DAO is not perfect, of course.  Lel's song is run on the DAO engine, so whatever problems DAO still has, this DLC has. (bugs, graphics, framerate etc... nothing world breaking)

That aside, this is one of the finest DLC's ever put out IMO.

1. Full voices, tight story, sharp character development.  Everything the DAO "story matters most" fans wanted, is here, and it's nicely done

2. Combat BALANCE!  A nice challenge right off the bat, and a good mix of easy battles and a couple of tough ones.  I haven't died this much since my first time in DAO at levels 1-5.  I find myself being forced to use Cone of Cold, and War Hounds are giving me trouble.  I actually need to think about should I go melee or range

3. Pacing is great, I had to force myself to stop playing even tho I was at a RED name boss battle I had just barely lost.  Girlfriend was already in bed for 1 hour, I had stayed up late enough.

In the age of $15 MP map packs and $5 SKINs

Thank you Bioware for giving us Single Player, high quality DLC!

I find this DLC replayable as well as I could try assassin/bard next time instead of the uber ranger/bard

How long would you say it took you to complete?

IDK, I think I'm at the final boss battle but I can't quite tell, it's short...4 hours or less? but for what, $6?
Same as the Darkspawn DLC?  I pause a lot and do other stuff like eat dinner, talk to my girlfriend etc.. ;)

The cool thing is unlike the Darkspawn this one has a lot of story, cutscenes, and "character intro wipe screens" a lot like Red Dead Redemption

I'd agree, were it not for the fact that it takes an event Leliana told the PC about once she had finally come to trust him/her and then changes it completely.   I mean, seriously, I totally understand that it's easier for BioWare to reuse area environments from the main game. I totally understand the need/desire to set the game in Ferelden. That's not a problem. What I don't undestand is why the DLC needed to document that particular event in Leliana's life, and thus utterly rewrite it. Why couldn't it have documented on of Leliana's other adventures? One that she hadn't discussed with the PC at length in the main game, huh?

As someone who definitely is a "story first" gamer when it comes to BioWare's titles, I can't care about characters if I know the details of their backstory can and will change on a whim. And, sadly, it's become clear that they're not as concerned with maintaining a tight continuity as I'd like them to be.

So, while taking the DLC standalone I thought it did everything right -- it was fun, well written, and well balanced -- as something that expanded on the story main game and the characters of the main game, it was a disappointment.

You forgot cut-scenes, the cinematics improved a lot. They were better than in Origins.

I'm not hardcore on the DA canon, changing the stories a bit doesn't bother me, but I understand it's a sore spot for many others

I was worried with the Guy Ritchie style character-intro wipes - I was waiting to see Brick Top show up.

That aside it was well done, voiced, fit it with the universe (albeit with some retrofitting) and the combat challenge level was good. IMHO, the mages in this DLC actually fought better than the mages in DAO.

Kempa did way a better job voiceing Leliana than in Origins, but they really messed up the story. I also didn't like the way the dialogue was handled. I think they should've tightened what the options were. The whole time I felt like she was saying something totally different from what I chose...

Guy didn't invent that style, he borrowed it from the 1970s or even earlier :)

Fair enough, though it was more than "a bit", and contradicts more than one conversation/scene with Leliana.  I mean, sure, we can just handwave it as her lying through her teeth all the way through DA:O -- and if Bioware actually did something with that, I'd be interested --- but it's still a disappointment, y'know?

And, I have to wonder: why do a prequel at all if you're not gonna to stick with what we know about the character you're expanding on? Seems pointless, to me.

Still, as I said, taken purely on its own merits, I thought it was well written, well directed and a lot of fun: and very challenging on nightmare, I have to say. :pinched:

So basically this DLC makes Leliana into a pathological liar?

Well, assuming it didn't also alter her dialogue in the main game (and if it did, all is forgiven) then yes. :P

The MAIN detail remains the same. The how, the why, the where and the when, however, are all changed.

It's not so bad, though, if one simply considers Leliana to be schizophrenic - one part a devout follower of the Chantry, one part a ruthless assassin & manipulator and one part girly teenager.

