In addition to full VO <_< for the character of Hawke, our dialogue system is now that of Mass Effect's!

"Dragon Age II uses a conversation system similar to Mass Effect's,
where players select paraphrased versions of the dialogue from a wheel.
An icon in the middle of the wheel even illustrates the line's basic
intent (like aggressive or sarcastice), so you can focus more on the
interaction rather than reading and analyzing your dialogue choices."

quote from the GI issue

Dev confirmation post of Dialogue wheel

Mary Kirby wrote...

I haven't played Alpha Protocol yet,
so I can't compare the DA2 system with theirs. However, it looks like
you've got the gist of the new system. You have a wheel like Mass
Effect's, and when you move over a selection, you get an icon in the
center of the wheel that indicates the intent of the player line:
Flirty, violent, sarcastic, etc.

Another update: http://xbox360.ign.c.../1108057p1.html
"We also got to see the new conversation system. Dialogue has been
simplified so that you only have up to three choices. Each choice is
represented by an icon that indicates whether or it's a "good,"
"nasty," or "badass" choice. Good choices are represented by an olive
branch, nasty by a Greek comedy mask, and badass by a red fist. This is
an easy way to gauge what response your dialogue choices will produce."

thankfully the rest of the stuff mentioned seemed better than I expected. This game may still be salvageable.

Why Bioware? Most people like the DAO dialogue system better. Anyway DA2 sounds like a major let down. I wont even bother with it.

Unfortunate, but I'm hoping they can do a better job of matching the spoken lines to the "feel" of the paraphrased lines than they did in ME/ME2.

They've just got to remember to treat the lines like they're actually spoken in the middle of a conversation, and they don't all have to be like three sentences to say one thing.

Trying trying trying to remain positive about all this. I LOVED DAO, and I enjoy the ME games, just don't want such a promising start to a franchise mimic the ME games.

While I accepted the dialog wheel in ME for that was part of ME's "charm", but the idea of that in DA is just loathsome.

Out of curiosity what happened over the past year that made Bioware decide to go this route of fixed PC with VO and ditching traditional dialog system? Was it the singular success of ME2? was it decided prior to ME2's release? Are there other future DA games planned more in the style of traditional rpgs?

Inquiring minds want to know!

dialogue WHEEL??? has bioware gone insane?! we're all gonna die!!!

it actually might not be that big a deal. ME2 seems to pull it off well. w/o limiting options and alternate courses of action

I'll have to see some ingame examples of said dialogue wheel before I'll either break out a bottle of champagne and do my happy dance or climb the highest building in the city and start shooting up random people.

Honestly, I prefer AP's dialogue wheel if we have to adopt this ridiculous system. The paraphrasing never works since you have no idea what the ultimate meaning of the phrase will be until it's picked. At least Alpha Protocol removed this illusion of player participation altogether and just had you adopt stances like smarmy or jerk.

I also don't see how removing the player's ability to properly respond to the social interaction actually makes them focus more on the interaction. Sounds like backwards reasoning.

Though, I'm aware this makes writing incredibly easy. Boo, I say. Boo to dialogue wheels and boo to VOs.

Lets have 0 VO and go for all text to make the game longer and make making mods easier.

The paraphrasing and guessing the exact intentions of the PC kills all RP. It straight up murders it.

And to boot the voiced PC means less dialogue elsewhere given VO costs and likely a shorter more rigid game.

I seriously question the thought processes of whoever is making these big design decisions for DA. Making DA into a ME with swords may be what the mainstream Bro crowd wants, but its not what made Origins successful.

I'm in doubt that DA2 will even have a toolset.

They really *don't* want fans of Dragon Age: Origins to buy DA2, do they?

I haven't heard any news yet that makes me think that they value the audience they already had.

Wow.

Am I the only one going "WTF I WANNA SEE WHATS IN THAT GI" that you people say you already have? Someone scan or post info! It's supposed to be a 10page article full of info about DA2! Why am I not seeing spams of threads about new info?!
