Hi is this a RPG , where you get to know people and companions around you. You get to choose between dialogue options, develop your character and so on. or is this more of a action/strategy game?
I mean it stretches 10 years and seem to have some empire building functions built into it and we play a character that we dont seem to have so many choices for, more or less like "Witcher".
Dragon Age 2 "One origin - One Race"
Is Dragon Age 2 a RPG?

Yes, it's an RPG. The fact that you can't change race means nothing in the definition of RPG
In Planescape: Torment you can't change race, face or gender and people would whip you if you said it wasn't an RPG

i don't mind building towns/castles, fitting out soldiers, i would even love to design ingame armor and coat of arms for them, but I would hate it if they make it less RPG and more action as they did with ME2

well i'd like some RTS elements. always thought it would be a lil strange that u could end the blight by doing no real tactics with armys.

No. This is the next step towards auto-piloted digtal video-ga..(oh whatever), digtal video experiences.
You'll embark on an epic quest as the peasant hero Hawke to gather an elite army (you'll chose who to recruit first).
You'll slay fearsome level-scaled enemies and collect fascinating talkative and emotionally unstable party members, like pokemons. One will want to romance you.
Your decisions throughout the game will be featured in the closing vignettes when you evetually save the continent and the world.
Have I forgot to mention the digtal (without the i of course) actors who'll make you feel like you're in a movie bro?

No witcher was not an RPG in my book, it had very limited choices for character development in my opinion. Ok disregard Witcher as my example as we obviously dont think alike, otherwise everyone just get stuck by that comment.
I mean a RPG like Baldurs gate, NWN1 and 2 and so on and for that sake as DAO1.

PT is a bit different. It plays in an unique universe, were there are no "normal" races from which you can choose from. There are no elves, dwarfes etc. The NPC-s are demons, zombies, succubus', a flying skull and things like that. Dragon Age is a standard fantasy game (even if it strays away from the Tolkien formula), so it is strange not to be able to play as dwarfes or elves.BlackyBlack wrote...

Witcher is classed as an Action/RPG. RPG's are starting to shift more and more to the action catagory because it makes for cheaper and easier game development.
Think Assasins Creed, God of War, Metal Gear. Great games but not RPG's. This new direction of RPG's is combining elements of both. They are switching from the table top D&D experienece to a more cinematic action movie like experience. Which also allows for more revenue by appealing to a larger audience (lowest common denominator).
It is makes games more multi-platform friendly (ie dumded down for consoles). That and it allows for gimics like voiced scripts, Which nearly always have fewer dialog opitions then witten scripts.
Watch and see I bet DA2 will also end up having fewer party members.

Man-Giraffe-Dog has been spotted! It's all over the news! MGD is the greatest threat to mankind ever and I've come
here to warn you! Here's Proof (person who took the picture was brutally killed 5 seconds after taking it)

Still Super Duper Serial.

In my opinion, this game is a sword and sorcery action adventure.

No it's an interactive movie. Meeting people that you previously met during the events of a timeskip disqualifies it. Hawke might now who they are I don't have a clue who they are. That means I'm not playing Hawke I'm directing Hawke.

Nowadays, any game that has damage numbers floating above character's heads seems to be considered an RPG. I think there should be a newer term for games like DA2. To me, this game does fall under the RPG category, but more specifically it's an Action-RPG that is heavily story-driven. Some people like that, some people don't. I think the people who hate the game simply don't like the story and the over all setting. That's fine - you can't please everyone. I really like DA2, not necessarily for the RPG elements, but mainly for the story - I find it better than TV - lol.

That is like saying "adding sound to film was a gimmick" and perhaps it was - in a way - but it was also a forward step in development of the medium. Not everyone likes progress, but that doesn't make it bad by default.

Bans handed out.
Homophobia is entirely unacceptable on these forums. If you're unable to respond to things in a respectful way, you will not be welcome here anymore.
So in this game marketed towards the "Call of Duty" crowd Bioware thought it was a good idea fill the game with as much homosexuality as possible. Let's not forget the average age of the Call of Duty crowd ranges from 8-15 years old.
Remember, according to JohnEpler, if you dont like this photo you should be banned from the forums.

Feel free to copy/paste this post into any topic you please. Bioware has shown it has no problem with copy/pasting with the release of DA2.

Well my character is only level 8-9, so I've probably only seen 20% of the game, but I would have to say: No, Dragon Age 2 is not an RPG. It is a hack & slash set in a fantasy environment. The choices you make don't really seem to matter (except maybe your companions will get a little happier or a little unhappier, but that doesn't really matter either as long as their response is consistent, since you want your companions to either like you or have a "rivalry" with you).

No, it is not a rpg. Its action/adventure game, and like other games they have rpg elements.
