How about dialogue options show exactly what you character say? So you're in control.

I'm just assuming that's what we're getting until they tell us otherwise.

As long as we're playing our own character, and the game is a first-person narrative rather than a third-person narrative, this is essential.  If we do get a dialogue system like Mass Effect, then the game will be probably be irreparably broken.

I wouldn't go that far, but yes, I would dislike seeing a Mass Effect dialogue system in place. It worked for ME but isn't exactly what I expect from Dragon Age.

Though I guess all change is scary. Perhaps I'll laugh about this in 7 years, just as I do lagh now when I remember the time when I though NPC full voice acting would ruin the immersion.

I agree, it's a good suggestion. Why can't there be a middle ground?

Because the game is getting made in an 18 month period to please EA.

If they really wanted to rush the game, they wouldn't VA it.

Exactly.

Voice acting limits imagination, I can't create a suave character if there's no suave dialogue.

But how can you create a character that has any lines at all? The writers have already written your dialogue for you! I know how you feel, though. I was sorely disappointed in not being able to create a one-armed transgendered alien lizardman who only spoke in song lyrics in DAO. Talk about limiting my imagination... :P

So we'll be able to pick from the actual lines the player will speak? Or just the overall intention of the character? If you can tell us, that is :P

Humorous implications aside, everyone here is correct, really. On both sides. You gain something and you lose something. It's a style choice. It's made some folks happy because they asked for it a long time ago. It's made other folks unhappy because they never wanted it. Win/lose either way you look at it.

I'm just saying it's a little silly to create the entire game in one's head based on what little information has been released, concentrate on one's pet feature, then say the game's going to be ruined because it's different from the utopian ideal one has built up mentally.

And even if I had information to give you, remember, i'm the mean one. I'd charge you a jillion pies for it. :)

Yet we had a poet tree, who spoked only in song lyrics. Adding insult to an injury.
Seriously though, in DAO you at least can choose the exact phrase.

I think everyone's point here is that commonly the voice actor doesn't project the tone that the player assumes would be involved. That can't really be helped. What I AM interested in seeing is how many options we receive. In fully voiced games, there are typically far fewer dialogue options. If the same number of options were included in DA 2 as in DA:O, many of us will be happy.

Then again, having the game fully voiced leads us to believe a ME style will be implimented, in which we don't see the full dialogue until we chose a shortened option. This completely changes the play style, so I hope if Bioware goes this route, they'll make some changes from the ME conversation wheel.

I'm gonna be laughing when Bioware announce that Patrick Stewart or someone equally as awesome voices Hawke, and most people are like "OMG this is awesome, I liked VA all along, why didn't he voice everyone in DA:O?!", and a small group of people who are still like "VA is still stupid, gay people like VA, Patrick Stewart is stupid anyway".

This is why you bring us console-gamers a bad reputation

Sorry, folks, but if you wish to continue discussing player VO, you can do so in this thread which seems to be trucking along nicely. Thank you.

End of line.
