It'd be interesting to enter a land that's completely anarchist or something to that effect

On that note...anyone else irked that Lothering was just taken over off screen? Srsly...wtf..... you get some lines from npc's that 'oh dear...hear about lothering...yeah...that sucks'
So... I'm going with the premise that the Templars/Chantry know that the place is screwed and order everyone out?
That'd make more sense that ran like a dog with a tail between your legs....
I only noticed Lothering was done for when I saw the map next and it was unclickable and had the skull on it. I literally went "WHAT?!" and then later through dialogue with someone (maybe Bodhan and his rumours) I got the jist of it. But for the longest time I wondered why we weren't allowed to fight that one.
It's more than likely that Hawke was lead out of there along with a bunch of other people, like you said. S/He might even have stayed to fight (assuming there was any organized resistance at any point) and then once they realized there was no way they'd get out of there victorious, they left. Who knows?

Loghain pulled the towns troops. The templars themselves say the town is doomed and that they are making final preparations for evacuation.
Lothering was abandoned, and the few hold-outs were ignominiously overwhelmed, massacred and eaten by darkspawn most likely. The village was completely defenseless and was destroyed easily.
For some people to suggest that Hawke is somehow a coward is to suggest that Hawke must be so powerful and awesomely amazing that he can singlehandedly defeat a darkspawn horde and slay an archdemon without any kind of support whatsoever.
If he tried to join the military, he would have just been sent against other people in the civil war rather than fighting darkspawn.

Ruin our fantasy Bioware.
Im not buying this. I expected so much from Dragon age 2 and for it all to be took away. Jerks
Heh ! You'll end up buying it anyway. Seriously, we know nothing of this game yet. The key feature of DAO was the origins story. DA2 will have something else. I can't believe how quickly idiots pass judgement about something they haven't even seen yet.

So why don't they portray Hawke as a refugee then? Evacuating a town that you know is doomed sounds better than saying you just hit the road w/o even trying to fight...

I feel as if the unification of the Free Marches will become part of the story. It seems that every nation in Thedas has some sort of political instability, which is awesome.
I was thinking a similar thing, surprisingly.
I started wondering that maybe, just maybe, we might be looking at the rise of a new Silver Knight within the Free Marches. The whole individual city states thing certainly provides a good possibility for such a tale.

so dwarves and elves can't be champions in the free marches? i recall things working differently in redcliffe. and is the concept art for hawke really appropriate? he sounds like a coward and a deserter to me, not a duncan-on-steroids badass.
Hawke is but a simple man with a family in Lothering the blight a problem that only came to mind when the darkspawn swarmed over them like a plague of locusts. The attack being lightning quick Hawke will make split second decisions during the attack that will turn into regret over the years. Probably losing his family and lothering wiped off the map Hawke probably thought Ferelden would fall and moved to the free marches where he would grudgingly become the champion braving dangers both physical and mental.
Thats my quick sum of the story...

I absolutely love the idea of a 10 year story arc. It tends to jive more with my sense of story. I once played a generational campaign where each chapter in the story started with the next generation. Advancing time can be a very good thing.
I understand that limiting us to humans may be off-putting to some, but I trust that BioWare has reasons, even if it's only to allow them to give the character a voice. Silent characters are actually preferred for an old school player like me but I realise that there is a large audience that felt this feature was a negative point for Dragon Age. My biggest hope would be that there is more than one voice to choose from for replayability but I understand that this isn't always financially feasible.
I'm also looking forward to see what David and his excellent writing team will do with a mostly defined protagonist.
The most important things for me is a good story, fun characters to interact with, and the ability to play a mage with no alignment slider. (I can't tell you how much I enjoyed the game not judging me or changing my appearance when I did things that I felt served the greater good )
The five facts have me intrigued, and I will be looking forward to yet another finely crafted BioWare adventure.

Some might say that Mass Effect got the best of this franchise. But I say that the way it looks and feels, Dragon Age is about to take over and ME says goodbye.
And that's not a bad thing, this is an major improvement and not a step backwards.
You have my aproval Bioware.

IMO - the character's flight from Lothering could be due to the fact that he's a teenage level 1 nobody when the Darkspawn arrive. It's not like they will start him at level 20, so what exactly could a level 1 with 2 talent points do against dozens of darkspawn, ogres, and blight wolves?
I'm imagining a Fable type of opening, where we have a young and inexperienced Hawke in Lothering who essentially sets the stage for his character based on decisions he makes while fleeing - fast forward 3-4 years, now he's in the Marches with a chip on his shoulder. My guess is Lothering will be our "Origin" story, and possibly will even be different for different classes, to give a sense of multiple starting points that the first game had.

but seriously, yes i have been disappointed by some of the news (i loved my dalish elf) but i got over it when i realised i shouldn't be angry at the loss of what was in origins, but excited for what will come in DA2. obviously there will most likely be things in the game I'm not fond of but not everyone can be satisfied and i have never played a bioware game that included anything to ruin the game for me and i doubt bioware will start now.
my plan is to simply take in all the information i can about the game and eventually i will decide whether it is a success or fail, anyone seriously making up there minds now is an imbecile and a fool.

Your sort of right.
I believe it can be done more "civilized", for both sides.

This is a bit trivial, I know. But, I hope in the character creator they let us have sliders so we can control the height and width of characters. Since, it is human only, I hope Hawkes at least can have customizable body type.

Though I will miss being elvish, it isn't a deal breaker that I can't be. I'm also really glad that Hawke is being voiced. That was one of my main gripes with DA: O. The Warden just stood there like a statue.
I am, however, a little disappointed that this game is occurring in the Free Marches. I was really hoping to see the after-effects of putting Alistair on the throne.
I'm probably in the minority here, but I hope "new cinematic experience" means we get some cutscenes.
