WHY does Hawke want to be Champion of Kirkwall? Does s/he have to lead the people of Kirkwall against some enemy? Does s/he want the fame? The glory? The money?

I don't know. Dragon Age 2 sounds less interesting if it's basically just about some dude or chick who wants to be top gun for the hell of it.

Why do YOU want Hawke to be the Champion of Kirkwall? I suspect that'll be your answer. It's an RPG, after all. Are you really gonna complain if your character's motivation isn't dictated to you?

Once they reveal parts of the backstory and plot I guess we will find out.

Hawke wants to become champion of Kirkwall, this way all the little children will think he's cool and their parents will go to gamestop and buy Dragon Age 2 for them.

The fact that the place is even called Kirkwall is potentially game breaking to me. How am I supposed to have suspension of disbelief when there's a city called Kirkwall about 100 - 200 miles from me?

Heh. I'm not complaining here. I'm just curious as to what people think will be Hawke's motivation. And perhaps what their Hawke's motivation will be, if we are given a say in it.

Let's call Bioware and demand they rename it to Wallkirk then.

@DrunkDeadman Think about it though. Imagine you live in Nashville and they call the place in a fantasy game Memphis.

According to the "Five Facts About Hawke" article over at GameInformer:

4. Hawke is the Champion of Kirkwall.
Kirkwall is a major population center in the Free Marches, a collection of city-states north of Ferelden. This means that at least some of the action in Dragon Age II will be set in Kirkwall itself, though Hawke will also spend time in other areas of the Free Marches. What exactly Hawke does to earn the honorary title of Champion, however, is up to you.

The way that is worded says to me that we will be playing out the events that will lead to Hawke becoming the Champion of Kirkwall.  So hopefully we can roleplay our own character's motivations, whether they are selfish or altruistic.  Personally, I've had enough of morally grey.  I want to be the knight in shining armor this time.

I know what you mean. Seen similar stuff.

Thank you for that, TeenZombie. Hopefully we will be able to choose our motivations.

I doubt it's a matter of wanting to become Champion of Kirkwall, per se. I mean, I don't think that will be your character's driving motivation.

Rather, I'm guessing that after fleeing the Blight, he'll be caught up in something in Kirkwall, and in the process of dealing with it, will be given the title. All the title means is that something big is going to happen there. I don't think this'll be the end-game thing either. The way they word it, it's almost as though it's already in the past. So if it DOES happen while we play, I'm sure it'll be relatively early on.

What if it was a fantasy Kingdom based on ancient Egypt?  Pretty sure I could get passed it.

@Valmy On the one hand I could argue about that being ancient egypt means its fair game. Ancient, not a real life thing TODAY. I'll admit to being a little bit selfish in thinking its a horrible name for a fantasy setting given that I live close to a place called Kirkwall. And don't get me wrong, I'm sure it will be as awesome a game as any other Bioware have graced us with. But just not sure I won't be able to supress a groan of "did not do the research" everytime I hear the name. Maybe if the real Kirkwall was an interesting place I'd get past it...but man, that place blows.

Ah, I see. Interesting perspective. Seems correct as well.
