That's just plain wrong. If you think armour makers throughout history didn't consider the look of the armour they were crafting you need to think again. Check out the armours on
this site for example. Obviously not everyone would be able to afford such extravagant armour but when the storyline makes you the head of the Grey Wardens and a close associate of the king it's rather unlikely you'd be walking around in the same rags you had when you started the adventure.
Not caring about how your character looks doesn't make you cool or true to history. Looks have been important since the dawn of time.
I don't see the problem with wanting better looking gear. The stuff in DA:O was dull, generic and I think there were no more than two or three different looking sets of leather armour in the entire game. That needs to be improved!
