I see. I think this is a rather excessive reaction. Just because a kid would think it's cool, doesn't make it any less cool. Plus, you're not forced to play Hawke like an over-the-top B-movie protagonist.
As for your second point...
Most (human) names in DAO were meaningful (Alistair= "defender of men", Cailan= "child", Duncan= "brown chief" - I'm not making this up, look them up if you want to),
but the devs don't know how you'll play your Hawke. So they probably thought, "If we can't give the protagonist a meaningful name, let's at least give them a cool one".
Makes sense to me.
I think people should stop being so elitistic.
