This isn't a rant post like the bagillions of other ones, I just want an honest answer for why we won't be able to choose our race like we could in Origins.  It seems to me that decision ostracizes a lot of fantasy-lovers who loved playing an non-human in the first game.

Aren't sequels suppose to expand on the original?  I understand removing features that may be pointless or caused problems from the original, but playing a non-human character seems like a pretty pertinent feature given the setting of the game world.

Because they'd have to hire different voice actors for each race.

Humans have British accents.

Elves and Dwarves have American accents.

reply:

because they want to have a voiceover even if they have to stand on their hands to get it

because at the same time they are lazy/want to spare cash for various races voiceovers they cut all other races

and I bet there won't even be multiple choices for human voices

now
this is an even stupider cause

Easier to voice, and fewer dialogue options.

No need to voice any of the unique responses based on your origin, nor is there any racism/rascist comments/whatever your character responds to those comments

Of course there won't. CAn you imagine the expense that would be? ALmost the entirety of the game's budget would be gone on VA for the main character. Not to mention the space it would take on disk.

I'm guessing in game it will have something to do with hawkes importance.

Real world all those voice actors and maybe Bioware really planed the story this way.

Why can't an elf or dwarf have the same accent as humans if they are raised in a human-village like Lothering?

As said above, it seems to be because of the voiceover. They may have come up with story reasons for it, but seeing as we know that both elves and dwarves were present in Lothering there seems to be little other reason for it (as of now) than the prohibitive cost of trying to make different voices for different races.

I guess it's a story reason. Hawke is meant to be(come) famous and powerful. Personally, I can't even think of any noteable Dwarf or Elf in Thedas (aside from our Origins Warden, of course). As of now, all REALLY important figures in the franchise are human. Kinda makes sense, seeing how Elves and Dwarves both are just a shadow of their former glory and keep (or are kept) more or less to themself.

It might be possible to make do with a non-human hero, but as far as the franchise goes, I think a human hero makes most sense if the hero should become powerful (as in having influence on the world, not combat prowess).

Cause they had to cut cost...and having voice acting is more important than game content.

I think this is seriously the reason.

It is a casualty of going full VO.  I only hope they provide human centric options and quests and so forth to make up for it.

I'm at your side, I just love to troll around with BioWare PR phrases.

If you've played mass effect you'll know that there are hundreds of differnt lines of dialouge. It takes a long time for them to do all those lines for the male and female characters now imagine how long it would take to do a male and female voice for each race.
that being said i want to be a scottish dwarf god dammit!

Well yah, who doesn't want to make love to pointy earred women, and shoot lighting from their hands? Only narrow-minded idiots without imaginations, wouldn't enjoy that.

Because, dwarves are essentially moles with beards. And only come out of their caves, if they're exiled or something.

I don't think Bioware would sacrifice a popular game mechanic just to save money on another voice actor. There are many ways you could fit in story-wise why an elf or dwarf had a human accent.

I just don't get why they would take out a feature that seems so critical to the franchise, the ability to play as other races in a world full of non-humans.

I'm a bit sad about it. But hopefully this means a better story, as Dragon Age lacked in that area due to the multiple origins.

Well I guess I disagree with you there.  I would rather they leave out an option entirely than do it half-*ssed or poorly.

^^^This.

DAO had a very generic and cliche story.

brb, gotta help the elves, humans and dorfs to overthrow an evil entity...

This has been done 100 times over.

The only difference that the race made was the first 2 hours of the game and a couple dialogue responses here and there.

Well, the story is about someone get to power, maybe building an empire.
In this settings it is a little strange that an Elf or a surface Dwarf does that.
In Origins, you can hide you race behind the big shield of Gray Warden, but in DA2, I don't think you can.

I would insert "..is seen as more important."

I like to play as non-humans as often as possible, personally. I'm a human, and humans ****** me off. We're the biggest jerks in the room in games, and I play games to escape reality a bit, not to play myself in the Sims.
