Hello
Just started plaing MS1 and discovered the audio problems whereby no 5.1 sound. I've search and found various solutions for sound blaster cards, but no solutions for my onboard Realtek HD.
Is 5.1 possible with Realtek HD please and if so how?
Thank you

It's not possible. I did a lot of research and tried many workarounds before I decided it's pointless and then I bought a Sound Blaster. Demiurge did not optimize the PC version for onboard audio.
After I got a Sound Blaster (a cheap X-Fi Xtreme Audio) I got surround and EAX, which enhances the audio quality dramatically. With onboard audio all dialogue sounds like it does in a recording studio. If you have a Sound Blaster with EAX the audio changes depending on your surroundings. For instance, there's a big echo in the Citadel Tower where you first meet the council.
BioWare knew in advance that the sequel would also come out on PC so all environmental effects are in place without the need of EAX. So if you have Realtek HD ME2 sounds better than ME1 but if you have a SoundBlaster it's the other way around.
