Does this mean we get ~100 companions and stand in a big square with shields and spears pushing against other dudes in a big square with shields and spears until one side gets tired? I'm all for historical accuracy but I don't think this dog hunts.

Edit: Now that I think about it DA1 didn't even have spears, let alone 1 handed ones, man this game is gonna be sick.

It's merely a metaphor for more brutal and aggressive combat, at least visually as on the PC combat works the same.

Don't forget the main bad guy looking rather like a woman even though he's a man.

Edit: also 300 not 100

If that's the case why didn't they single something out that was... you know... particularly brutal or aggressive. Maybe mongols or something. Although fight like a mongol would imply bows... kinda like spartan implies spears. Maybe gauls, but they kinda lost. But then again so did the spartans... I don't get it.

You've pretty much figured it out.  Dragon Age 3 will introduce innovations in the usage of cavalry and ranged weapons.  And you'll only be allowed to eat bread and olives.

You got a problem with bread and/or olives? I think that would help the RP to the max.

I certainly wouldn't mind being introduced to some spear weapons, it was actually one of the things i missed in DA;O come to think of it

I think "Fight like a Spartan" is just marketing babble to appeal to a large audience. Pretty much every game that involves fighting with a shield and sword you need to "Fight like a Spartan"

Then again it could mean where going to get a set of big green armour and do battle with an evil/religious empire.

Exactly. Bullsh*t marketing talk. Ignore it, it's just an empty phrase.

I have a feeling the combat will be similar to the LOTR games a while ago. Which I don't think is a bad thing.

I'm convinced that this game will be an awesome stat based phalanx simulator. Considering the amount of information available, I think this is the most likely choice.

You can already fight like a Spartan in Origins, just un-equip torso armour.

God dammit! You beat me too the joke. Yes now we shall fight in a very effective Phalanx with an army of Spartan's! It will be utterly tedious to watch as all we will do is stand still and thrust spears! On a serious note, I hope the think like a general line implies we will eventually become generals and manage a long military campaign! Dragon Age 2: Total War anyone?

You mean like bowstrings?

And we actually get to eat something? Awesome.

Isn't it a big spoiler that DA universe is actually our universe in the Greek time?

Pretty much every picture released shows a character holding or carrying a spear or pole weapon. I don't think that's an accident. I can only assume that spears will be in the game. Whether the combat style will resemble a phalanx at all is another matter. I do like the inclusion of spears though: it adds yet another skill tree to climb for warriors.

It's about damn time polearms returned to RPGs. They have been slowly fading in most RPGs as of late, and it's quite frankly annoying. Regardless of how awkward polearms look, they were some of the most effective weapons in the Middle Ages, and they deserve to be in every Fantasy RPG for that reason.

Spoiler: After the Blight, all conventional weapons were banned. A new weapon was introduced quickly: the spear. This is now the only weapon that is used in Thedas.

No, it's a reference to Kratos which means they wanna pull off a God of War. Problem is, only God of War can be real god of war with dynamic combat and such. And Dragon Age better stay Dragon Age, an RPG. DA2 can make a good Dragon Age game, but it'll be a horrible God of War.
