I would go as far as to say, the Grey Wardens are like the Jedi, for this time.
Having Hawke not be a Grey Warden would almost kill the game for me, as small of a thing as it sounds.

Just think, if you never gave any game a chance that didn't let you play as Jedi you wouldn't have discovered the Grey Wardens. So if you don't move on from Grey Wardens, you won't discover the next cool thing.

Nope, and I'm glad. It makes our Warden more special if Hawke goes his own path. Plus, Hawke is from Ferelden, if he became a Warden don't you think he'd want to go and help slay the Archdemon? Then there is the fact that Grey Warden's have short lifespans, this gives Hawke the chance to impact on Thedas for a lot longer.

The Grey Warden's are confirmed to be in the game though, read it in either a dev comment or the Q+A with Mike and Fernando.

In regards to the GW lifespan, I would still like to see one last piece of DLC set in the future which focuses on our Warden going into the Deep Roads when he or she feels the call though. That would be the perfect 'final dlc' for Origins for me, even more so if they fit Morrigan in there somewhere too. :P

The game would be remarkably dull if they decided, "Hey, you know that blight thing in the first game, and how we made the player a gray warden?" "Yeah what of it?" "Lets do it AGAIN!!!"

If they made the player a gray warden players would call bioware lazy and unorginal, if the didnt and made him something else, they would say bioware was taking away all the good things in the first game.

And no, I think a dev said that Hawke was not going to be a warden.

Wardens aren't imbued with anything other than the ability to sense Darkspawn and kill Archdemons. That's it. They can't fly, they don't get super-strength, roughly paraphrasing Alistair about Templars, "To anyone that isn't a darkspawn, I'm just a guy in a metal suit."

Aha, I forgot. Makes you immune to the taint, which would be rather useful for Hawke. I'm interested in how they're going to hand-wave that thing, though it didn't seem to be a big problem for the majority of your party in DA:O.

You are something much larger here, as
the champion of Kirkwall we should expect some benefits too. I loved
being a Grey Warden too, and I wouldn't mind being one in real life (if I
had a guarantee I would survive the joining). .

That's a little silly. You want to essentially infect yourself with HIV that has a side effect of allowing you to sense creatures that don't exist and kill the boss of said creatures that also doesn't exist?

haha you got me there...well lets say they did exist :P Then I wouldn't mind

Plus, what would you do? Your going to rise to power only to be dead in 30 years? What is the point? There is no blight, and hardly any darkspawn after Awakening.

Judging by the trailer it's more likely Hawke becomes an abomination than a Grey Warden. Also Grey Wardens fight Blights, Hawke is headed in the opposite direction.

If jerk hawke is anything like jerk sheploo, then being a douche may make it so everyone wants to sleep with him.

Jerk Sheploo is so dreamy. The Hawke thread has already figured out that jerk Hawke is just really angry about everything all the time!

The trailer is not cannon and is nothing to base your assumptions on.

I think it'd be cool if you have to choice to become one but you don't have to if you don't want to

I'd say, depending on your choices in the game, yes and no. I don't know if they decided to make him one though (Bioware, that is).

In the videos Q-A Gaider said Hawke's story is not tied to the wardens. So i'd say no.

The dark spawn are not the main enemy in DA:2 they are just remnants. So being a warden would not be a great story. You also leave flee ferelden instead of fighting dark spawn. It would be kind of silly to run from the blight and then say hey im going to be a grey warden now.

Why is it essential he be a Grey Warden? Not everyone that fights the good fight is a Grey Warden. Hell they are just men who find they are doomed to a short life, they get no special powers or anything. There is no reason to think that any random dude who is a good man(or woman), can't be just as heroic. Grey Wardens were our introduction to this new world and Bioware franchise, they aren't the only thing this game is about.

As for earlier remarks that the Achdaemon is dead, hence no need for Grey Wardens. That is a mistake made throughout history and hinted at many times in the history of this new world.

Hey, we've had peace since I can remember, screw these Grey Wardens who think they are special. They haven't involved themselves in my wars(against neighbors), so the world doesn't need them.

Then when they are needed, there are few, and the world whines and complains that the Grey Wardens let them down! Or, even worse, they are mistrusted as a military force that might upset the balance of civil wars and petty wars between nobles who have been fighting with each other since the last blight.

Lastly, Bioware might want this man to continue as a story for quite a while. Once you are a Grey Warden, you are not only taken out of politics(well shoud be taken out of politics), but you are also a walking dead man. Hard to plan a long history for a character, when he'll walk into the deep roads to die in his late 30's or early 40's? It would be very lame to cure him, for the sake of the story, and totally destroy the sacrifice Wardens make.

I don't think I want Hawke to be a Warden.  Sure, you're "special" if you're a warden, but it's kind of a sucky deal, overall.  Short lifespan, nightmares, infertility, the list goes on.  It's a prolonged death sentence that you spend fighting Darkspawn.  Sure, it's a noble cause, but I would have much preferred to volunteer for it rather than be forced to join or be left to die (not that I think Duncan is that heartless, but that certainly seemed to be the ultimatum at the time).

No, Hawke needs to be a character with constancy and possibilities.  Becoming a warden would shove him/her into a corner.  Besides, Big Damn Hero-dom does not require that a character be The Chosen One in any capacity.  Normal people can be heroes too.

[hypocrite]....The fact I'm playing a mage has nothing to with my above argument.[/hypocrite]

BBCode is fun, I'm discovering.

I would be much less enthused about this game if Hawke were a Grey Warden. Been there, done that.

Dragon Age is about a specific time period in Thedas, and there are more heroes and people in the world of Thedas than just the Grey Wardens. I'm hoping for future adventures as my Warden, but right now what we have is the story of another hero who is NOT a Warden. It's your choice whether or not you want to keep an open mind about it.

SPOILER:

I seem to remember hearing abit ago that we'd be getting a companion who's a "disgraced" Ostegar vet (possibly meaning he/she fled the battle? which I guess wouldnt really make him/her a vet..)

He/She could be a warden? Maybe..

I dont have a source or any proof. So dont take me too seriously on this (if its at all possible for posters on this site to NOT take something serious.)

I agree, being a Grey Warden was fun, but there's way more to the setting than this one organization. I'm happy that we *aren't* going to be Wardens.

Grey Warden's fight darkspawn and archdemons and deal with Blights. The Blight is finished now and to be honest I would be pissed if in DA2 if the major adversary were still darkspawn because that's what I spent the entirety of the first game trying to defeat.

Enough with Wardens. Time for something else.
