I understand loving the classics, but what if Bioware kept making the exact same game system as the original, simply creating new storylines and dungeon crawls? Gamers would lose interest, and I'm sure even Bioware would begin to get bored of it. It would be like writing a choose-your-own-adventure book, then slapping combat mechanics on it without even risking the question of, "What can I do to make this better?"
I agree with you that I miss a lot of elements from the classics, and that Bioware often seems to not have a clue how to listen to feedback from players, but its the fact that they're taking risks in making their games that I think truly puts them in the ranks of good gaming. I doubt that they just combined the Mass Effect system with the Dragon Age system anyway without any fresh ideas.

It's that "based on what we've seen so far" type of thing. I can think of a few other yet-to-be-released games where I'm kinda having a similar reaction. Hype is one thing, but substance is another.

Much as I love DA one of the biggest annoyances to me was that my Warden just looked a doll almost all the time, staring and reacting to almost everything with those creepy dead eyes.

As you can see I have both games registered unlike you. It is good but took some getting used to. People are always so quick to judge a change. That being said...I still think it is far to early to say and until then what's the point of expending all this negative energy. If it becomes Dragon Effect...then freak out...until then...RELAX.Dileos wrote...

I've read alot of your respones on the forum about the new dialogue style based on interacting rather than interrogating and I gotta say I love the idea and the direction you did it in DA:A. I know close to nothing about the game so far but I'm getting the impression that with this new wheel it will give even more depth to the dialogue and I just wanna say keep up the good work, and I love where this is going!
I'm a fan of deep, long stories and I have full faith you know what you are doing Mr. Gaider! Just some positive opinions for you in what seems to be a storm of raging prejustice and anger all over the forums.

You've got to be flippin joking.
"Recruit the deadliest of allies".
Supposedly that means the plot is like ME2's?
THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT WE DID IN DRAGON AGE ORIGINS! WE RECRUITED THE DEADLIEST OF ALLIES FOR A WAR!

Keep on preaching! Seriously, I'd love to hear from the devs higher up who made these big decisions to turn DA2 into an ME spinoff. Whats the point? I thought BioWare was all about having a diverse portfolio of games with both a third person narrative like ME and a first person narrative like DAO? Giving up? What?
Lucy_Glitter wrote...
Seriously, your problem was you ignored the protagonist, you didn't give them enough cinematic time. So now you just go, "Oh! Wipe it out!" When you could have done so much with it.
Exactamundo! Its the same problems they had with ME2; instead of fixing things that didn't work well in ME1 like the inventory or Mako, they just abandoned them and gutted them altogether. There are plenty of ways to inject more life into the PC without having to make him/her Shepard 2.0.
Lucy_Glitter wrote...
I don't want everything RPG to be Mass Effect now. You are too scared to go another route. Apparently Dragon Age sold more than ME, even.
Right. I'm being totally serious here. Why did the devs and the leads feel it necessary to abandon the first person narrative? Because to make DA more "mainstream" and "accessable" you had to dumb it down for the rubes that can't be bothered to read a few lines of dialogue before hitting "escape" because "rEedin' iz DuM"?
Lucy_Glitter wrote...

Bingo. I don't know if its just the exaggerated marketing or what, but all the DA2 info I've absorbed thus far makes me NOT want to have anything to do with this "sequel." Its just been all down hill since Origins came out and DA2 only looks to continue that trend further down the spiral.
Prove me wrong, BioWare....

I hope that's not true. I might understand how some people who enjoyed every part of Dragon Age: Origins-- the bad along with the good-- might not like even the mere mention of change, but it's my experience that any system comes with its advantages as well as disadvantages. I'd be glad to discuss some of them with you... once we've even said what our implementation of these systems will be like. That information will come in time.

The problem aout DA wasn't that the protagonist was silent, but that her/his face was blank. All it would have taken was some facial animations, one thing ME DOES do well.
Protagonist VA, more combat, no character continuation... and Hawke... *cringes*. I am still waiting for something to be excited about!!!!

I'd just like some sort of explanation or reasoning why the ME style changes were made for DA2. I'm legitimately, seriously confused on this issue. Muzyka and Zeschuk stated many times in past interviews how DA was designed to be different than ME for a reason. So why turn your back on all that made DA unique?
This saddens me- I want to like this game, but with each new tidbit released its like they're marketing it to ME fans, not DA fans.

Most of us expected DA2 be a direct continuation of the story of DA:O, it is not, I'm not saying DA2 has to be the same game, I'm saying that it could atleast directly in some way relate to DA:O, so far I see none but a whole new Dragon Age title that should be called Dragon Age: Rise of Hawke rather than DA2Darth Jayder wrote...

Now when did we hear that before? Oh right, it was before the release of ME 2.
It's nice to see that BioWare employees still participate in the forums by the way, if only with the well-known PR speak. I assume once DA 2 has been released, there'll be silence again though, like on the ME 2 forums now?

Sure, it's a couple of pictures, a few pieces of info, but they are pretty crucial.

