I was just thinking the same thing,it seems likely Hawke was a orphan from Lothering maybe even that kid who couldn't find his mom,in a way Hawke would have a link to your Gray Warden seeing that he met you when he was a child and likely because of that experience I'm guessing Hawke has a lot of respect for the Gray Wardens and likely ended up idolizing them, that might be the inspiration for the Hawke becoming a hero.

As I keep trying to point out, Hawke can be male OR female (yes, really!), so there's no way he could be any character with a set gender that you've met before.

The complaints seem to be coming from the people who want to only play male, tough guy characters, who never, ever waver in the face of danger. Personally, I thought it was all about choice. :D

Or worse--they simply cannot imagine the idea of a woman as the heroic protagonist in a story.

Im sure you will be able to pick the sex of your character, and change looks etc. I think this will work fine.

I think it's funny that some people who don't like a couple of changes (fully voiced characters, have to be human) act like people are stupid if they prefer these kinds of "dumbed-down" options to the ones available in DA:O.

It doesn't take some amazing depth of thinking to pretend you're a dwarf or an elf. I mean, really?

It's the perception given from the art. We've only seen a big, bearded Hawke insofar. And frankly, I think I prefer a male Hawke already, unless they give me the option of adding a beard to a LadyHawke, then I might consider playing through the game that way.

Has anyone noticed Hawk's right arm/hand, it seems to resemble a dragon like claw, similar to the concept art of the woman with white hair, a female Hawk perhap?

You CAN pick the sex of your character.  That's been explicitly stated.  I'm just tired of people talking about Hawke as if the character is very definitely male (ie: a male character you met in the first game).

I also remember when people said DA:O would be horrible because you only got to pick between a rogue, warrior, and a mage, and they wanted to re-create their rogue/sorcerer/shadowdancer they made in NWN or something.

I'm in favor of fewer options that are more significant. So rather than having 46 character classes that are mostly similar except for their descriptions and a superfluous skill here and there, give me fewer, more concise classes that work differently, and I'll be happy.

Similarly, if they don't let you make a dwarf or an elf generic PC but are able to give you more depth of choice by restricting you to being human and being able to focus on one "origin," I'm all for it. I'm willing to bet that the "impact you have on the world" in DA2 will feature more significant choices than whose side you pick at the end of each major mission or who you decide to sleep with in camp. Those were great when DA:O came out, but I think it's time to go deeper. :)

No, I think if there were no art, the same thing would happen.  People are assumed to be male by default.   I use a female avatar, but just yesterday someone addressed me as "sir."  I am not male.

The game should give us at least two solid playthroughs; I'll be playing one as a good-guy male warrior and one as gritty female rogue, at least.

I can't wait for it to come out!

And even with six origins, people still weren't satisfied.  Remember people complaining about how they couldn't be a human commoner or a Dalish mage (or any mage not trained in the circle)?

Not complaining, but all of those would have been awesome options!

Absolutely.  And I don't even disagree with people wanting something different.  My first choice in DA:O would have admittedly been something like a male human barbarian warrior, for example.  But by limiting the width of options, they are able to give us more depth in the options we do have, in my opinion, and that's almost always a good thing.

Also, elves and dwarves strike me as being inherently restrictive because of their stereotypes. We might get a huge amount of "depth of choice" simply because BioWare can concentrate on an evolving human story variant. Or something.

QFT! ME was an interactive movie. Dragon Age was an player driven experience and I want more of it. Not Dragon Effect.

I don't know, I think we should give it a chance :) The problem I have with mass effect's voiced dialogue is that it makes you choose between three choices, but what if Dragon Age II keeps all of the dialogue choices, but has them all voiced? Sign me up! That would be exactly one of the things I was missing from the first game.

First impression, Bioware screwd up! Didn't like hearing a 'set' character, sounded like I'd be playing some random game where its the same all the time bar some choices; a crapper DA:O where I have to play some bearded ****.

I do however approve after looking at it further. If they really can pull off a Mass Effect / Dragon Age amalgamation, like it sounds to be shaping up to be, I might have to call Bioware's new offspring my new messiah of games. If it fails, yet another game I'd be forced to complete because my summer holidays really haven't got much else going on. Lets hope...

Well, according to some of Dave Gaider's recent posts, they are trying to offer exactly that--voiced dialogue, but more than just good, neutral, and evil choices.

You know I was only speculating Hawke could be any kid of any gender and of any race no need to call me out on that, sorry I wasn't a little more PC about it mom, there were likely several children from Lothering that lost their parents to the Darksawn and might of just seen you fighting them and was inspired by that, they might not of directly met you but just witness you in combat fighting some of the Darkspawn just outside of town, maybe that even gave Hawke the time he or she need to escape.

No, you specifically mentioned the boy orphan and only used the word "he."  And I'm always happy to call people out on their casual sexism (and your attitude--"How DARE you dislike it how everyone is male by default!"--indicates exactly that, btw).

Five Facts About Hawke:

1. He has divided by 0.
2. He won a game of Connect Four in 1 move.
3. He doesn't sleep. He waits.
4. Chuck Norris, Brett Favre, and Barack Obama check the closets and under the bed for any signs of Hawke before going to bed.
5. When Hawke does push-ups, he doesn't push himself up, he pushes the world down.
