a fully voiced pc is:

1) expensive

it has been stated many times that full voice would have been too expensive for DA:O. Now that they are doing it in DA2 something has to give.

- Using existing engine, while still improving it could free up some of the budget
- First known Knife cut are the origins (they were cut most likely for several reasons but do not doubt that this played a role)

- a voiced pc ( for a game similar to DA or ME) is likely to increase voicework in the range of 40-50% [note that would give pc around 30% of the new total voicework which i'd say is even a conservative estimate]. PC is involved in nearly all dialogues and has usually several choices.

--- how to reduce this new cost furthers? less dialogue options and less gametime then in  DA:O

2) time intensive

VO is neither simple nor quickly done, and the amount of VO work you can do will be also limited by the development timeof the product, which for DA2 seems to be similar /shorter then ME2

--- It is hard to compare but nonetheless i think it is sensible not to expect more dialogue in DA2 then we have seen in ME2

These reasonings are not perfect but give me sufficient worry to think that DA2 will be substantially shorter than DA:O.  I think its highly likely that in gamelength it will be more comparable to ME2 then to DA:O.

The main reason why VO would have been too expensive for DA:O was that the protagonist could be any of three races of both sexes each. However, I agree that it may lower the amount of dialogue that can be written and recorded on budget... I just hope it doesn't.

I think you're worrying about nothing.

It will be shorter, t'is inevitable.

Not only are they doing voicework for the PC but they're also making it a more cinematic experience which means more time spent in each part of the game making it look flashy.

It will be shorter just by necessity yes. How much shorter remains to be seen.

Oh, well... Maybe it's not enough for everyone, but I've already 164 hours played on ME2 alone and I am still enjoying it.

Dragon Age: Origins is stuck at 151, after which I couldn't bring myself to go back anymore.

Given what the devs said about why DA:O wasn't voiced, yes. It will be shorter. And given what was also said about looking for ways to decrease the cost of voice acting, there will probably have less dialogue. Style/cost has won out over substance.

But guys, let's think in terms of quality over quantity. If the look and experience of the game improves, I can deal with it being a little shorter. Was it awesome that DA:O was so long? Yes, but it definitely dragged at places during replays (think of the Fade sections and certain portions of the Deep Roads, for instance).

Plus, DA:O had a massive amount of dialogue, even if none of it came from the PC. If you manage the amount of dialogue supporting characters have (or even the number of NPCs) then you might not have to cut down on the time at all.

Of course, this is just speculation. I have no idea how expensive/time consuming it is to voice work, so I'm mostly pulling this out of the air.

Why should it be shorter?

Since DA:O has sold very well, I imagine that DA2 will have a larger budget, so that they can do the VO without butchering other parts of the game.

Hopefully they have a big enough budget to be able to add it without compromising too much.

Hah, if only that kind of tech existed. Maybe in a decade or so...
