If you have, its probably because of my avatar.

But if I was a woman and had a hot pocket rather than a hot dog, you'd assume I'd be "LPPrincess", no?

Thoughts?  Am I missing another development related reason for restricting race selection this time around, other than not wanting to create separate origins?  I can see easy ways to place an elf or a dwarf in Lothering during the Blight...after all, we do meet Bodahn and Sandal there, and an elven family...so why not our character?

Does there have to be an ulterior motivation behind it?

This is the story we wanted to tell, of this one particular human.

yes well, the problem being that unless a miracle happens you didn't do a particularly good job at ending the first story, and THAT is the major reason why so many people reacts with negative input.

If you asked me the first game ends with slaying the arch demon, and the guy from awakening is an orlesian grey warden. Especially now that I know that I cannot keep my GW in DA2 it seems silly to pass up at the chance to kill the Archdemon myself, and Morrigan's ritual was also more tempting when I thought I could live to see what comes from it.

I for one am glad to see we are playing 1 origin in DA2 instead of 6. This mean this origin can be richer and deeper because NPC interactions are not diluted with so many origins.

Also I hope the main char is fully voice acted, games such as Mass Effect, Witcher, Risen had given more personality to the main character as oppose to the mute in classic CRPG games. I mean the lines we 'select' in DAO are already pre-written dialogues, having the lines read out loud can convey the tone of the dialogues even more.

Do you realize that coming into threads that are not even criticizing, but questioning and speculating about the choices made for DA2, and accusing everyone who expresses doubts or worries of being "whiners" and "haters" isn't exactly raising the level of discourse?

Accusations usually revolve around opinions.

Its not my opinion.

I'm indifferent. I loved Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Dragon Age Origins, but I'm not going to just shower DA2 in praise until I see, keyword "SEE" how its going to look and play.

Anyone that's up in arms from the little they've heard is overreacting something hardcore.

People are being unnecessarily harsh from both points of view, right now, but I'm just trying not to engage in arguments that can't be settled until the game comes out, and a consensus is reached.  Even then, people will probably have very widely different opinions on how the game did.

Personally, I just wanted to wildly speculate about reasons why Hawke could only be human.  As I said, I wanted to be the plain ole' human commoner in DA:O, and I usually play humans in games as my "canon" characters.  I do wish that we had more choice, and I worry that this will cut down on replayability, but we'll see.

In the meantime, I'm going to create wild theories that there's another, darker reason why Hawke has to be human, despite what Mr. Gaider said.  Hawke is *obviously* going to be yet another illegitimate child of Maric's, and the Old God soul passed through Morrigan and settled in Hawke.  Obviously!!!

Yep. Awakenings clearly messed with the proper ending, so playing it as an Orlesian Warden makes much more sense.

Yes YOUR story, this is why most of us dont like the sound of Dragon age 2, and why so many of us are disapointed.

Hate to break it to you, but DAO was a story we wanted to tell, as well.

If you wish to refuse to admit the possibility that the next chapter may draw you in just like the first one did, that's up to you. I guess you will eventually see for yourselves. :)

Well said, i don't really mind that i can only be human, i am slightly worried about the dialogue, i mean, i found the wheel in Mass effect 1 and 2 to work fine, but i got dragon age after i played those, and i actually like this one more, but it really isn't a big deal.

Also, from what i've read, PC combat is relatively unchanged, with the consoles having theirs tweaked, which IMO is good.

my only worry is that the wheel will have un wanted consequences, for the most part it was fine in Mass Effect 2, but i didn't like the few times when i thought i was going the peaceful route, only to punch someone in the face or throw them off a building (well, that was cool though)

Difference was: Not the same game series.

You can't make a game set in the middle east and then in italy..

wait, that's Assassin's Creed.

You know what I mean!

Human. Common. Most likely to be accepted in most parts of the world when becoming a hero. No problems with that.

A bit off topic but:
Guys, just wait and see, mark my words half of you that are flaming this game will crawl back and play it when it comes out eventually. Or maybe crawl back after a trailer is released  :wizard:
The point is simple, you judge too quickly. I know people are worried but it's not like they were making a game and suddenly someone stole them from it and ruined it.
Bioware owns DA that means what ever they want to do, they will do with their game, you like it or not. Of course, they can be GOOD  and read forums/ listen to feedback etc, and reflect upon your thoughts and wishes, but we must be supportive, not flaming. Ultimately they will choose to do what they want,  as Gaider said. You like it or not.

so the only problem is they dared to call the game Dragon Age 2 instead of "Merry Tales of the Hawke, Hero of K." ... thats all?

You know that "Dragon Age" refers to a CENTURY (100 years + - ) ... in a speicifc continent ... with its lore ... so if the game is located in that age, with same lore there is no reason to not call it Dragon Age X ... ;-)

Planescape: Torment had no relation to Baldur's Gate though, heck BioWare didn't even have anything to do with it aside from the licensing of the engine to Black Isle. I never posted on or even visited the Black Isle boards in the era of the Infinity Engine games, but I doubt that there was that much of an outcry since Torment was Torment and Baldur's Gate was Baldur's Gate.

i'm not sure if it have been brought up yet but i think that hawke has to be a human has got something to do with the fact that he should be "one of the most important persons of dragon age". as far as i know the story "dragon age" is already written, meaning that the storywriters already designed it. following to that we'll propably play a person who will be refered to in DA3, 4 or other. So he'll have to do some special actions to BECOME the guy we'll read about in a codex later. that can make it necessary for him to be human, for example an elve could have a hard time becoming king of the free marches ("ultimate rise to power") or something like that. so if you still want to implement facts that made DA1 so special (like the racism towards elfs) your race HAS to be predefined.

There's still plenty of time for Bioware to decide to rename the game to Dragon Age: Rise to Power or something.

NWN2 had nothing to do with NWN, apart from a bit of it taking place in Neverwinter. Frankly, KoTor2 could probably have got away without mentioning Revan at all, and just been a perfectly fine standalone game with a dubious ending.

I'd guess that calling it Dragon Age: Flight of the Hawke or some such crap would make some people think it was an expansion rather than a full game (I know there are STILL people asking whether Fallout:New Vegas is a full game or just some DLC) . DA2 just makes it easier. Though more contentious, it seems!
