The names of the Free marches city-states sound germanic so it makes sense that they would resemble the squabbling baronys, etc of early medieval germany.

hmmmmmm idk germany feels much like tevinter and well at last Kirkwall doesn't sound like it was from germany after all. greece could be much more like it.

Anderfels is the in-game equivalent to Germany.
Anderfels - Germany
Orlais - France (Obviously)
Antiva - Italy (Specifically Venice I think)
Free Marches - Ancient Greece (I think because it has a bunch of city states)
Seheron and Par Vollen - North African Moorish territory
Rivain - Spain (The Northern tip is converted to the Qun, the possible real life equivalent to the Quaran and the Moslim faith)
Tevinter - The Holy Roman Empire area (Charlemagnes territory, the king who conquered almost all of Western Europe and Latinized the languages)
Ferelden - Great Britain and Scotland, with the Korcari Wilds as the untamed frozen wasteland that is similar to Scandinavia, where the Vikings (A.K.A. Chasind) come from)
This is how I see it anyways, not sure if it is true

Dunno about the bold, not seeing too many similarities, besides the Qunari resembling the Ottomans besieging the Byzantinians.

Perhaps an option to change sides and help the Darkspawn, in that case? I'd quite happily chase Boris Johnson around with a sword

"I say Timothy, there appear to be some darkspawn outside"
"How ghastly Jeremy. Wait, are you sure they aren't those poor people."
"What's the difference?"
Both: "Haw haw haw haw"

Aye, it'd be a problem if Sean Bean voiced Hawke: "Help those southern [Free Marchian] nancies? Not fooking likely"

College of Magi? And here I thought all the education was down in the tower.

There has to be somewhere where the senior enchanters lay down the ground rules for the circles.

I always thought there where more then one Circle in each country.
And if the Senior Encharters of each Circle meet somewhere to lay down the rules,I think it would be somewhere else.
Like where the Chantry has more power, because I heard that in some parts in Thedas they don't believe in the Maker.
The Dalish and Qunari are obvious, but there must be others.

I would think that either the Orlesian Circle Tower, the Circle of Minrathous in Tevinter, or the College in Cumberland is the head of the circle. Orlais is the head of the Andrastian Chantry, giving it the most direct power over the circle, the Tevinter Circle follows the Imperial Chantry, but it also has the most advanced magicks.
The Dalish who roam Thedas everywhere besides Rivain belive in the Creators and give respect to Andraste. The Rivaini have a permanent Dalish encampment on the outskirts of their country who possibly follow the Qun (like the Rivaini on the northern coast) or they believe in the creators as the other Dalish do. Rivaini natives don't believe in the Maker or the Qun or the creators except for the groups I mentioned as far as I know

Cumberland could also be a place where mages from the Andrestian and Imperial Chantry meet to discuss certain things, you know like some kind of neutral ground. But still what Chantry do they follow Nevarra is close to both Tevinter and Orlais.Or is it a school for mages without intervention from Chantry law and it's templars? Wait that's still closer to the Imperial Chantry's point of view...

I always thought that the College in Cumberland is 'Mage Central', where all enchanters go to discuss things of importance.

Well it is described in the Codex as the golden glittering Colege of Magi.
I doubt it was only build for the Nevarren Mages, it must surve some other important purposes, why else would they make it of gold?

I checked the Dragon Age wiki and it says that the Qunari are based off the Mayans(well, at least the architecture), Vikings, and Seljuk/Ottomon Turks. Don't forget that we know very little about the Qunari as it is so they may be based off a variety of cultures.

Diffrent question for you guys.

They say Hawke will be the Champion of Kirkwall but the story will also take place in diffrent places.

Does this mean diffrent places in the Free Marches, or diffrent countrys like Antiva or Rivia.

Sorry if i'm being vague.