It's just not clear which of her personalities is the dominant one - it even seems to be up to the player.

Oh, one thing I really liked on the other hand, was how it was framed as Leliana telling a story. That was cool, and made sense of some of the more "WAIT HOLY CRAP" moments when it came to the sort of foes she and her friends were facing down. She's obviously embellishing. XD

As I have understood it, is that what she tells in the camp is the truth. This is both, in a description of the DLC and at the end of the DLC confirmed.

I hope not! I wish they released DLC that would help us get ready for Dragon Age: 2. Thus far, we are only getting irrelevant pieces of crap that will not finish our story/transition us to Dragon Age: 2; although, I am looking forward to what will be cooked up on February 2011 since DA: 2 will come out in March. I hope that date wasn't supposed to be Dragon Age: 2--that was delayed until March Posted Image.

This is by far the greatest DLC in Bioware history, having played plenty of ME/ME2 DLC as well as DA DLC, this is just amazingly awesome stuff. Leliana as the protagonist was perfect, her voicing was phenominal, the story was incredible, I've played DA for a long time now and while I can't disagree with someone who says this story contradicts what Leliana said at some point in the game, I can say that I don't remember whatever it was she said that was contradicted by this awesome story, so I'd say just put it out of your mind like I did (unintentionally on my part, haha) and you'll totally enjoy this story, it's really just far and away the best DLC they've ever done.

Certainly at a basic level its consistent with the DA story, the basic idea that Leliana worked for, and was in love with, the beautiful and powerful Marjolaine, and was betrayed by her, resulting in her staying in a chantry in Ferelden until she meets the PC. That is what plays out over the course of this DLC, and it is pretty long. I don't know how long it took me, but it definitely seemed like the longest Bioware DLC ever.

I second the praise of the difficult combat as well, it was frustrating at times but that's certainly much better than it being too easy. It was very satisfying at the end to defeat the powerful and evil man that Marjolaine betrayed Leliana with, and then the ending Marjolaine and Leliana was open ended, you can imagine whatever you like. Did Leliana put a knife into her like she did to Leliana before? Perhaps they made love one last time, and 'then' she returned the favor with the blade? Or did she simply walk away without doing anything, and without saying another word? It's really well done how so many different endings are possible. I could go on and on about how awesome this DLC was, but the bottom line is that for anybody who hasn't played it yet, this is definitely the one Bioware DLC that you 'must' play, it's head and shoulders above the rest!

It was very well produced and a solid piece of work. However it did have a couple of problems. Too much reliance on cutscenes, and too little interaction with companions and NPCs. Instead of feeling like I was in the book, I felt like I was watching a movie. I like cutscenes, but they should be extras, used for emotional effect, not as a means of moving the story forward. I want to roleplay more of that, not have it handed to me on a platter.

That being said, it moved in the right direction--more story, more emotional impact. In DLC not about companions, I don't want it to be voiced, though. And it still downplayed interactive conversation.

What she says in DAO is totally different than what happens in the DLC. It's almost like the screw up George Lucas did in his prequel crap.

It didn't take me long to finish this DLC. While I did like the story that was told I was able to finish it too easily. Maybe that's just me thought :(

I thoroughly enjoyed Act 1 in the Denerim Market - I thought it captured some of the darkly humorous mischief that something called "the game" should have, as well as its bloodier reality. And for whatever reason, and even though it was just a very short combat, I enjoyed the crossbowmen in the rain. Yes! Visibility issues! Very atmospheric.

I still haven't bought DSC and doubt that I will, but I thought this was worth the money.

Thank the Maker, you too? I thought I just sucked and had lost my touch. While I only outright died once while playing, I had so many close calls where one character (usually Leliana) was down to a few points of health and barely managed to eek out a victory.

Also, I just want to say that I absolutely adore the music in the DLC. It had a very...Renaissance-like feel to it and a feeling of freedom and adventure that perfectly fits with Leliana back then.

Ya it's certainly harder than the actual game. Right now I find myself getting eaten alive repeatedly by 4 mabari and a weapons master in an arl's estate.
