Sorry if this has been discussed already, this forum is a bit wild. :)

I think BioWare are going to shake this up companion wise for this game.  Which may not be a good thing.

On the DA2 homepage the shadows behind and the main character would seem to be to be the companions we'll be getting in the game.  Their outlines are too distinctive to just be generic character.  But by my count there's at least 16 of them.  So if they are the companions BioWare certainly hasn't learned from ME2 when people said there were too many.

Now take into account that the game will span a decade.  I imagine companions will come and go throughout the game and we will rarely have a stable party. We might a a party for one portion of the game, a completely different one for another.

This thought makes me a sad puppy because my favourite things about all BioWare game are the companions and having an adventure, and building friendship with them throughout the game.

Thankfully this is pure speculation on my behalf. :wizard:

Alternatively, the decade time span might allow your relationships with companions to mature over time. Could be cool!

I think having many companions would be tight. Make it so that a certain choice will make a character unavailable. Instead of having a "don't mention templars or no Wynne," a similar "don't mention templars or no Wyne, but get some other guy" would be sick

Now I'm imagining Dragon Age 3 will have 45 characters and require you play through the game at least three times to collect them all. Damn you, Chrono Cross.

i would like to see a real impact like "hi i wont join your group until you get rid of this companion" ... hey sorry i wont join your group coz you didnt do that or that, or coz you are that or that or ... you know ... exclusive companion, decision based companions and most of all NO FORCED companions (ohi ogren, can you please die in deep roads and not join my party?)

Of course you would think that. That's what automatically goes through the heads when the word change pops up....

They don't necessarily all have to be companions. It's perfectly possible that some are NPCs important to the plot but are not a part of the player's party.

Also possible that they are different versions of the same characters from different points in the time line of the game. Or just an instance of pareidolia.

I thought that the outlines must be companions too but we could be way off. I'd like to have a wide range of characters for companions and I think they did a pretty good job on DAO. I'd like to see some different genders, though. Obviously I wouldn't want them to create a character exclusively around gender, but it would be cool to get a male mage or a female warrior. They did that with Awakening, but it was only an expansion.

Couldn't the silhouettes be the bad-guys you may have to fight?

Well, yes, if you're baffled by all this emphasis on change, loved Origins for precisely what it was, and thought it needed no change. Of course it seems unlikely to be a good thing, especially since the changes seem designed to minimize the things that made the game different from other games.

If there is a change in the companion system that allows npcs assert themselves more often as independent of the player character, then I am all for it.

The game does take place over a 10 years. I really don't want a bunch of characters following me around for a decade as my sidekicks.

Mass Effect 2 did a good job of letting Mass Effect 1 companions actually do things with their lives outside of the PC and pursue their own goals which was awesome. It was pretty annoying seeing people complain that the characters didn't wait on hand and foot for a dead Spectre and suddenly drop everything to join him/her again.

Though I can see why people would dislike that. A lot of the companion hate usually happens when react in a way that the PC can't subvert (Morrigan leaving, Alistair wanting Loghain to die, Wynne and the Ashes) or have dislike they have a personality they can't influence ( I can't make Wynne hate the Circle or turn Sten away from the Qun).

I hope we get more than 4 party slots... Anyways, more party members is more bittersweet than anything. We get less in depth characters, but more choices in who we want in our parties.
