That's cute, how you think DA2 is still in a stage where this is possible.

Probably not. So what? The poll made regarding this had 55 % against VA, but still it comes. It isn't like Bioware gives a damn what we think about DA2.

God, don't remind me that I watched Legend of Chung-Li last night.

Why would you do that to yourself? That's like eating 5 Whoppers in 20 minutes. Only for your brain.

It's funny how suddenly Cousland is the best name ever. I remember many people NOT liking it when it was first revealed, they said it sounded like food or something and ranted about how the dwarves got a better name.

I didn't like it either but I wanted to play a noble human so I was stuck with it and guess what... I got USED to it, now I can't imagine my human noble with any other name. I thought Revan was a weird name too when it was first mentioned in KOTOR and later I grew quite fond of it. The same will happen when people actually play Hawke and it isn't just a name anymore.

Do you have a link to this super-serious and scientific internet poll?

You couldn't do this in DA:O either.

I'm fine with Hawke, I won't mind being called Hawke either. Not something I will lose any sleep over. In an ideal world I'd be able to name my character what I wanted but what would the NPCs then call you? Dude or Dudette?

I don't care about the name so much as I want to make my own character. I want to play an Elf again.

If you know they can't do it, why do you demand that they do?

We did get to choose our surname is DAO. We got to choose from a list of seven options.

If we must have just one, I'm fine with Hawke (though I dispute that we must have just one - they could have designed the game to avoid it), but I would then like more freedom to choose a first name than DAO provided.

DAO had a 10 character limit, and didn't allow spaces.

What I'm wondering is how Hawke him/herself will handle introducing themselves.

I'm Hawke. This is my sister Bethany Hawke.. No, I don't know my own first name. is that so odd?

I'm just glad no one will (hopefully) call me Warden anymore. That was insanely annoying.

"Hey Alistair I hear you and The Warden are together"

"... I have a name..."

"Yeah I really love The Warden..."

But if you chose by surname, you were limited by origin. :P

Possibly one of the only reasons I enjoyed being a Human Noble, they refer to you as Cousland a little bit more and that leaves less "The Warden" scenarios in the game. :P

We didn't just get to choose a name we liked though.
Say your heart was set on playing a human warrior - you were stuck with Cousland unless you picked a different race or origin. If you wanted to be a dwarven noble Aeducan was the only choice. I don't think a player that doesn't like to play dwarves chose a dwarven noble just because he liked the name better than all the rest.. Each origin came with a set name and if you didn't like it you didn't have a choice.

I admit, it's a bit suck-ish to go from a game that allows you to play any race you want, to a game (that's the sequel) that limits you to playing only as a human. I, myself, am always drawn to playing as an Elf so I feel your pain. However, I'm over it. BioWare makes great games and I'm a huge fan, so I'm sure they made up for the loss in DA2.

Yeah, but what's in a name? So you choose your own last name, nobody will call you by it regardless. Whatever you or I named our characters, the game didn't really respond to it. The only meaningful responses in-game as a result of your name came if you were Dwarven or Human Noble with their set names, which is understandable. Real character customization IMO involves allowing you to create a character with a unique set of skills and abilities that can't simply become amazing at everything once they reach a certain level (Fallout 3, I'm looking at you).

If anything, I think a set name might be better in certain situations to make dialogue flow better at times. I always thought it would be weird in Mass Effect when my PC would be flirting with Ashley/Liara, and they'd respond by calling him "Shepard". Who flirts with someone and addresses them by their last name? It's just weird.

Yes, but you still got to choose.

Claiming there was no choice is disingenuous.

But choosing my race for the sake of a surname? I wouldn't consider it as a part of the choice, because the surname was merely tacked on to the chosen race...

Anyways, If we couldn't chose a surname, we would have to expect that the characters around us to call us by something else (like "the Warden" in DA:O). It would be cool if as you play DA2, and as you make important decisions throughout the story, that people would recognize you for different reasons. Still, having a last name allows for personal conversation; I think it would be better for a party member to call me "Hawke", my set last name, then a title.

how is that different from having the same situation and be called "Hawke"?
