The combat system does need tweaks.

Lets face it, pausing every 2 seconds to swallow a health pot isn't good game play. A monkey can do that. It detracts away from actual skill use and tactics.

There is no doubt about it, the combat system needs tweaks and DA2 is changing it.  But you can upgrade a combat system without needing to turn it into a button masher or cover shooter.

BTW I love button mashers like Diablo, just not in this genre

Also the million "what if" commands needs to go as well. This is an area that has no affect on a character other then being a complete dunderhead of non action while getting pulverized by an axe. Bioware needs to make the AI smarter so you don't have to tell it manually that "Hey X character is getting beaten to a pulp, heal him not cast fire shield on him"

It is an RPG! You use your characters skills, not your own! That said, I wholeheartedly agree that swallowing healpotions every two seconds is silly, which is why I play on normal difficulty. But pausing to give orders to your char, so that he/she can use her skills is good RP. If you want to test your OWN skills, go play a shooter.

Yes, it is bad. A really good RPG is always too complicated to appeal to really wide audience.

Look at MW2. If you play shooters a lot you know - this game is crap. But it appeal to any moron out there.

Seconded.

To the second: Agreed. I miss the Half-Life (1) days.

Yes it is bad. Why? Because if I want to play shoot em up games I'll play unreal or quake. If i want RTS I'll play starcraft or warcraft. When I want a good RPG I will play baldurs gate or dragon age. What I don't want is a dumbed down mainstream version of a potentially great game. Let RTS games be RTS, let our RPG's be RPG's. I am all for improving, innovation and I am all for making games better in general. But mainstreaming to please a crowd is stupid beyond anything I have ever heard before.

Now in defense for bioware we don't have enough information to actually judge them. But if they are mainstreaming, I will stop being a bioware fan. Period.

There is a difference in making commands versus making your NPCs not act like a retard.

Perhaps to appeal to a wider audience they should market the games to a wider audience rather than changing soul of the games?

That's the least of DA2's problems.

Yes it is. Deep complex RPG's come out about as often as a blue moon so losing another one is a huge shame.

Just think of it this way, would you want your favourite band to completely change their style of music and only play songs like Justin Bieber so they appeal to a wider audience?

/thread.

I will use ME2 as an example, they dumbed down its a tps, if I wanted a TPS I would play gears.

If everyone goes for shooters then rpg players get left out, not fair.

Its worse becuase this was a sequal, a big " **** you" people played and loved DAO becuase its an rpg, people played ME becuase its a sci fi RPG, if we wanted an action/shooter we would have bought one instead.

it's false advertisement.

it's like me saying I'll sell you a full sirloin, and only giving you some beef ribs.

I dunno about you, but plentiful RPG elements being in an RPG kind of make sense to me.

Yes, it was a bad idea. Want to know how big a mistake it was? This is Amazon's biggest movers and shakers in video games over the past 24 hours. Top 100. Dragon Age 2 isn't even listed. Want to tell me DA:O wasn't either? Bull!

Yes it is a bad idea. As far as appealing to a 'wider' audience goes is actually false. It may appeal more to casuals that didn't like to put time into character builds and strategy. Though it alienates the players that bought and enjoyed the original for those very reasons. We still bought the game on release day because we expected a game that matched origins in quality or exceeded it, not a game that had the elements we loved taken out in order to appease players that are not in to that.

If you look at the change from say Final Fantasy X to Final Fantasy 13, fans were very upset. Yes 13 sold well at the beginning but fans hated it. Did it appeal to a wider (more casual) audience? Yes. Was it good? No!

It is a bad thing yeah. Games should be about variety, something for every type of consumer. It's not as if there isn't a market demand for a good, strategy based RPG. Origins sales figures were pretty healthy after all. I got most of the changes in ME2 and approved of many (not all though) - but Dragon Age was a different type of game and I liked it for that. It catered to my enjoyment of an old school RPG. I'm not resistant to change, but there has to be a limit. Dragon Age 2 for me is too many changes for the worse, and it's not a game I feel I can support with a purchase for that reason. I'd hate to see RPG's go the way of so many other gaming genres.

I consider DAII an RPG because it still maintains the elements I consider necessary to an RPG.

Its always bad if a roleplay game is stripped of roleplay elements... Im just surprised if someone think different... Maybe i suggest those people to play other games... This answer is a calm answer not offence for noone i just tell if you don't like Rpg's why come here to ask change? Its like if i go in a call of duty related forum and ask more dialogues and roleplay elements..

What, exactly, did they drop? I see a sped up version of DAO's combat with better animations. more variety and usefulness in abilities. Removed double dipping with fatigue and reserved. Combat lost rpg elements?

Talking about equiping your companions? its like 3 slots you cant equip, since you can upgrade their armor still, it just doesnt make them look like idiots wearing dunce cap anymore.

What rpg element did they lose? I just cant see it.
