...will the story differ? For instance, if you choose to make Hawke a mage will there be an explanation of how s/he avoided the Circle of Magi?

By not performing magic in public?

I thought the Circle had ways to find magic users, which is how they pick up kids with potential. Or maybe they will just retcon that.

potentially yes. He is a local hero "who will rise to power" after all, He CAN'T be an apostate because as a public figure he has to either be certified or be Zerg rushed by Templars all the time

Or he simply could have escaped Lothering and the blight whiile young and have been inducted into the Circle at Kirkland. . .

They don't. Other people find them.

They can track them with blood samples though.

I sure hope so.  There is no reason not to make the RP and gaming experience between each class even more different than before without the race choice.

But at a young age it seems that they cannot control their magic (Wynne, Connor, etc) . That's why they're sent to the Tower (one of the reasons anyway) so they can learn to control their magic.

But if Hawke was still a kid when Lothering was attacked and wasn't at the Circle, presumably s/he would have no phylactery that the Ferelden Chantry could track. Hawke could of course have joined a different Circle once in the Free Marches...

...but I wanna be an apostate and thumb my nose at the Chantry. There's probably a reason why my favorite characters in DA so far are Morrigan and Anders ><

Hawke could be a different king of mage using different powers.

S/he'd still be an apostate though. Morrigan used powers different from Chantry mages (shapeshifting) and she was still considered an apostate.

I would imagine so. Perhaps he has managed to hide his powers.

Another possibility is that, though there are no origin stories that we know of in DA2, perhaps there are sorta/kinda origin stories for each class WITHIN Kirkland. I doubt it, but who knows?

Maybe hawke's powers don't show until after Lothering? and his/her parents don't know thier kid is a mage?

the Free Marches could have totally different rules on Mages, compared to Fereldan or Orlais.....

which would be epic, cuz being slapped with the Circle/Chantry/Templar thing really sucked....

Well, if he/she was only a kid during the destruction of Lothering, and escaped, you could certainly understand why the Circle might not have found him. They were having plenty of troubles of their own (and might even have been purged).

When they say that this will take place over ten years, I'm guessing there will be a Fable sort of intro section where he/she is young and "chooses" a class.

Morrigan lived in a swamp, and Anders was always on the run

Hawke is a PUBLIC HERO. So he has to show off his magic in public, and then Circle realizes they have no records of him. And then the Chantry finds out and sends Templars. And since Hawke is such a big hero he can't run off into the woods can he?

Hawke will be forced to become part of the Circle one way or the other, nothing else explains how he can rise to power without being harrased by Templar always at every turn

Unless you start as an apostate? It'd be interesting to have magic powers and be discret about it.....

How can you be discrete about fireballs and lightning bolts and draining life out of enemies? ;)

I'm not saying it's necessarily going to happen :P  Just about the only place where an apostate would be welcome would be Tevinter, since the Imperial Chantry is decidedly more lax.  I know it's a long shot, but I really do want to see Tevinter.

It seems pretty obvious that Bioware is going to use some version of the ME engine/design, which means that the different classes will be about as diverse as the different background stories were in ME. By that I mean that some incidental dialog and/or small random encounters will be specific to your class.

As others have mentioned, there's nothing anywhere saying the Circle or Chantry have power in the Free Marches.
If anything Lore might suggest they wouldn't. The Tevinter Imperium, which shares a border with the Free Marches, has the Imperial Chantry not the Chantry of Andraste.
(according to the wiki linked, the IC isn't as hardcore about magic users.)

And maybe that's part of the "choosing your destiny" aspect of the game. Keep in mind they only said the game wouldn't have Origin stories. Never said there couldn't be missions and substories based on your class. Maybe MageHawke has to face off against the Circle.

I, for one, would like to be a mage who makes his/her own rules. I don't want to be tied down to the chantry this time.

That actually could be interesting......a recurring antagonist could be a Templar pursuing you, even if you were a "public" hero of sorts.....

Maybe mage will be replaced with biotics.
