Considering DA2 starts off at the same time as DAO, why would the presence of Darkspawn surprise you?

No problem with Darkspawn as long as they shake 'em up a bit. Would be nice to have some interesting or harder bad guys to slice and dice!

Every rpg needs to have its trademarks. I hope that the series doesn't someday abandon darkspawn and dragons altogether and basically only share the title of the game. Dragon fights=awesome!

There are two remaining old gods to slay out of the seven, and if Bioware does want to move away from darkspawn at some point, I hope that we get to at least finish them off first.

Yeah, but they are a silly and really cliched enemy. For one, they're basically Orcs. Second, in Origins, the main villain was just a big dragon. The plotline for Origins was extremely run of the mill and easy to see coming, in large part because the darkspawn were such a dull enemy. You know what, if there's something really generic or not particularly interesting in a setting, why not make it a smaller part of the franchise?

There are way more interesting bits that you could go into in terms of lore for DA. The qunari are one of the most interesting groups in Thedas, especially since they are far outside that Tolkien mould, and I would love to see a game that focuses more on them.

Partial agreement.

Don't get me wrong, it's fine to relegate darkspawn to something like a faceless monster encounter where you're given a sidequest to kill all the darkspawn in a forest, but to make them the main focus again is just not a good idea.

Except DA:O real plot was the political story of loghain. The Darkspawn where there as a background antagonist driving the actions of the hero and his/her villain.

A dark threat comes to the land at a time when the lands of dwarves, men and elves are divided.  To defeat this threat, these groups have to resolve their own conflicts in order to fight the greater threat and save their country. We've seen this a million times before. Yeah, there were some good subplots like your Urn of Sacred Ashes questline and Redcliffe, but the overarching plot was not really remarkable.

The Loghain plot did have some interesting bits, but again, it was not the main story, which was about defeating the Blight.

I understand what you're getting at. The darkspawn are kinda like zombies in a Romero flick - the story isn't about a bunch of heroes killing zombies, it's about how people react to crisis. But I don't think that was the case here, because after the Loghain situation is resolved, you've still got that big boring dragon to fight.
