If you think Mass Effect is a shooter, you probably played for 20 minutes and quit didn't you.
You gotta be trolling.

Even the devs are calling ME2 a shooter.

ME1 may have been "more" of an RPG, but the series has become a shooter.

If Mass Effect implented the online multiplayer feature, I bet that it will outsell the Call of Duty and Halo franchises

Agreed, ME2 was a shooter.

Calling that abomination an RPG is like calling TF2 an RPG.

Please don't instantly assume that 'a streamlined fighting system' means that DA2 will become a Mass Effect clone. Have you noticed that every time a game is announced, marketers will talk about streamlined mechanics, eternal life and endless mountains of gold? It's marketing speak, and nothing more.
There may indeed be changes to the system, but that in no way means that those changes will result in DA losing its RPG traits.

While I'm at it, why do people assume that the main character of DA2 will be voiced simply because we've given the poor chap a surname? He's never going to use his own name, so how could that possibly affect the chances of voice acting?
Yes, we may very well get a full VO for Hawke, but there's nothing indicating anything either way yet.

Nope it's been announced we ARE getting FULL VO for Hawke, which is why many of us are ticked.

Shooters are better than RPGs anyway :o

Seriously though. I always thought of Mass Effect as an Action Adventure. There are some RPG elements but they aren`t many. Thus ME2 for me was a better game than ME1 mechanics wise for sure.

As for DA2, I very much doubt they'll change the combat from the original. Or at least, not so much as to make the whole engine moot. I do think there are some tweaks that need to be made...combat in DAO was boring some times.

I honestly did not like DAO that much. I played it for a long time but ended up not finishing it. I bought it mainly to support BioWare and to get the (disappointing) ME2 armor. I absolutely loved the world they created, especially the brilliant story behind magic and the fascinating religion. The actual plot though never really grabbed me.

A lot of other things bugged me. The inventory interface was horrible. I was never able to get comfortable with the combat system (I have heard it was more intuitive on PC). The graphics were dated. Above all, I HATED the player character. I never felt any kind of connection to him what so ever.

I know that alot of you are scared of "Mass Effectification", but I don't know why. Honestly Mass Effect, especially the dialog and cut scenes, is just better than DAO. Full voicing alone would make Dragon Age twice as enjoyable. And strategy is great and everything, but there should be some twitch gameplay going on. This is not chess, I want to control my character, not give him commands.

I love the direction this appears to be going in. If they can implement an effective twitch melee combat system (no small feat, something similar to the Oblivion Unnecessary Violence mod would be perfect), and the same cinematic dialog and visuals as Mass Effect 2, this will be a guaranteed buy from me.

It does seem like this is a Dragon Age game for people who didn't like Dragon Age, so....good for you. Imagine how thrilled the real fans of the game are for your pleasure. Oh...yay.

I honestly believe that Mass Effect is the worst game Bioware has made to date, so no I am not happy about Dragon Age 2 being given the Mass Effect treatment.

Mass Effect 2 is by far the crappiest Bioware game ever made to date!

Its sad cause ME1 is my favorite RPG of all time.
ME2 was so bad and dumbed down ill probably skip ME3 until I can get it for under $10.00 in a bargin bin.

Gaider said the combat in DA2 will be the same as the combat in DA1 so im a little more at ease now but im still going to watch this title like a Hawk (pun intended, for pro ME2 players, go look up what pun means) and am prepared to skip this title as well if it goes the ME2 route in design!

Its time for Bioware to return to QUALITY RPGs and leave the twitch shooter combat crap to other developers!

Didn't play MW2...too expensive for what it is. But I do play more shooters than RPGs. Gaming for me started with FPS in the ole days of Wolfenstein 3D. I also love RPGs. But not that much. ME2 for me was a perfect blend of the two genres and that's why it's for me one of the best games I've ever played.

But I don't want DA to be anything like Mass Effect combat wise. With only a few improvements which are mostly balance related, the DAO system would be perfect.

I wonder why the hate against shooters though? The community is crap and I stay as far aways as possible from those guys, but the games themselves are fantastic.

Well, that was the first proper shooter to be released. The older ones weren't really genre defining. So in that sense, 1992 is old. There's a time range for something to be old now? Sheesh...

1992 is not old for good games in the FPS genre at all.

And the reason FPS games get so much hate is because well...they're FPS games...look at them!

I loved both games.

I honestly don't mind the direction that Dragon Age 2 is headed. I usually play human characters, and its not like customization has been thrown out. You can still customize Hawke's appearance, choose the gender and class, and you still make decisions and roleplay. Its not that big of a deal, so I don't even get the incessant complaining over a game we all know little to nothing about. Okay your race and name is predefined, but seriously...no one complained in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic that you played a human named Revan, or in Mass Effect that you're Shepard, its just a name come on now!

Now if Hawke was already predefined, had the story all laid out for him, your party members were forced on  you (not chosen), and it was like watching a movie in which all decisions were made for you, right down to Hawke's weapon, fighting style, and moral choices, then I'd have a problem. But as is its not so bad.

I for one will be looking forward to this game and looking forward to hearing more about it.

*ps...please implement polearms in the game* ;-)

That seems to me like hate for the sake of hating something. One can easily do that for any genre. Next you'll tell me that racing games are stupid because they are racing games <_<

It's not that I hate them,  it's that when I buy RPG's,  I don't expect to get a shooter.

It's made even more insulting when I bought Mass Effect 2,  expecting a sequel to Mass Effect,  to find pretty much all of the RPG stripped out and replaced by Shooter,  to then discover that the shooter gameplay is equivalent to Quake 2.

I like shooters as much as the next guy,  I just don't want every game to be a shooter,  and that's pretty much what it is today.

TB Strategy:  Panzer General,  Fantasy General, Master's of Orion,  X-com
Abstract Strategy:  Simcity,  Ceaser,  Tropico,  Railroad Tycoon
RPG:  Baldur's Gate,  DAO,  Fallout, Ultima
Adventure-Strategy:  Evil Genius,  Star Control
Simulation:  Not that into it,  so someone else can name names
Space-Sim:  Wing Commander,  Descent Freespace

They're all pretty much dead,  and it's unlikely it's for lack of ideas,  as Gamasutra's posted articles with dev's saying "If it isn't a shooter or RTS they don't want to hear it.".

Instead we turn RPG's into shooters,  like ME2 and Fallout 3.  So yeah,  little bitter,  I'm tired of nothing but shooters.

Other than NASCAR games, no. Things like Gran Tourismo and FORZA are fine. FPS games are the SAME thing each time. Put MW:2 and any other generic "iraq shooter" together and they're identical.

The issue is that the sequel is removing features.  Atleast, on its most basic level.

I think I preferred things when Bioware farmed out their sequels to Obsidian.  Obsidian actually built upon what the first game started, Bioware just cuts everything down while improving graphics/combat and everybody praises them for their brilliance.
