how is that different from having the same situation and be called "Hawke"?

Well, technically, that's your last name. It's more understandable than being called by your title constantly. I've had people call me by my last name instead of my first, I'd much rather be called "Hawke" than "Warden" or "Grey Warden".

Drop the VA, and allow us to choose our own name.

That's cute, how you think DA2 is still in a stage where this is possible.

Probably not. So what? The poll made regarding this had 55 % against VA, but still it comes. It isn't like Bioware gives a damn what we think about DA2.

As a great man once said, "Democracy is two lions and a lamb deciding on what's for dinner."

Oh, and another. "Think of how stupid the average person is, then realize that half of them are even dumber than that."

Fortunately, democracy has jack squat to do with game development. I'd rather have Bioware make the game they want than have them cater to polls and petitions. It's just people trying to force their ideas down other folks' throats.

They could make the Voice-over optional without changing anything else.

They probabaly won't, but they could.

Well may not be democracy, but the people 'vote' on the game with their money. But what can I say, people actually vote for bad Presidents, so they probably also pay for bad games.

This is ridiculous. When it comes to the name, what does it matter? You may not like the name Hawke, but pretending that there was any actual depth to even *having* a name in DAO is delusional. Aside from a few references to Aeducan or Cousland, the surnames had no mention, much less the given name. You were still "Warden". Your LIs called you Warden. You could have named your character Aaaaaaa and it would have had as much meaning in-game as a well thought out name you spent hours searching for.

Even if being called Hawke pisses you off, acting like it is such a radical change from being called "Warden" is kind of ridiculous.

But if you chose by surname, you were limited by origin. :P

Yes, but you still got to choose.

Claiming there was no choice is disingenuous.

It's a false choice, though. Yes, you get to pick a name, but nobody ever will reference it. The name thing is really a flavour choice in the most shallow sense of the phrase. It adds nothing and changes nothing. Choice in gender/origin is meaningful in that it gives you unique dialogue, occasionally different ways to complete quests (marrying Anora/Alistair if you're a Human Noble, entering the Fade to confront the demon yourself if you're a mage), but it doesn't matter one bit whether I name my character Bob or George or Phil.

I'm with you. If anything, a pre-set name with a completely customizable character might be preferable in some of the LI dialogue. It's so weird to have your LI refer to you as "Warden" sometimes. I go to college, and my girlfriend has never said something like "Student, pick me up at 8:00 tonight". It can feel really unnatural.

Now I'm not saying we should remove character customization options altogether (on the contrary, I think BioWare hasn't done enough in this regard), I'm just saying that we shouldn't pretend that really shallow flavour choices suddenly matter.

*facepalm*
If you know they can't do it, why do you demand that they do?

I don't demand they do anything. I merely voice my dissapointment with what they do, just as you voice your satisfaction with what they do.

You voice your disappointment by telling them to do something. Bwahahaahaha.

The problem is that the voices takes up a lot of disc-space, and every line they need to have acted costs money. It is such a waste of resources that could be spend so much better, IMO. Imagine Torment fully voice-acted... you'd probably have four DVD's, instead of four CD's.

Sure, but DA2 ha a voice.  That;'s not going away.

I'm trying to find away for those of us who oppose to voice to be able to play the game and still enjoy it.

A more relevant quote might be, "A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul."

When I was born, I couldnt choose my own name. wtf!

And thats when I changed my named to Max Powers the Third.

To be honest, Hawke is not a very good name, too cliche for my tastes.  The last names in DAO were Aeducan (sp?) and Cousland were pretty good because they were believable.  But it really isnt that big of a deal to me.

What would you have preferred? Savage? Jones? Manning? Shepard? Fixed first name, undetermined last name?

Imagine it if you will...

A big burly bearded man with massive spiked armor, stained with the blood of his countless fallen foes.

He wields his massive blade, which would require even someone of nominal strength to wield two-handed. But he wields it with one as if it weighed as much as a butter knife.

What is the name of this cosmic force of pure raw power?

Fred Savage.

Hawke is such an anglo-saxon sounding name, that the idea of making an oriental, a latin, a scandinavian, a slavic or any other type is obviously out of the question. Confining, limiting and annoying.

*mutters about how marketing and franchise crap is ruining games.*

Your argument would be valid if DA took place on Earth.
