Dragon Age 2's combat will be largely the same on the PC -- Thank god, and thank you Bioware.

I like that they are changing it but I want it still in the same sense. I dont want it to be real time fighting or whatever way youd say it. Basically not like Fable where you press a button each time to swing your sword. I like the target a guy and then use talents and spells approach, just improved.

Hope the people who scream and shout how choices from DA:O will not be carried over and how Bioware ruined everything can read this and be calmed down now...

I don't like this. I'm playing on PS3 - and I suspect that instead of fixing their design flaws they're going to gimp the game to save time and money.

Considering it seems that there will be rather large differences in combat styles between the PC and console versions, I'm guessing that both will be developed seperately and concurrently. The toolset's on the PC though, so I hope they keep it as the lead platform.

I wonder if they will even release a toolset with Dragon Age 2?

My only concern now is that it is an actiony twitch based engine, with the strategy elements thrown on top for the PC in an unconvincing manner. Kinda like how they tried to make DA:O a more actiony game for the consoles, and it didn't feel 100% right.

Basically, my hope now is that both versions of the game feel 100% right.

This narrative structure sounds very similar to Alpha Protocol.

On the other hand, YAY Kate Mulgrew!

One of my favorite battles in Dragon Age was the one in the Deep Roads with the Legion of Dead when there is a whole bridge full of Darkspawn. The only bad thing was the field of view was really bad, you couldn't see all the far off darkspawn. Hopefully with the new engine tweaks and advancements DA2 will have bigger battles and more storyline depth.

as ps3 guy, i really hope they don't go too far away from DAO combat. it wasn't perfect, but i don't want to lose out on the strategy element.

Guys there are some serious rose-coloured goggles going on here. I liked the combat system, playing as a warrior or rogue was way more interesting than most other RPG's, but the encounter design needed some work.

I liked the quick, but tactical pace, but encounter design needs to be tweaked - there was a serious lack of variation with enemies at times. Sure, fighting the Sloth Demon or Dragon was a bit different, but there was waaaaaayyyy too much mobbing of enemies. More well-thought out enemies that can give you a diverse set of challenges would be welcome.

Also, some balancing needs to be done. I have not played Awakening or any DLC, so this part might have improved, but mages were clearly the strongest in Origins, particularly if you had an Arcane Warrior / Blood Mage specialization. As a rogue, the archery route was MUCH weaker than going dual-wield, in large part because the specializations in DAO were geared towards that kinda build, plus you got nice backstab bonuses. As a warrior, going two-hander was also not as powerful as dual-wield or tanking with sword-and-board.

I got used to the combat on xbox 360, but I wouldn't mind if some of the pc elements, like being able to tell your party members where to stand without having to manually move them, were added. Just because I play on consoles, it doesn't mean that I prefer a dumbed down version of the pc game. If hardware limitations are the issue, then that's another story.

Hmmm... it's tough for me to say this. I loved DA one hundred percent, I loved its narrative complexity, I loved the branching story, and most of all I loved the amount of choice the player was given over the dialogue. In terms of story and player choice, DA is, bar none, the ultimate RPG.

However, I personally didn't enjoy its combat at all on the xbox. It felt like a strategy game with a tacked-on hack-and-slash button to make it feel more like an action RPG. Don't get me wrong, it had its moments. It was just too difficult to be effective without micromanaging your entire party. Personally, I feel that the console versions of DA2 should embrace a more action-oriented system, purely because that kind of system works better on consoles. It's the same with console RTSs, they just don't work as well in the traditional sense. The mechanics of each version of the game should play to their platforms' strengths; if God of War feels better on a console than Baldur's Gate or KOTOR, then so be it.

Actually, I think it'd be easier to do a strategic-RPG if console DA games embraced KB/mouse. :o
That way, they don't have to make TWO different combat systems.

So I guess the worrying articles I've seen could be for the console versions, in which case: hurrah!

i wish... proper keyboard and mouse support would be awesome... I believe they tried a mouse peripheral for UT3 on the PS3, but it didn't sell too well and was a bit crappy anyway. Still, DA wasn't an RPG for the casual player, so it wouldn't have been too much to ask of players to use a mouse and keyboard.
