Basically, from this, it seems that the biggest changes are rolling down for the console versions -- which actually does make sense. I tried DA on the 360, and it felt meaningfully different. It also felt meaningfully worse.

The fact is that the console versions needed the changes, while the PC version didn't.

My only hope now is that DA2 be fully optimized for the PC, like its predecessor. While Mass Effect 2 was pretty good on the PC, it felt like a console port (can't press enter to select?), ableit a mostly good one.

Here is the quote that leaves me more than happy...

“The PC version implements the same strategic approach afforded by a
mouse-and-keyboard control scheme. Rather than try to mimic the PC
experience on consoles, Dragon Age II has a battle system more tailored
to the strengths of the PS3 and 360.”

Yes, there still are some concerns, but I have a feeling that DA2 PC will be as PC focused as DA1.

Yeah, the combat in DAO on PC was great--better than an intense action game.  So I was glad to see this article.

That and I just don't feel like a whole person if I can't control the camera with my mouse.

Hope the people who scream and shout how choices from DA:O will not be carried over and how Bioware ruined everything can read this and be calmed down now...

That's good to hear. The combat system isn't perfect in DA:O, but it's not unfixable for a sequel and it beats the pants out of most other 'RPGs'.

Well, the BG/DA:O system is good for RTS like comabt for sure, but it doesn't make much sense in RP point of view. How can you be the someone but also be the camera that looking at someone and the whole battlefiled from above at the same time?

Didn't really expect them to change the way combat worked on the pc since that was perfectly fine.

Glad to see all the fears on these forums turned out to be unfounded.

I look at it like this.  In DA combat, you're not just controlling the Warden (and that's a good thing).  You're controlling the party.  A player can't actually view things from every party member's eyes (in real time especially) because our brains aren't really wired to comprehend that.  So having a free camera and pausing system is a closer approximation to being able to get your party to behave as they would if they had their own minds than otherwise would be possible.

An example. I like to have Morrigan run and flank a stream of enemies running toward Alistair and freeze them with cone of cold without freezing Alistair and any other melee friendlies.  I can do that in Dragon Age.  And no doubt if Dragon Age were really happening and Morrigan was a competent mage, Morrigan could do it too.

But if combat were too Warden-centric that would be harder to pull off and, on the whole, would make for less realistic combat.

I'm thrilled by this news, too. Another reason to be glad I'm a PC gamer!

Better combat on the console but the same on PC? Excellent! Especially as I'm planning on getting it on both console & PC.

EDIT: Symbol showing us HOW the dialogue is going to be said? Oh thank the Maker! This is exactly what we needed. But c'mon does anybody actually like the conversation wheel? It's apalling and Bioware need to stop using it.

We know little about combat on console to qualify it as "better".
If it means less tactics and more hack and slash, then it's not better for me.

It is easy to make the console combat better than DA:O, where you have like 6 quickslot for your mage.

Very good news! The "more dynamic combat" line from the initial announcement had me a bit worried... I'm glad that the PC combat won't be changing drastically.

And all you panic-mongers have little to show for your emotional distress.

Why would they scrap a system that they already have? The engine has already been written. I think it would be far cheaper for BioWare to keep what they have and improve upon it.

I welcome this move, BioWare. Day-one purchase for me.

PC combat is OK, but I'm really looking forward how well they can do with the console version.

Given this is Bioware and all, I am glad DA2 PC is staying DAO PC - with its combat.
To me, besides the usual decision-making stuff for the main character and their party...
Dragon Age means the combat will be strategic, party-based, and the extra additional overhead viewpoint stays - like the old BG games and DAO.

Origins had the PC as lead platform but who wants to bet that they will change the lead platform to Xbox 360 for Dragon Age 2?

Considering it seems that there will be rather large differences in combat styles between the PC and console versions, I'm guessing that both will be developed seperately and concurrently. The toolset's on the PC though, so I hope they keep it as the lead platform.