I have to agree that Cumberland is a sort of neutral ground where all mages go to discuss global mage issues. Maybe it has no the Templars have a massive authority reduction in the college. Like they cannot order mages or restrict their magical use, but if they do become abominations they are permitted to slay it. Just a thought

Mmm... could be that there are no Templars, but still if it is a neutral ground for Mage's to meet and share information or new spells, someone has to keep control.
Like I mentioned before Nevarre is close to both Tevinter who has the Imperial Chantry, and Orlais who practicly brought the Andrestian Chantry this far. And since both Mage groups have diffrent viewpoints on things (The Imperial Chantry gives Mages more freedom and the Andrestian doesn't, and a lot of Mages from Ferelden and Orlais agree with that) there could be some heated debates or even fights breaking out.
And you don't want Mage's fighting each other, they fight fire with fire quite literaly.

well imo well see much new enemies. reason is, that at least after 3-4 years the darkspawn are rare at the surface, and always fightening bandits is boring. but im sure well encounter many humans, for the story seems to have a focus on politics. besides well see dragons. and propably qunari.

Yes I am wondering about this Chantry Seeker Cassandra, and if they (the Seekers) will be Hawke's enemys, and how will they fight? Like Templars?

hmmmm i dont think that there are many seekers, so i dont think well fight much. i think the most awesome thing would be if they fought like caladrius or something (y know that bloodmage slave trader). i mean, servants of the chantry using blood magic... how awesome would that be??^^

Blood Magic? That would be weird... Maybe they use some special skill to kill Blood Mages, like a more advanced Templar skill?

Nevarra is a separate place-- a nation that lies to the west of the Free Marches, between it and Orlais. The College of the Magi is in a city named Cumberland, in Nevarra.

Kirkwall is one of the Free Marches city-states that lies directly to the north of Ferelden, across the Waking Sea. It has an interesting background, which I'm sure we'll get into in more detail in the months to come.

Dear Mr. David Gaider,

Wynne told us about a meeting in the College...
Is the meeting convened by libertarians finishd? What has been decided?

Nevarra, home of the Nevarran Dragon Hunters, and also one of the most magnificent countries in Thedas, from what is said in the codex. I am excited about the possibility to visit the necropolis of Nevarra City, as well as Nevarra's College of Magi in Cumberland. I'm hoping to see a nation ruled by great warriors, bound by honor, and have a glorious military history. Honor and camaraderie have always been two of my favorite traits in a warrior.
It is said that Nevarra was once a larger city state of the Free Marches, but aggresivley expanded, and now has power to rival that of Orlais. The Pentaghast clan who is renown for their dragon hunter heros is particularly intriguing, I hope we have the chance to speak with one of them. So much history to learn, and yet the release of DA2 is so many months away, all this suspense it's getting me pumped!

I've been facinated by Nevarra ever since I donned the Blood Dragon Armor and read about its history, and after reading the Nevarra codex I was glad to see just how magnificent the nation is, decorated with statues of heros and breathtaking architecture. I hope we get the chance to travel to and explore this proud nation.

Thanks Bioware.Posted Image

So what do you think Hawke will do in Kirkwall?

In the 'Thedas Timeline' Game Informer posted it says the city is practicly ruled by Templars.

I personally think Hawke will get rid of the Templars reclaiming the rule for Kirkwall's Viscount and thus gaining the title of Champion of Kirkwall, the only problem I have with my own theory is that it might start an Exalted March against the Free Marches.

I've always viewed Templars as good guys with a difficult duty that many view as extreme, but in reality the Templars are doing a good deed by ridding the world of the evil that is malificarum. That said, I doubt a rebellion against the Templars will be the basis for Hawke's rise to power.

Yes, but these Templars have killed the former Viscount of Kirkwall and now rule it behind the scenes and they rule Kirkwalls Circle of Magi with an iron fist, and since Hawke's sister Bethany is a Mage (Apostate or on the run from Ferelden's Circle of Magi) there is a change that she gets caught or whatever what leads to Hawke freeing her.
And in doing this he might start a civil war in Kirkwall between him and the Mages against the Templars.

Well, this could be I mean the Qunari, the Tevinter Imperium and Orlais have all tried to make the Free Marches their own, and if one man/women starts a rebellion and unites the Free Marches making it one country... Then I guess you become a pretty important person in Thedas's history.
