I assumed that the whole game's goal was to make him or her a Champion? But maybe that's a little too Fable-y. Still, it would explain the penniless refugee bit. That's how you begin, Champion is what you become, and the choices you make determine how and why you get there.

I see champion as a stepping stone.

Your suppose to change the world and make a legend.

I doubt you would stop at champion of a small part of thedas.

The ten years are advertised as being the period of time wherein Hawke rises to power.  Also, his adventure begins in the Free Marches.  Lothering is behind him.

How much more blatantly, patently blind can people be?

Maybe he was that little boy you talked to in Lothering that lost his mother?

Hawke can be a girl you know, so that link would be impossible.

Little boys and girls can be a little androgynous.

But ok.  Point taken.

I agree with you that it probably starts in Kirkwall just AFTER the flight from Lothering, but only  your first sentence is based on actual, confirmed fact. They've already said that there will be scenes from DAO seen from different viewpoints. Considering we have never been outside Ferelden, that probably means something from Lothering is involved. Whether it just means a cutscene or something actually playable is still anyone's guess.
