To the people who complain about losing choice

If I want to play a mage I can't choose to be Tranquil... maybe my character doesn't WANT to go through the Harrowing, but I have to. (kinda funny given that the main character never emotes really). Also I have no choice but to help my friends break into the vault, even if I report them I am told to help them.
If I play a Human I ALWAYS play a noble, there is no commoner, there is no storyline other than noble, and we will always be attacked in the middle of the night by Howe.
Also being M/F doesn't change anything other than a couple dialog lines (only thing it does change is romance options pretty much)
Initially when I heard the news that I wouldn't be able to play as another race I was annoyed and let down. Now that I've been thinking it over I realize I am not losing much. I was never playing my characters Origin, I was playing the Origins BW had decided that character could be based on race and social status. My player character couldn't even emote much if at all, and felt more like a vehicle I just drove around to encounters than Shepard in Mass Effect does.
Now, am I concerned that I won't be able to do tactical battles like DAO? Yes, I want to be able to pause and scan over the battle and plot my next move, I hope that stays in. Am I concerned that Bioware might remove same-sex relationships? A little, I have many friends who are LGBT and they love having options that cater to their lifestyle. Am I concerned that the game will have shallower character interactions? Kinda, ME2 dropped A LOT of interactions between your party members in favor of more interaction with the player character. Still not sure about how I feel about that one honestly.
In the end it's not my universe, it's theirs, I am simply purchasing the right to play in it. If you find that the news about DA2 is getting you down the DAO PC mod community is expansive with characters, campaigns, and quests for all tastes being made and could last a long time. If you however give Bioware a chance at least until trailers and more information come out you may find your crisis of faith will be over.

You have no idea what you talk about, and there was a human commoner origin planned but it got cut and that is also sad.
He has a point though, and the lack of human commoner origin wasn't sad. It was a god-send.

Bhelen or Harrowmont?
Alistair or Loghain?
Elves or Werewolves?
Mages or Templars?
Be mean to NPC or be nice to NPC?
Defile the Urn or take the ashes?
You never actually had "Z0MG HUGE MORAL DELIMAZ AND STUFF"
You had 2-3 minor options that didn't really change anything.

Um you had choices. Now we have one less choice than before. Pity that.
We have no origins, including choices of actions in them which may affect the future (like dwarwen noble choices)
We have no choice in race (and this is a HUGE goddamn major disappointment in a fantasy game, especially in a sequel of a game that allowed it)
We have no choice in voice of our character (aslong the voice actor is good I don't mind that much)
Dragon Age was good not because its copy-convert-pasted LOTR story with orcs...erm I mean darkspawn, but because the origins and races affecting the whole game as they did was something unique and outstanding (despite the fact it could have been even better in that)
now they essentially tear out the heart of what Dragon Age was

And all of those types of choices are still possible in this new game. Everything else was what DnD players call flavor text. It was there for atmosphere and had no real bearing on the plot or world.

picking a race and background is not "favor text", this I can say without doubts as a longterm pnp player

My point was, that people are complaining over a lack of "choices", when in reality the choices you made while playing Origins didn't really matter anyway. The game was still the same no matter who you sided with,

Except those already played out with the Warden from the first game and the completion of that storyline.

I would agree if race meant something other than an hour and a half of game time at the beginning and like 2-3 dialog lines being different.

Origins and races affected very few things. Being a mage influenced nothing (oh, except you yourself could go into the fade in Redcliff), and one choice at the end that could make mages autonomous.
Being a human changed dialog with Howe, and allowed you to become king/queen, big choices, but in the end amounted to very little as soon as Awakening came about.
Dwarves/Elves I never played through so I don't have any real idea how those played out but I suspect they aren't that different. Especially the Elven origins which were short at best.

Wow... Name 1 game that gave you the variety of choices in storytelling that Dragon Age Origins does?
Choices that actually ment something? Or the style of choices that DA:O has?

Not if you were a mage. Seriously I intended to play a Human Warrior and the fact that I had to be a noble cheesed me off to no end, seriously it was lucky the mages could spec as an arcane warrior otherwise I would have had to roll elf to keep within the type of character I wanted to play. Sure the Origin stories force you into a role and backstory but as long as you can adjust your character to fit the mold and still make it feel like your character things werent so bad (well I did have to use a few mods as well but still you get what I am saying).
This is what I hated about Mass Effect, sure it had customization but with the tools I was given I could never make the character feel like mine, no matter how hard I tried I couldnt get my character to fit the mold and I had to play someone elses, I was always Commander Shepard not a character of my choosing. This is what I am afraid will happen and so far looks like what will happen in Dragon Age 2.

But you have MORE choice than you will have in DA2. They should be adding more choices in DA2, not taking them away!

You have no idea how many choices there will be in DA2 yet because we know so little about the game. Just give it time, let details trickle in, before you call ruined forever. I for one am interested in how this will play out. Maybe focusing on one character and one background will mean BioWare is crafting more meaningful end and mid-game decisions.
Look at Alpha Protocol. The game was buggy as anything and had exactly one main character. No choice even for a different gender. But as flawed as the gameplay was, the one thing you have to respect are the sheer number of meaningful choices you had to make. I played the game through first and then talked with a friend who completed it later. We both met characters the other had never even heard of, mostly because of the consequences of our actions. That was really cool, because it made the world seem bigger and more realistic. BioWare is a little more accomplished at mechanics than Obsidian, so I think they could take a similar concept and release it to the world with fewer issues.
In short, give it time. No origins and no race selections does not equal no choices.

Well I guess I disagree I thought there was alot more good in Dragon Age than just the fact I had origins and races.

This.
But if you have fewer choices at least make them be more meaningful and spend more time on them. That is primarily what I am asking of Bioware in exchange for taking the race choice away.

All of that being said, the story in DA might trump the desire to veer away from the choices I have. I'm not role playing *my* character, but as the OP explains, I'm role playing *their* character... which can be just as fun.

Plaescape:Torment
The RPG where your name, race, and APPEARANCE were all present
As long as there is a good story and meainingful PLOT choices, your background matters little. Even in DA:O the almost every character had 80% the same experience after the Origin story with a few lines of text swaped depending on race or gender

I think the choices is what set it apart from other linear games... but I want more. When will we see a game where we can even go as far as side with the bad guys? If I'm being evil, I don't necessarily want to save the world which the main quest might be forcing me to do. If I'm role playing my character, it's important that there's a choice option that's in line with how I'm playing the character, else the "RP" effect is lost. However, more choice in a game makes it an exponentially bigger game for the developers to make. When the story takes me to a fork in the road, I want more than just two choices in my RPGs.

Someday I hope we can get to that point of storytelling in the industry, where you can choose to turn evil and have the storyline change to compensate. Of course the graphics and voice acting would take a hit, but i think it's a worthy trade off. It would have to come from an indie studio, no huge publisher would put money behind such a radical departure from the norm.
