Maybe they should have done it the other way round. Call the region Hawke, and the guy Kirk.

My only problem with "Kirkwall" is that, if I'm not mistaken, Kirk = Church... yet Thedas doesn't have churches; it has chantries. Of course, that's just me nitpicking. It's a fine name.
What if "kirk" equals "church" equals "chantry"? Problem solved!
I'm French so I guess that if the game was set in Orlais I'd be running into the same sort of "problem" with place names. If Bioware is aiming for a Scottish atmosphere for the Free Marches then it will be awesome! Scotland is a fantastic place!

Really? I find that hard to believe.
Hawke "So here I am in Kirkwall, whats a man got to do to become champion round here?"
Villager "Well we got an army of Darkspawn ready to breach the north wall, you could deal with that however there is also a few other matters you could take care of"
Hawke "Like what"
Villager "Well our king is dying so I suppose you could go on a dangerous quest to find the cure or there is also the Jade Monkey Dragon that keeps harrasing our village and needs delt with, take your pick"

We'll see. I doubt it will be as lame as that.

I got it, we rename it to Kirkland so then that way in Dragon Age 2, Hawke is the Champion of Costco!

I am just finding it hard to believe that we will be able to choose what makes us the Champion of Kirkwall, to me it just seems like (and probably is) Game Informer talking it up to be more than it is.

It shows a total lack of imagination on the part of bioware, may as well call Hawke champion of Dallas or Seattle.
That's assuming anyone at Bio knew there was a real Kirkwall. I didn't know that until I read this thread. It sounded like a place name that might be real, if the local language was English.
This. I had no idea either.
My first thoughts on the name were simple: I'm just glad it wasn't Spockwall or McCoywall.

We don't deliberately pick names off a map, if that's what you're suggesting. Sometimes the names we come up with happen to coincide with an existing place-- really, when you're making stuff like this up it's bound to happen from time to time, and I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often than it does.Gegenlicht wrote...
Pretty certain they picked a lot of the names from real maps or travel guides or whatever. The Anderfels contain names of a number of existing German towns and cities for example, Rialto, the capital of wherever Zevran's from again, is a city quarter of Venice and so on.
Edit:
And mostly all of Thedas is inspired by the real world. Orlais is France, Ferelden is England, the Anderfels is Germany and so on. Hell, the history of the Elves bears striking resemblances to the history the Jewish people to some extent. Driven from their homeland, roaming the earth, ghettoized and generally treated as second class people.
As it is there's nothing to associate Kirkwall of the Far Reaches with the Scottish town beyond them sharing the name.

in these times it is hard to come up with new things right? Most of the time you come up with a name you realize it later something else is already called that, just like Batman.

I think your thinking to much of Krikwall. They probably did make it up. There just happened to be a town named Kirkwall.
Well how bout that David proved me right.
