I was thinking the other day sometimes I get a companion just so I can say I have everyone. It's like I like to do all the quests so I can say I have done everything.
I have found that I have played both games where there are characters I almost never use. I think in Mass effect 1 I almost never used Alenko or Wrex.I think had either Garrus,Tali, or Liara and when I went against Saren I had Tali and Liara with me.
In Mass Effect 2 you almost have to use everyone once with the loyalty quests. I think my team consists of Miranda, Garrus, and either Thane or Jacob.
I only used Jack on her loyalty quest and since my LI was Miranda Jack was mad at me after that so I didn't use her in the collector base, I used Samara.

Yeah, I also tend to use a select group instead of mixing it up. I usually go Mordin, Garrus, Tali, or Legion depending on mission.
I also only used Wrex once though it was because I had a bad experience with him. We were on the save Liara mission and he decided to charge one of the missile towers. I instruct him to get back into cover and what does he do? The exact opposite. I repeatedly tell him to take cover over a span of around 10 seconds which means that he willingly decided not to listen to me. Obviously, he died. I revived him and he repeats his charge on the missile tower. Wrex spent the rest of the story on Normandy's garage.

I most always play a soldier and my squads are set up as me being the tank and one biotic and the other is either tech or another gun.
In ME1 I had myself as the tank Liara as biotic and Tali as tech or Ash/Garrus as the other gun I think I only used Alenko for the first mission and by the time we left the Citadel hes was taking up a table in the mess.
In ME2 I am the tank with Miranda as tech/biotic and either Garrus or Jacob but lately I have ben subbing in Thane.

I never used Kaiden 'virmire' Alenko. he just annoyed me.
I've found pretty much every single ME2 squadmate to be useful.
but I still rarely use jacob. cause he's more bland than a meal of biege paper and cardboard, and his squadmate banter makes me want to punch him in the face.
