It is an old-style party based RPG based on 2nd edition D&D rules.

The chances of any game store having it are pretty damned slim.

Your laptop can run it...hell, an old brick with an ipod screen taped to it can run it, the game came out twelve years ago.

Its now an old rpg series (BG2 was much better imo, one of the best games ever made)...

If you can cope with old gfx (though they can be improved upon with various teaks and fixes) then you wont be disappointed.

I have no idea how old you are, but most 'gamers' under the age of 25 would never play it is it aint FLASHY enough for them,.......

If your open minded and a serius gamer/lover of good storylines etc, then you wont regret getting them both (and the expansions)

For thre record, currently replaying BG myself at the moment :)

If you look on Amazon.com (or any decent game store in your country, I assume you're American because of Gamestop), it should be on there in a 4-in-1 pack with its expansion, BG2+Exp.

You can find your computer specs in a few ways, one of which is by running "dxdiag" from the Run command, you can use a utility such as Belarc Advisor or, perhaps more simply, use this website to determine if your computer can run a certain game. I doubt that website has every game released, but is still a very useful tool.

I suggest just popping that up.

look for Dragon Age: Origins in the list and it will tell you if your computer could run it or not and give you an assessment as to why or why not

I'd guess your Vista Laptop is a dual core? And most new laptops/computers now have fairly decent videocards, so yes, you should be able to run it.

There's mod called easy tutu that let you play Baldur's Gate (the first one) in the BG2 engine, looks better and there's a few other nice changes, too - e.g. you can now stack items etc.

According to http://www.rpgwatch.com/#15283 there will be a talk about BG2 at GDC Europe

http://schedule.gdceurope.com/ in which some important people will be discussing how it was to made BG2 10 years ago. BG1 is from 1997 or 1998 (I think?) - so yes, it is fairly old. And uses a tactical system that is (A)DnD.

I do think that laptop can play Dragon Age, probably 2 MB would be better - it all really depends on the videocard here, I think...if you were to play Dragon Age on your Vista Laptop...

Ok :) I think I may stick to older titles... they seem to be able to run easier

Is it possible to play BG II instead of BGI? II sounds cooler...from what I could see off of youtube....

and it had voice acting? Even being that old?

It had sporadic voice acting. Lines are usually spoken in important scenes. Otherwise you might hear the first line of a conversation spoken and need to read the rest.

I seriously recommend the 4-1 box set. If you do happen to find the old boxed ones at a gamestop, I think they might have more of a problem running becaues they are not patched(?). Also the 4-1 has both games and the exansions, it's on DVD's so you don't have to carry around 10+ discs and if I remember correctly, it installed and ran fine on Vista. Also, if you get it, you should research the "Easytutu" mod(a goodle search will bring it up) and install, it will make BG1 much more enjoyable.

I seriously recommend the games though, if you love western rpg's, it doesn't get much better than the Baldur's Gate series. Keep in mind that the game is not easy, in comparison to recent games, it's very difficult and unforgiving.

Pretty much this. It's also similar to DA:O/NWN in that your PC really only ever speaks during combat, and they don't have any spoken lines of dialogue. From what I remember, anyway.

As for the computer, yes, it'll run fine. Once you know what you're looking for and how to analyse it, it's a walk in the park. For the basics, all you really need to remember is that 1000MHz = 1GHz, ~1024MB = 1GB (your specs said 1022, so I assume it has a 1GB RAM module or 2x512) and that Intel graphics are almost always worse than ATi/nVidia ones. Oh, and with multicore CPUs, you don't add the core speeds up (so a dual core at 2GHz isn't the same as 4GHz, as an example).

Yes, absolutely!

I know many people like the first game in the series, but many others - like me - didn't much care for it. In fact, I didnt' finish it when I first bought it, and because of it, delayed getting BG2 until I spotted it in a bargain bin.

And was I ever wrong in pre-judging a game based on an earlier instalment of the series!

BG2 is way, way better, IMHO, and corrects pretty much all the flaws that made me dislike BG1. And you really don't need to have played BG1 to get into BG2 - everything you need to know is given to you in dialogue, and the story stands on it's own.

Although, both the games are often sold in one package, nowadays.

I would very strongly recommend getting BG2, and it's expansion Throne of Bhaal. They really make up what is a truly outstanding RPG experience.

Great advice in this thread. Baldur's Gate is old but has aged rather well and there are many mods around (I second the suggestion of using Easy Tutu).

If you don't mind the graphics you're in for a treat.

Check out the intro movie, it will give you an idea of the tone of the game:
