I'm sure this has been asked and maybe even answered already in the 500 threads that have sprung up, but ye Gods, I can't check them all. Links to existing discussions or even a Bioware answer are welcome though.
I'm slightly confused by the naming scheme of the Dragon Age games.
Dragon Age: Origins is a name that makes me think of a prequel of sorts. A zero issue rather than a first issue. Moving from Dragon Age: Descriptor to Dragon Age: Number, and the wrong number by my understanding, seems to just break the pattern on the first try. Since nothing is set in stone yet, can we please go back to Dragon Age: Descriptor and put numbering in a sub-title for people coming late to the party?
Dragon Age... Two? Where's One?

It is DA:2 for now. I think there will be something added later.

Yeah, I guess DA2 is just catchier at the moment.

Dragon Age: Origins = Dragon Age 0
Dragon Age: Awakening = Dragon Age (Alpha or first, ergo 1)
Dragon Age 2.

Think of Dragon Age as franchise, and it makes sense that the first one was called origins for two reasons; the first and most important of which being that it's the origins of the franchise, and the second of which being the fact that the origins were the driving inspiration for the game - at least at first.
DA2 is only named so because Dragon Age Adolescence doesn't work very well.

Well, I'm hoping 'DA2' is just a placeholder cause it's a pretty trite title.
And Mordaedil, Awakening is fully titled 'Dragon Age: Origins - Awakening'. As such, the nomenclature indicates properly that Awakening is a smaller part of the bigger Origins concept.
In case I wasn't clear enough in my OP: Origins seems like it sets everything up. It introduces the world far and wide, and its many concepts, the Blight, the Darkspawn, the Grey Wardens of course. And in the way it's set up, Bioware COULD still be pushing DC or new modules for it even as they release other games. If the indications about DA2 are not misleading, it's a much broader game than DA2 will be, and much more customizable.
All of these things suggest to me that it should retain a status outside of any ongoing and numbered games. Or, if all games end up being episodic narrative strewn across the history of the DA world, there's no point in numbering at all.

DA2 is only named so because Dragon Age Adolescence doesn't work very well.
Could call it anything. Dragon Age: A New Hope. Dragon Age: Lady(or Lord)Hawke. Dragon Age: One Flew Over the Gryphon's Roost. Dragon Age: Orlesian Connection...

That's indeed a good question. As some of the basics are changed, it would be better with sub title, like Dragon Age: Hawkehammer. Something like that.
Dragon Age 2 is either a working title or a marketing device to show players that it's not an expansion but a new game, with shinire graphics (for which the usual RPG fan doesn't care), dynamic combat (for which the usual RPG fan hope, that it won't cut the skills, spells and such, and degrade the game to GoW), and a pretty new, voiced character (for which the usual RPG fan is sad as it will cut out some conversation options, otherwise the development and recordings would eat up all the money BioWare owns)!

It should be called Dragon age:rise to power.
But they went with 2 probably to help people better understand.

Deal with it. They named it Dragon Age: Origins because for one, it's the first Dragon Age game. Two, there's different games that have Dragon Age in it, like Dragon Age: Journeys and Dragon Age: Awakening, just putting Dragon Age as the title would possibly made it a bit troublesome to distinguish it from other spin-offs, tentatively, that is. Dragon Age II fits it just fine because Dragon Age "One" was actually multiple titles. The books, spin-offs, DLC and Awakening along with Origins make one start, how's that for your Dragon Age "One"?

It was a joke. Dragon Age: Origins wasn't a prequel because it was a fully contained story.

Wouldn't be suprised if they changed it to Dragon Age 2: Rise to Power somewhere down the line.

I see nothing odd in DA2. The number makes it clear it's another DA game and not an expansion. The first Mass effect game isn't called "Mass effect 1" but simply "Mass effect". But I also think they will add a subtitle along the way making it "Dragon age 2: something". When DA was announced it was just DA and didn't have a subtitle either.

The first installment of a series often goes numberless.
It's also Mass Effect, not Mass Effect 1
Or Neverwinter Nights, not Neverwinter Nights 1
Same goes for other game developers, or movies, or books.
Dragon Age: Origins was the first installment of the Dragon Age series, and will unofficially be known as Dragon Age 1, though officially it will never bear a number.

Thing is, Dragon Age: Origins is not without a descriptor to show its place at the very beginning. It's not just called 'Dragon Age'. With Mass Effect, going from plain ME to ME2 is fine. But the Origins in DA:O suggests A) an intended different way or ordering things above and beyond numbers or
