reminded me of Native Americans, which was an additional appeal for me, as I've studied various northeastern and southeastern tribes since I was a kid. Therefore, I wanted my Dalish to look at least somewhat Native American; originally, I planned to model him a bit after Uncas from Last of the Mohicans looks-wise, but was unable to do that in the creator. While I was somewhat sad about this, in the end I'm kind of glad, as I generally prefer to make designs of characters straight from my own imagination, rather than diliberately basing them off of someone.

Image IPB
Legam: His looks were a lot simpler in idea. I wanted someone who looked interesting to me, and also felt a bit like a gentle soul. I think, on some level, he was also subconsciously designed after some traits I find attractive, because he's got three things I generally find in men who are visually attractive to me: dark skin, black/dark brown hair, and facial hair. :P I did not make him with the thought "Hey, let me make a sexy man!" but I guess my fondness for darker colors won out anyway.

Image IPB
Dalag: The portrait's not up to date with how he looks now, but I don't feel like reuploading him. For Dalag, I was simply playing around with the CC and trying to find something that looked like a good noble dwarf to me. Someone who was young, but not too young (that's why his newer version has a smaller beard), yet also looked a bit worn from stress/the burden of responsibility.

Image IPB
Eileia: Again, I was playing around with the CC. Personally, I'm not fond of make-up in general, both in the CC and in real life. Unless they're more naturally colored tones that subtle accentuactes someone's natural looks, they tend not to be my bag. Thus, none of my females have make-up. For Eileia, I tried to make someone with at least a few "plain" aspects - like her thicker eyebrows and tying up her hair. I figure her to be a bit more practical in this area, being an alienage elf and a rogue.

Image IPB
Gwen: Again, no make-up. I decided to go with tattoos for this noble human for two reasons: 1. I had Celtic women in mind when I made her, and the blue tattoos reminded me of blue body painting/tattooing/dyeing some Celts did before battle; 2. It's been said that Ferelden is barely civilized, closed to being a barbaric state. I can see a country that's scarely past barbarism still holding on to tattooing culture for their nobles.

Image IPB
Yenni: Again, I was just playing around with the CC. At first, I was going to focus on giving her heavier/more masculine features, but then I figured that was too "general fantasy dwarf stereotype" and went in a bit of the opposite direction. I made her hair this shade and chose that hairstyle, because out of the choices, to me it looked the dirtiest/scruffy/unkempt/etc, as I imagine a casteless dwarf wouldn't be able/think to worry about their appearance as much as others. She did have a more elaborate tattoo at first, and I liked a lot of the dwarf commoner tattoo designs, but in the end, the basic one seemed to fit her best.

I imagine the personality first, then "look" for that person when I create the appearance. Usually that reminds me of people I know or have met, so that helps.
