Hey guys, although I think that Dragon Age is a great game I prefer Mass Effect but the words "cinematic style" worry me. To mean that means "Like Mass Effect", and the best thing about Dragon Age is that it isn't, it's an epic RPG in the vain of Fallout 3 or Oblivion. I really love the idea of playing a preset character over 10 decades as it sounds like it could have a great story and character development, but if it has the same feel as Mass Effect DA2 would still be great but not a true Dragon Age game in my opinion.

What do you you guys think is meant by "cinematic style"?

More emphasized cut-scenes.

More thought out camera movement during more of the cutscenes, I would imagine. Addtional, dedicated animations that you would only see in that particular scene, instead of adapting a set of preexisting animations to the fit scene.

I think "cinematic style" means they'll incorporate more dynamic camera angles during conversations, but we won't know until they reveal more information about the game.

Super cool camera angles and cutscenes, Like in Leliana's song, they improved the cut-scenes so I suppose they're gonna improve even more nao.

Fantasy: A more flowing style of fantasy storytelling with little real stopping or starting. No real cessation of gameplay for cutscenes.

Nightmare: They're getting ready to announce that Bioware has hired Uwe Boll to head the project. Hawke will be voiced by Keanu Reeves.

One thing I would like is better flow between exploration, conversation, and combat. I am using "conversation" broadly to encompass interactation with both characters and environmental triggers. I think this would be an excellent way to enhance cinematic flow.

To explain, in DA:O a common situation was the following:

1) I know that a conversation will provoke a battle, so I arrange my characters in tactical positions.

2) I trigger the conversation and the game decides to teleport my characters to predetermined positions.

3) I start battle with my characters in completely wrong positions, even though it was reasonable to expect a battle and be prepared (like with the graves in the forest that trigger revenants).

It would certainly be a cinematic improvement to improve the flow of these stages, and allow things to carry over smoothly to create a more seamless impression. That would allow us better, and better tactical options.

But that would be most triumphant!

Didn't they use 'cinematic' when selling ME?

'Cause when I read that I just assumed they meant more MEish cutscenes, sans aliens and such obviously.

I think it's code for "Flows better due to voiced actors and limited descriptions of what will be voiced" as in Mass Effect. Now, that doesn't really bother me. It all depends on execution. I can imagine a way for it to fail and to be a slap in the face of wise forum posters everywhere. And I can imagine a way in which it's cool. Mostly they just need to avoid the limited paragon/renegade nature of Mass Effect and keep a variety of options in conversation given DA's supposed moral grayness. Being able to feel like you're the character as opposed to feeling like you're guiding someone else's creation was an important component to the original Dragon Age.

I think they can have it all. The good of Mass and the good of Dragon Age. But it's too early to know how it will all work out.
