It is very convenient.

Especially considering that the first thing they should've noticed upon studying even the smallest piece of Sovereign's wreckage is that he is composed of both synthetic and organic matter.

Which would place him in the distinctly not geth column.

What they are trying to do is prevent a panic. If it got out there is a powerful ememy coming to destroy our entire way of life and we are almost powerless to do anything about it it would create chaos.

What they did was they scapegoated the Geth. An Enemy we know that we can defeat. The stopped the panic and then did the good political spin thing but saying the "Hero of the Citadel" is chasing the Geth out of our space and destroying those that don't leave.

They know it wasn't the Geth but they don't know what to do and are afraid.

Do share your scrying device.

Cuz the turian Councilor's air quotes just screamed, "I totally believe you but I don't want to start a panic."  :P

I can understand not create panic but not do any steps against them and telling that Shepard has mental problems beliving in Reapers is just retarded.

Besides it wouldn't be first time for them to be incredibly stupid.

Well that is because he is a jerk, a very clever jerk, but still. And since Shepard have been a smartass when talking to the Council before s/he shouldn't be suprised that the turian councilour answers back with the same thing. Showing up in a Cerberus frigatte isn't very good for your credibility.
Whatever we may think about the Councilours actions and behaviour I think it's far fetched to call them stupid. Arrogant and conservative to an extent, yes, but they are good at reading the public opinion. And what the people of the galaxy wants is certanly not a huge fleet of robot Chtulus eating everyone. Evidence is needed and Shepards dreams and brief conversations with Sovereign and Saren isn't enough.
And they will always cover their own behinds. Getting them to a trial would be hard.

For me it's the first time.

I was frustrated with them in ME1, but I understood. We were the new kids on the block and Saren was an extremely respected Spectre. We were hotheaded and brash and gave them no real cause to take us seriously.

I also understood their continuing doubt about the existence of the Reapers. I mean that's a pretty big thing to wrap your head around. But I thought the attack on the Citadel had finally proven it to them. To have them turn around and say the Reapers don't exist again - that's stupid, to me.

Still could have thought Saren found the ship somewhere. No one has any experience with an entirely sentient ship. Without all the background info that Sheppard has (Which he can't prove), the most obvious explanation (to the council) is that Saren got his hands on an advanced  derelict ship but he was in charge. That Saren figured out how to control the geth somehow because they are seen following him.

Yeah that turnaround was a bit too sudden and convenient. Wich is why I think they know more than they admit. Such sensitive information is nothing you can share with Cerberus lackeys like Shepard of course.

Why Council suck and should be abolished.

ME1-ME2

Refusing to believe in existence of Reapers and take steps against them despite all evidence

Letting racist policies on Citadel( not hiring bla... Quarians, Joram anti-human campaign...)

Let Geth massacre human colonies

Before ME started

Incompetent against Rachni, needed primitive species Krogans

Let Krogans extinct Rachni( help #1 for Saren)

Incompetent against Krogans, needed Genophage to stop them( help #2 for Saren)

Not help Quarians against Geth and let billions to die( help #3 for Saren)

Scared from Terminus System even though newcomer human Alliance fleet completely annihilate them at Skylian Blitz with no or low casualty( except at land).( help #4 for Saren)

This is why I regret saving the council on my male paragon playthrough.
They are nothing but bunch of blind stubborn morons.

My Shepard was never a jerk or a smartass to the Council.

And their error is that they place public opinion over public defense.

If for nothing else the Council can be put on trial what they do with the Krogans. Not only the genophage, but the whole picture. Lifting the Krogans up jsut to have an army against the Rachni (and as Mordin explains, this step was a bad step even with the Rachni threat in consideration) then after the war when the Krogan expanded (as a consequence of the uplifting action) punish them with genophage. These shows that the Asari, Salarian and Turian Council is completelly ruthless and incompetent in the same place.

I have renegade, renegon ME1&ME2 playthru where I saved the Council, hoping that later I could face them to their sins and horrible mistakes. That would be very satisfying.

No matter what they thought, Sovereign was obviously a piece of very dangerous and advanced technology whose existence and origins warrant investigation.

Neither was mine actualy, clumsily of me to write before I thought. My misstake.

If it's against public opinion there is not much a ruler can do. These are not the dictators of the galaxy, without support from other powerfull organisations they are rather powerless. If they would warn about a reaper threat now the media would laugh at them and the military and finance would withdraw their support for creating panic without providing proof. They would be replaced with councilours that doesn't have reapers on their agenda at all wich would only make it worse. At the moment the Council have nothing to gain and everything to lose by supporting Shepards reaper theories.

Sure you have decent reasons to not like the Council. But what do you want instead? If there is nothing in the Councils place the whole galaxy will become like the Terminus systems. A dictatorship based on one strong race would never be accepted by the other races.
In any case what we have now is the Council and it would take at least a century to change into a different way of government that works better.

If they ignore complete evidence of reapers, then yes they should be put on trial. So far, they have no evidence of reapers because vigil broke and the beacons were destroyed. They are convinced that Sovereign is geth because they have not studied the geth so they assume they are capable of making Sovereign.

Now you reminded me.
Who elects Council anyway?

I suppose the councilors are appointed by the respective governments.

The council races membership chose their rep by whatever process works for them. Humans and Asari probably democratic, not so sure about the salarians and turians.

I wouldn't mind the dissolution of the Council system. It seeks to magnify the importance of select races while dictating galactic opinion and roles of other races.

If I had my way, I would add a rotating seat (hanar, elcor, krogan, drell?) and the rachni (if they are interested). The council system is not bad; there was no major conflict for the last 1200 years...quite successful.
