Why stay loyal to ME1 LI?

Liara seemed pretty disinterested in Shepard on Illium. She was too busy with her Shadowbroker hunt to care about him in a relationship sense. Plus, with the Asari way of handling relationships, i dont think she'd really expect you to wait for her.
Ashley/Kaiden were busy with their alliance duties and very pissed about Shehard's Cerberus ties. Maybe they felt betrayed/hurt but since they were not willing to talk about it much, or even consider joining your crew, I think it's pretty safe to say that means you are broken up.
The 2 years of being dead is another reason to think your former relationships are now over. They've already greaved your death and moved on.
Of course, from a players perspective(as opposed to the Character's perspective) , I CAN see why many ME1 lovers wanted to hang on to their old loves. It might have been great if there had been some in game options for Shepard to maintain a long distance relationship with his LI, but that was not done.
Before I played the game, i didnt know how my Shephard would handle this. Would he stay loyal? But, as I played further into the game and saw how disinterested they were in rekindling things, I had no problem letting my Shep move on. It's not like they were married?!
I look forward to seeing what happens in ME3. Maybe I can break up with Tali and get back with Liara?

To speak as the presently in-development Shepard: Because Liara got all...interesting.

Oh, and why did I stay loyal to Liara? Because she's by far my favourite character and I RP my Shepard as being understanding and sympathetic to Liara's plight. However, my Shepard has had a difficult experience with her relationships in the past, and that manifests itself as her being a little unsure, uncomfortable and reserved whilst speaking to Liara on Illium.

I like Liara, even "ME2 Liara", and the new LIs don't appeal to me.

Which is the only way you can roleplay your Shepard and have it still make sense.

Exactly. I incorporated an element of my Shepard's backstory into the reasoning behind her incredibly derpy dialogue with Liara on Illium. Otherwise, Shepard's reluctance to comfort or be intimate with Liara at all makes little to no sense at all.

As for Ash of Kaiden both of them act like complete jerks the one time your briefly meet them. They give you a kiss and then it is all... "Oh hey Commander! You're a traitor and I hate hate hate you!!!"
Anyone else noticed that once Ash died in ME1 that Kaiden's entire personality changed? Like he was possessed by Ash's ghost. I'm not just talking about his actions in ME2. In ME1 he acted like a jerk arguing with Pressly about finding a landing zone for the Mako on Ilos.
You used to be cool Kaiden but you changed man. Ok, you were never cool but at least you weren't a total ****.

Still, people feel differently. Here are the reasons I can see:
(1) For femSheps, the choices in ME2 aren't so convincing.
(2) For maleSheps, there's no Ashley equivalent in ME2 for those who prefer the "straight arrow" type.
(3) Liara got some interesting character development. It came so suddenly that it was experienced as out-of-character by many, but the plain fact is that ME2 Liara is more on Shepard's level than ME1 Liara every was. For some players (like me), this is very appealing.
For myself there's, of course, no one like Miranda for a maleShep, the old LIs all but forgotten since I met her, but two of my three femSheps stayed loyal to their old LIs and hope they'll come together with them again.

Agree! Liara FTW!
What are these 'new LIs' you speak of?

Yeah, there seem to be mixed feelings about her development amongst the fanbase. I like it, actually, and I've stated elsewhere that the ME2 drama has made me love and appreciate Liara's character more.

Simply for the sake of seeing what happens when you stay loyal, I didn't pick up another with her in ME2. (Of course I'll have to complete another ME1 game so I can 'cheat' on the LI in ME2 to see what happens in ME3, perhaps I'll cheat on Liara with Jack.. or Tali...).
My main character in ME2 (who happens not to be the carried over Shep) decided to go with the cheerleader.

I pretty much agree, Graz.
The ME1 romances seem to be in limbo. Ashley and Kaidan make their opinions quite clear and your relationship with Liara isn't even addressed.
If ME3 rolls around and the old LIs act like the relationship wasn't totally in limbo and they didn't totally leave you hanging, and you committed some grievous offense, I will be... miffed.

I can understand that people liked the ME1 characters better... or were just curious to see what happens in ME3.
BUT... how can you stay loyal to a former relationship? There is little reason to think that Liara, Ashley or Kaiden were staying loyal to Shepard, right? I guess a lot of the roll playing stuff can take place in our minds, but from the context presented in the game, it seems like staying "loyal" to the ME1 choices comes off like Shepard is just pining for his past relationship, living in the past. Not like someone who is staying true to a long distance love.
For example: If I am deployed in Afghanistan, then I could stay loyal to my girlfriend back in the USA.
BUT, that is NOT the same as staying loyal to the girl I befriended and briefly dated a couple years ago.

While Ashley and Kaidain both moved on (Why wouldn't they? You were dead). Liara fully knew you were being rebuild and haven't really moved on.

my Shep loved Liara/had a relationship with her...Shep is unconscious (2 years)...Shep wakes up
Why should he/she feel different now?
