I remember the days of NWN as a mage...

"This chest won't open? Magic Missile! This guy won't talk? Magic Missile!" and so forth...

But I support the idea of letting mages and warriors open locks!

Lockpicking is technically a skill for non combat situations

Right, but the decision it imposed upon you was the same. To take the balanced party or deal with the consequence, which was essentially a lack of convenience, to one degree or another.

Lock Bashing is already in the games files (origins) there's a mod that unlocks it in addition to another that adds open lock spells.

Thats a basic download lol c'mon man.

So what do you do on xbox and ps3?

You feel sorry for yourself for not owning a PC? :P

I kid, I kid. Sort of.

Anyways, let's take a step back and remember how useless loot was for the most part. Not getting that malachite in that locked chest will have zero impact on your game. Promise.

Rogues have lockpicking of chests and doors and I assume trap manipulation, so let us warriors have areas sealed by lockless portals or portcullis' that only our strength can shift and let mages be able to unravel areas warded by rune barriers and use more utilitarian spells such as summoning light in the darkness etc.

Not everything needs to be combat related if you're a mage or warrior, because even the most stylistic and awesome fighting systems elicit a weary sigh when you're facing your hundredth small skirmish.

I would prefer to have a rogue in my party and I am a Mage... so I'm sorry to say you do not speak for me. I would also prefer to have traps that are truly deadly to make rogues even more necessary.

You do not speak for all warrior or mage players. I don't play as a rogue often. I almost always play a mage and I like that they can't open locks. It gives something to rogues that the other classes don't have, and I like my classes to have separate functions within a group.

no way! I liked the rogue (as weak as they were), mainly because it was Leliana > 3>.

Yeah, i do see a problem with some of the "master of unlocking" situations, but I don't mind having a rogue in the party, since balance in the group is always fun.

When I played, I had: Reina Amell (Warden Arcane Blood Mage), Sten (Reaver), Wynn (Arcane Spirit Healer) and Leliana (Bard and Assassin).

I always play a Mage, and I sometimes think it would be cool to have a lock bash option. I always feel pressured to have a rogue in my group whether I actually want one, or not. Also no I can't just "ignore the chests". I'm crazy like that.

I'm rather happy with Rogues having abilities Mages and Warriors don't. Just add obstacles to 'hidden' areas that can only be accessed by certain Magic/Strength abilities and you'll simply need one of every class in the team to get all this restricted loot.

/EDIT

I'm reminded of the class doors in Dungeon Seige 2, where you needed to be advanced a certain amount in a class to blast them open. Maybe nothing so blatant, but using the same skills outside of combat as inside to get into otherwise inaccessible areas (or chests) makes them more interesting.

I think lockpicking is learnable by all intellegent creatures. Maybe rogues get it from the start and it is more difficult for warriors and mages to upgrade? Maybe, just a thought.
