EA Support has not contacted me and it's been over 3 days and no one on this board of any importance has responded to my call for help. I've had a lot of help from the forum users, some of which share my grief but there suggestions can only go so far.

Once again like Mass Effect for the PC, this crappy installer EA/Bioware insists on using crashes part way through with data errors. I will say this again there is nothing wrong with my PC. I can play a bunch of other games problem free. Why can't you guys use an installer like the ones on Steam or Direct2Drive. I have no idea why the installer keeps crashing, why using an external unzip program it reports corrupted files. I have tried using the store bought DVD and the digital download files from the EA Store but no luck.

So far this is 60$ down the drain. I wasted an entire weekend trying to get this game to install. If you think I'm whining I have a right to. Ever since Bioware joined, merged, was absorbed by EA I have had severe problems either getting your games to install or play without crashing. It's ironic that I finally got Mass Effect to install and work but all that credit goes to Steam. They had the game on sale for half price so I took a chance for $10 after all I was never able to get my $40 DVD version of the game to work. I credit the version on Steam working because they obviously used a different installation method.  Too bad I cannot take this game back for a full refund and re-purchase it off of Steam. I'll bet apples to oranges that version of the game would install and play with no problems.

So now I'm forced to wait for EA Supports response but I hold as much hope they will fix this problem as I do for world peace.

Now I'm probably going to get some negative feedback for this rant but I have a right to be angry if I can't play this game.

all I can guess is, you have an issue with SecureROM (specifically the newer versions BioWare and EA both favor now). Those wouldn't be present in Steam (and is not present in Direct2Drive either). It's not really a change since EA merged, BioWare has always used SecureROM, they've just started using the newer (and more invasive) versions since MEPC.

No. From what I hear it is an EA issue.

If it is due to copy protection that is sad, most cases pirates just laugh at it and find a way to circumvent. The real impact is felt by the suckers who pay money and actually support this industry.

I wonder if you can get a patch for Securom?

you might check their website... I believe they do have those from time to time... another thing you might try is making an image of the disc and mounting it from the hard drive as a "virtual disc" sometimes that will help... on a troubleshooting note, what kind of DVD drive are you using?

Finally got the game working only on a different platform, my X360 console. Even on the console this is still a fantastic game, the combat is less tactical since you can't zoom out but they still did a great job. Game looks and sounds great on my 40" LCD 5.1 surround system in my living room. The new interface takes some getting used to but the major factor is I'm able to play the game and really enjoying the entire experience. There is no one better than Bioware for crafting amazing RPG character driven story games. Dragon Age is like playing through a Lord of the Rings movie, it's that good.

Not holding my breath over a magic fix patch, a year later I'm still not able to install/play my disk version of Mass Effect. When I bought the game on Steam last weekend for $10 the game installed and plays perfectly fine. It's gotta be something to do with the copy protection EA/Bioware is using and something about it doesn't agree with my system.

Carleg1, I tried a similar way that you used but I still got corrupted file errors during the WinRAR extraction. Got the game to install but it basically a broken version, missing textures, missing animations and constant crashing after the prologue story ended.

NW2 and Spore were unplayable for me as well due to crashing. This game is mostly playable. Still some crashes though.

Wouldn't know about any crashing problems, still can't install the game. I don't know whether to laugh or cry at this point. EA Support, the absolute worst in the business. All this time, several ticket updates for my Dragon Age problems and still not a single response.

I was having the exact same problem as you. Couldn't install and none of the methods posted worked at all. However, I finally managed to make it work, thanks to Wozearly.

It is possible to manually circumvent this, as I had to in order to get the game installed. ;)

If you're doing it from the DVD, you'll need to first copy everything onto your hard drive - once done, make copies of your textures.rar, core.rar and any other .rar files bugging out.

Then go into the originals and delete every file that's over 150mb or so (and any other files that are causing problems). The installer should then run fine. Once its done, go to the copies of the .rar files and manually extract the files you deleted using 7zip, or any other program that will extract files from .rar even if it detects CRC errors.

Then just put these in the game directory in the path indicated in the RAR file. Once done, the game should run absolutely fine.

