I assume you've seen the DA2 page, but anyway: http://dragonage.bioware.com/da2/

So it would appear that guy's holding a spear/halberd/sharp thing on the end of a stick, or a very absurd sword.
Does that mean we can equip spears and the like in DA2?
Anyone from Bioware willing to yay/nay that? =]

Its a Polearm, very reminiscent to a Nagamaki and Naginata. Some people have suggested Glaive, as well.

It would also be sweet if they included a hatchet, kinda like the dagger version of an axe, for dual wield characters...

Polearms would be a very welcome addition to the game, especially if they're backwards compatible. Upon installing DA2, DA1 should have the new weapons inserted and available as treasure. Hatchets are welcome, too.

If polearms are going to be their own tree and have their own animations, forget about that.

I'd rather they stick to DA2 than worry about backwards compatibility.

Hey, I'll be happy to have them in the series either way. If the option is there to make them backwards compatible without spending more than 2-3% of your labor doing so, I say go for it.

Looks like a Glaive or Fauchard.

Here's hoping the animations do the weapons justice.

Otherwise its a waste. You don't use polearms like other weapons.

That's the reason they gave for not including them in DA1--the motion capture animations were too expensive.   Posted Image

Exactly. These weapons very much work off the bind. They tend to involve deflections, evasions, redirections, leverage, etc. Stuff that plays off of what your opponent is doing and his own attacks.

I'm guessing it will be simplified to acting like a spear does in your typical video games. Stabby stabb. I wouldn't mind at all though, as long as there are other weapons to choose from.

I swear, polearms(if included) better not be treated as simply spears.

There's much you can do with them, with the right tactics.

They'd be over-simplifying polearms if they were treated as nothing more than piercing spears.

I always thought spears, and other spear-esque weapons would make for good weapons in dragon age, they're sort of long ranged like a bow, its fit for melee class people. So I'm hoping for more weapon variety in DA2, not that there wasn't anything wrong with just daggers, swords, bows, and staffs in DAO.

Now that I think about it, they probably would treat polearms as simply spears.

Perhaps for regular attacks and parries, but abilites usually have an unique animation, which could mean they could do some different animations and do polearms more justice.

But that's providing they're actually in the game.

One may always hope that they'll rise to the occasion rather than slouch to the lowest common denominator...  Posted Image

As the metal portion is so long, it's more like a non-curving falx.  The wonders of "artistic prerogative and license", eh?  Posted Image

New animations would enable the inclusion of new weapons, so let's all hope for new animations.

Yes spears would definitely be a great addition

And it's was fairly use by the spartan hoplite by the way ;)

We could think of some interesting finishing moves like throwing the spear into the enemy chest...

a lot of animation ideas could be gathered in movie like 300...

Really throwing weapons integrate into the current combat system better than stringed weapons you dont get that silly "melee archer" skill - as if there's a good way for a bowman to deflect a sword blow.

As an archer myself, I couldn't agree more regarding the archery in combat business. Neither bows nor their strings are meant to take much of a pounding. I'm still hoping that we'll be able to target and engage opponents at longer ranges one of these days.

The frustrating thing is how limited that can be - outside and in some rare interior spaces you get room for ranged combat, the ForgeMasters area for example is where my archers have shone through - but in your standard dungeon the space is just so small missle fire seems very out of place.

It's bladey looking, but I'm guessing it would just function in game as a mage's staff with a sharp curvy bit on top.

There is that other artwork of an ogre-ish thing stabbing the ground with a spear as part of a magic attack. Don't know if that necessarily speaks to spears being available in normal combat, though.

I too love spears/polearms and would love to have them in the game.

It's a dragons tooth pick, Dragons do get bits of adventurer stuck in their teeth from time to time.

As long as any spear/pole arm isn't just classified as a "two handed weapon" and used the same way I'll be ok with it.
