I think I can speak for all warriors and mages...

"This chest won't open? Magic Missile! This guy won't talk? Magic Missile!" and so forth...
But I support the idea of letting mages and warriors open locks!

Right, but the decision it imposed upon you was the same. To take the balanced party or deal with the consequence, which was essentially a lack of convenience, to one degree or another.Shinannigan wrote...
Lockpicking is technically a skill for non combat situations

Lock Bashing is already in the games files (origins) there's a mod that unlocks it in addition to another that adds open lock spells.
Thats a basic download lol c'mon man.
So what do you do on xbox and ps3?

You feel sorry for yourself for not owning a PC?
I kid, I kid. Sort of.
Anyways, let's take a step back and remember how useless loot was for the most part. Not getting that malachite in that locked chest will have zero impact on your game. Promise.

Not everything needs to be combat related if you're a mage or warrior, because even the most stylistic and awesome fighting systems elicit a weary sigh when you're facing your hundredth small skirmish.

Yeah, i do see a problem with some of the "master of unlocking" situations, but I don't mind having a rogue in the party, since balance in the group is always fun.
When I played, I had: Reina Amell (Warden Arcane Blood Mage), Sten (Reaver), Wynn (Arcane Spirit Healer) and Leliana (Bard and Assassin).

/EDIT
I'm reminded of the class doors in Dungeon Seige 2, where you needed to be advanced a certain amount in a class to blast them open. Maybe nothing so blatant, but using the same skills outside of combat as inside to get into otherwise inaccessible areas (or chests) makes them more interesting.
