So, against my better judgment, I'm going to ask

If the first Dragon Age was supposed to be an homage to the Baldur's Gate series, is this a continuation of that "spiritual succession," or are we looking at a new console-influenced animal here.  I didn't mind the streamlining of Mass Effect 2, since the RPG elements in the original were slight enough already and the inventory system was the worst thing ever.  That being said, I really bought Dragon Age: Origins because of my love for BG2.  I remember a distant pre-EA time when that game was supposed to be PC Exclusive, and I won't be buying the sequel if the new combat system involves any sort of "dumbing down."

I know, I know.  We don't know anything yet.  I'm just nervous is all.  Thanks.

Mass Effect 1 by BioWare/Microsoft would have been even better than it already is if it were a PC Exclusive.

It wasn't.

Don't expect a straight answer out of Bioware on that, they are in "marketing mode". Wait to play the game yourself to decide, or at least for some non biased third party reviews.

Good question; hopefully Bioware will give a definitive answer.

Here are my thoughts:

1) IIRC, Mass Effect was designed with console in mind, and PC secondary, while Dragon Age was originally aimed at PC development. They were never intended or held out to be similar, so I don't think the direction Bioware takes Mass Effect should impact what we expect from Dragon Age, except with more general things like DLC/distribution.

2) I too was attracted by the "spiritual succession" and I found that DA:O maintained a lot of the spirit of the old games that I enjoyed, and I enjoyed it for that reason. The game proved to be wildly popular, so Bioware probably recieved a lot of good feedback on that decision.

3) The console versions of DA:O were different in interface and style from the PC version in some regards, and that will continue to be true. But when so many people like the PC version, it seems unlikely that they would switch to a "one size fits all" approach centered around the consoles.

I don't know if that is reassuring to you, but I hope it is.

They(BioWare) did also say that there would be 'no question' as to whether the PC would be the lead platform in the future. I hope that applies to Dragon Age 2.

Nice to hear that :)

I'm sure it means that DA2 won't be neglected for PC gamers, though I'm sure they will not abandon the console gamers either :)

I wish that people would stop assuming that console gamers are all impatient teenagers who want games that will play themselves. I own ME1, ME2 and DA all for the 360 and:

  • The dumbing down of ME2 was a big disappointment, basically turned it into a shooter.
  • The removal of origin stories from DA2 is an even bigger disappointment, and if the customisation options     for this Hawke are not of excellent depth and quality, then DA2 will be a massive let-down.

It's hard not to assume when the vast majority of console owners are exactly like what we tend to assume.

You are an outlier. I wish there were more of you. Scratch that, I wish that all of you would just switch to the PC - where you'd be happier anyway ;)

When developers make games, this is who they are aiming them at mostly.

It's not just that console gamers are immature or impatient - it's the fact that consoles lend themselves more easily to a more streamlined style of gameplay. Obviously, nobody wants to hook up a keyboard and mouse to their PS3. That's not why you buy one, and I wouldn't expect you to play BG2 on that type of system. That being said, I played through DA:O because the PC version offered the complexity you can't offer in a console. I have PS3 for Madden and NBA2k. I have a PC for everything else. I hope Bioware is listening.