"Return to your roots"? Whatever.
I am so upset, honestly. This is not a fan overreacting, this is a fan whose been let down too many times by you guys.
I so agree with you Lucy and im right there with you!
My first concern came with the 20 hour game called Jade Empire but I over looked its flaws because I liked the story and the characters and while combat sucked huge and game was way to short, I forgave!
Then I played KotOR2 and saw how much better KotOR1 could have been, appearently the Bioware guys that left Bioware did have good ideas, but still I forgave
ME came out and I LOVED THAT GAME! Hated the shooter combat but it was minimal so I didnt begrudge Bioware for trying something new as long as they stuck to their roots, and they did!
then DA:O came out and I wanted to hate the game because it was fantasy but it was just to good and to addictive! I was flying high and loving these games and looking so forward to ME2
Then ME2 came out and I was soooo disappointed
After argueing with the pro ME2 shooter kids I finally accepted that ME wasnt going to be a RPG title anymore and I would just have to wait for DA2 for my RPG fix.
And now this. My disappointment honestly cant be discribed fully! I was in love with the DA:O world, as much as I was in love with the Mass Effect world and seems both now are being dumbed down for a new generation of gamers! What happened to making things better and better? When did we start to accept less and less on our products!
I wasnt to concerned over the VO because people can always turn that off in the options and read the subtitles. But the ME2 dialog wheel??? Thats like having jet packs and going backwards to flapping your arms like they wings. The DA:O dialog choices were so indepth and you knew what you were saying when you made the choice. I never know exactly what im saying with the dialog wheel.
The hits just keep coming.
I was a Bioware fan before many here played their first game but its almost like all the traditional Bioware devs have left and we left with new devs who think faster prettier glossier is better!
CONTENT is what drives RPGs!
At this point, the only thing I have to hold onto is Gaider writing this. I can only hope he stands up for substance over flash when it comes to story and interactions.

Hmm...I get the subtle impression that you're somewhat upset about Dragon Age 2, no?
Seriously though, I can appreciate that there are things about DA's new direction that you
do not care for; and, in point of fact, I found your Argument well laid out and forthright with-
out coming off as too much of a whiner. None the less, I feel you *are* going out on a
Stretch in certain places.
For one, you assertation that BioWare has taken all the features out of the series that the
"Fans" enjoyed is a bit overbearing; BioWare may have taken elements out that *You* and
some others enjoyed, but to say that "All Fans" feel as cheated as you is slightly presum-
tuous. Are folks who enjoyed DA:O not loving the VO, new combat details, etc? They're not. Do
you and those others emcompass *all* the Fans? Not even close. There may be alot of
Hate threads up right now, but it's common knowledge that Forums are mostly dominated
by those who want to complain about something, as opposed to those who are happy and
feel no need to go on and on and on about something not crucial to the excellence of the
aforementioned game at all; as such, the Haters may not be, and likely are not, in the
Majority. I will admit I don't have solid numbers, but I'd be willing to bet BioWare does, and
it's those numbers that are fueling DA's new Direction.
Your assumption that Fans of the Series didn't want a more indepth Cinematic experience
with a Vocalized character was also overbearing. Again, even though you did not care for
the idea that Dragon Age's Hero recieve a full Voice Over, there are others who certainly
did, and no, they were not only Mass Effect fans. It's easy to find a nostaligic level of attach-
ment to the old school Final Fantasy, D&D text based dialogue, but the simple fact of the
matter is that this is the 21st century, and there are more members of the new guard
everyday (those who enjoy an RP experience added to by well acted and emotionaly accurate
dialogue) and less and less members of the old guard who love nothing more than to scroll
down a list of lines during a scene where response and emotion are key to the moment.
The succes of RPGs like Red Dead Redeption are proof positive of this.
Your statement that BioWare has chosen to now Ignore the Protaganist? Seriously? BioWare
choosing to provide a central Hero/Anti Hero with a 10-Year-Long story is "Ignoring" the
Protaganist? And how is creating a lengthy, in depth Life story "Wiping all that out,"?
Lastly, you say BioWare is afraid to go "Another Route." However, that's exactly what they're
doing, taking *some* mechanics that have proven successful elsewhere and playing with
them, adding to them, and taking Dragon Age in a *New* Direction. What you really want to
say is that you're upset that BioWare is not sticking to the things that *you* like, and that's
why they are "Afraid to do something different," or rather "Afraid to keep the things you want,"
Also, Dragon Age sold better than Mass Effect 1? Do you have the sales figures on hand?
A link? If not, assuming such a thing does not add well to your argument. In the End, BioWare
has the experience and the pedigree to know what works, and what doesn't. Beside all the
Hate thier titles have recieved from supposed "Fans" every-single-one of thier Games have
gone on to gross big numbers both Critically and Commercially. So, to come in and say,
"I know better than you about what the Fans want," is just so myopic and self-obsorbed. The
day you start a Multi-International, Billion Dollar Game Studio and have years and years of Top
Rated Triple-A titles, than feel free to come back and tell BioWare "How it Should be done,"
