The origin stories were actually my favorite aspect of DA:O. I played through each origin at least once, and most a few times, before going even halfway through the rest of the game. It really helped the feeling of being immersed in the world to have experienced the different backgrounds/cultures from the inside before meeting up with them as an outsider. Seeing and interacting with the characters who I'd encountered in other origins made the world feel much richer. The occasional alteration in the rest of the game based on the origin upped the replay value, though of course I wish the alterations had been more prevalent.

I appreciate the large amount of work that the origins entail, but for me the origins are what pushed DA:O from very good to great. Still looking forward to DA2 though ... just a little bit less than I was.

Meh, they're not what made DA great. They were nice, but I ended up just treating them as 8 extra hours of game.

Most full games are about 8 hours long.
"just"?

While I enjoyed the origins, I don't think they truly added much to the game. THey gave you a little bit of flavor but not anything significant; just a few conversations and things like that. I don't mind that they're gone.

I enjoyed the Origins too. The levels were interesting, and gave you an insight into the prior life of your character, but they weren't the best bit. Nor was the occasional dialogue in which someone would recognize you, give you a big hug, and then try and kill you. In my opinion, the best bit about the Origins was the fact that they established the motives and opinions of your character. For instance, each Origin story was essential in explaining why your character joined the Wardens, and why they're fighting to protect Fereldan.

Funnily enough, I don't feel that they'll be so necessary this time around. The origin stories might be nice to have, but in a really driven plot, the one origin story - fleeing from Lothering - seems sufficient to me.

In fact, my only worry about the loss of Origin Stories is that each new character we roll will go through all the same experiences, and then end up being shaped roughly the same. Attitudes won't differ, nor will experiences or acquaintances. In fact, each story is probably going to be utterly alike the last.

However, the decade of time that this game will span seems to be the perfect solution to this problem. Instead of shaping our characters prior to the game, we shape them through our own experiences in Thedas as we play.

It added a lot to the game and how you were treated throughout the game.

Now there won't anything new or different, cause you are just blah hooman.

I wanted to see them expand upon the involvement of Origins in the story narrative, not remove the concept entirely.

Any single origin looked at by itself isn't going to be a great story, they were too short to have that much depth individually. As a whole I think they added a lot.

I could summarize the whole game as:

"Eek darkspawn! Must gather improbable band of plucky heroes to save the world against impossible odds", but that wouldn't really do it justice.

There wasn't anything different about your treatment as an elf or dwarf either, just 2-3 additonal lines of dialogue.

I did, Rica marrys bhelen and forces you to side with the Josef Stalin of Dwarves, big whoop.

Harrowmont names you his succesor as a noble...yay?

Nothing about either of those two examples really stands out as something game changing to me.

I dissagree. I've never been filled with so much motivation to find a certain sonova **** and make his life a living hell, like I was after playing the Human Noble origin. Sure the idea behind it might have not been all that original, but it was very well done.

why should they do what they did for the first game?

it's like Mass Effect....they draw you in with it...the rpg mechanics..armor/weapon/etc customization....it needed work yah...but...

once they drew people in they turned it into Gears of War: A Mass Effect Tale...dumbed it down to bring in the pwnface boomheadshot idiots.

so with origins..they give core fans, the ones that made bio and stuck with them, DA:O....

now, like ME2, it's time to say **** you core fans....and dumb it down to make it appeal to the pwnface crowd..only this time it may be the diablo loot****s instead of the rampage teabag crowd.

That's the feeling I got with ME and now in DA. Nothing was fixed with ME, they just gutted it and put out a simplistic, even a caveman can do it, ME2.

I shudder to think of what stupidity is if it is not using the terms "pwnface" and "boomheadshot idiots."

Rage harder.

I'm kind of surprised by how many people say that the differences between origins were only a few lines of dialogue. I found the mage origin and the human noble origin to provide many many many differing lines of dialogue and possible responses. I guess, yeah, if you do the quickie playthrough where you skip right to the end of every dialogue tree and don't talk to any optional NPCs, it might seem identical, but I didn't find that to be the case at all.

EDIT:  I mention these two as they are the only two I've then gone on to complete full playthroughs.  Working on City Elf now.

I wounder if we can import our players to this Dragon Age game.. I'm still looking for Morrigan and still no traces of her.. On a serious note I am stoked to see that Dragon age is already coming out with the sequel can't wait to see what is going to be in store for us... If Dragon Age II is anything like the first one I need to clear my calander for atleast a few weeks so I can spend my weekends playing and enjoying this game like I did with Dragon age Origins..

can't wait for this game to Drop I need to start saving a little side cash for this game..  There is too many games releasing that I want to enjoy this year into next...

I wonder if we'll be able to choose a part of Hawke's backstory ourselves, like in Mass Effect.

I think a lot of people miss the most important thing the Origins did for the story: They provided a different perspective on the entire game world. (some areas more than others)

If you were a dwarf noble for example and you walk into Orzammar you're going to have a completely different take on the political situation than a Mage who was walking in with no context for the situation. Consequentially, the decision you make is going to be drastically different with that new context. This extends to other, less extreme parts of the game. If you were a Mage you're going to have a much better understanding of the threat mages face from demons and why templars lock up mages (whether you agree or disagree) than you will as a dwarf commoner whose never seen a mage and barely knows what magic is. Being a Human Noble provides a personal motivation against Howe, you're not just hearing about all the **** stuff he's done you've actually experienced it yourself, and thusly you're going to consider him to be more of a villain.

Each origin had fifteen minutes of fame at various intervals of the game.  It wasn't a huge deal.

And by the whole "your stuck being a Mary Sue in Ferelden" thing. And you can't choose your race. And theres no Origin story, and theres no Grey Warden, and theres VO.

Whether it sucks or not its still nothing like the first one.