Please bear in mind that this isn't an official solution - just one that I got to work. I can't promise that it won't break the game at some later stage, but you will at least be able to play it. ;)

http://social.biowar...want to try it. Is the link to the page.

I only had a few files that I had to delete and then I just installed them myself after and so far everything is working. I'm not sure if I'll have problems later on.. but atleast I can play for the moment. Let me know if you need a better explanation and Ill try to help out more. I know how annoying it is to not be able to play, so I hope this helps out.

Chanyi - glad it worked for you.

As a favour, when you get to the stage where you travel to Lothering, I'd be grateful to know if you also suffer difficulties with loading into the zone. I'm currently suffering from that, and it'd be handy to see if it seems to be a side-effect of the manual installation or if its just another random bug that I've encountered.

It'll also help with narrowing down what's causing it, which makes it easier to determine how to fix it, which will help me and anyone else suffering from the same glitch. ;)

I've messaged this to you as well, as its freaking hard to find posts with the search form being so screwy.

I haven't had any errors with Lothering, the only thing I can think of it being is if you missed installing a file that you had deleted. I forgot to self install one and the scree was constantly black. So I think the only choice is to go through all the files and see if any are missing. Also I only had a problem with a few files and CRC errors, so it took me about 20 times extracting the same file but eventually I extracted it without and errors. So that might also be your problem.

Just let me know if this doesn't explain it very well, kinda in a hurry. Just send me another message and I'll try and clear it up better in the morning.

OMG THANK YOU! This is ridiculous. The only piece of S***, I mean, software, that I have not been able to install on this machine ever. I'm very relieved to find out it is not just me. Thank you all for the help trying to figure out how to fix this horrific problem. Maybe I'm being thick about this but why aren't there any Bioware folks answering this forum to help figure this stuff out? I mean, REALLY? The flipping game is not installing. I would think this is something they would perceive as a problem. I have a Dell XPS 600. There are probably LOTS of this machine out there. It's not like I'm using some stupid Frankenclone I pieced together myself. Yeesh. Well, I've just begun the process of copying everything to my hard drive.

Hey Bioware. How about you reduce the amount of money I spent on the game by the amount of money I make an hour * the amount of time I spent trying to get this game to load? At this point, you already owe me. Okay, so how about instead of that YOU ACTUALLY READ THE FORUMS ***YOU*** HAVE ON YOUR OWN WEBSITE.

I am going to return this game tomorrow and ask for a different box. Maybe it's the DVD?

/rant off

Thank you, fellow users, for the help. Hope it works for me. (note - can't copy the files over - yet another data error)Posted Image

When I had problems installing the DVD version of Mass Effect, I got several forum replys and emails from actual Bioware Staff, but with this game not a peep out of anyone responsible for the games development.

Since the game first came out I still have not gotten a single reply to my support ticket I sent to EA.

I got it to install. I borrowed a friend's external DVD player and the game installed flawlessly. Not sure what caused the issue, but after looking through this forum, this game seems to have L..O..A..D..S of issues. Now my only hope is that the game will be smart enough to check MY drives for the DVD check before playing, and that my drives are capable of providing the necessary compatibility or I may have to buy my friend's DVD player from him in order to play this game. Sheesh. I'd love to see the hardware and software configurations used for compatibility testing for this game before release. Please tell me the same guy who decided it was okay not to test Stool of Radiance isn't running the QC for this game. :P

I found the solution, purchase the game off of STEAM that way you don't have to deal with EA's crappy installer which has been the root of all my problems. I think more specifically it's the copy protection EA uses. Steam doesn't use any, just a CD code and you have to be logged into your Steam account while you play. The game installed perfectly and so far no problems while running it. For those interested Steam is offering the game for $39.99 till the end of the month.

You could have tried just copying the data from the disc to the hard drive to see if you get any crc errors. If so either the disc is broken or your DVD drive is, try it on another computer/drive then return it if it is broken.

It is quite possible the DVD drive might be dirty, or the laser is a bit buggered as it's happened to two different games.

I also tried the EA downloader to get the digital version, that did not install either so that eliminates a bad disk or DVD drive as the problem don't you think.
