Deeper Friendships in DA2?

I love ME, ME2, and DA:O... but something kinda bugs me.  aside from the romance you can have with one or two characters, everyone else just kinda sputters out on the relationship side of things.  These are my companions and friends, yet unless I'm sexing them up they kinda stop being interesting, and they get nothing else really special going on.  All the non-romancable characters do in most games is give me backstory and talk, there's no real connection outside of the normal 'here's my backstory' -- PC comments on it -- PC does some arbitrary quest for follower -- 'I will follow you to see this through to the end'

Whereas love interests have deeper stories.  You have quests to do for them, and carefully manage how you talk to them, and then you have the lover part of the relationship which OTHER party member comment on and a bittersweet final scene before you go to your final objective.

IDK, I guess I just want more connection to the non-romancable NPCs as well.  I think for ME2 someone mentioned doing a friendship DLC or something, I thought it was a great idea, making the relationship deeper.

While I'm at it, please do not remove party banter from the game as they did with ME2... it made the characters so much more relatable to see they actually TALKED with each other and I was bringing these people together.

You make a good point. But I dont think you will get real deep Dialogs in Dragon age 2 because of this Mass effect wheel and your character being voiced. The Mass effect wheel is the main disapointment for me. But hey I could be completely wrong.

The ME wheel has just as much depth imho, it's just a different way of presenting your choices.

There might  just be something planned for more friendship-type stuff in DA2. Also, we love banter, it's our favorite part of the game to write.

Can you guys talk about the approval/disapproval and gift system yet? Like, is it returning, and will it be at all changed?

M'aiq regrets the lack of ability to share high-fives with his favorite "bro," Sten. Is this the deeper friendship the OP wants?

Yeah, this is something that Mass Effect 2 (which I loved overall) really dropped the ball with. The lack of banter was conspicuous, and the relationship between Shepard and the potential love interests was practically nonexistant unless their specific romance was pursued. That's how we get memes like Garrus' "I'm in the middle of some calibrations", and Jack's "F*CK OFF" - there were no friendship lines. It was either romance or you were shut out.

This is something I hope DA2 doesn't succumb to.

Well the game does span over 10 years, so friendships/romances etc might be greater in depth and all then ever. But I suppose we will have to wait and see eh?

That's awesome quasi-news ("might"...sheesh!). :P

I really liked Alistair, and I felt like he probably had the best "friendly" dialogue (which makes sense, as he and the warden obviously have a lot in common). Losing him as a BFF (I spared Loghain) right before losing Morrigan as a LI (after the ritual) was a huge one-two punch right in the gut (in a good way). In fact patching things up with him is probably second on my list of things I would LOVE to be able to do one day (finding Morrigan is #1 of course).

I definitely agree with the OP. It would be great to have something beyond just "getting along" like you can do with the whole party.

Oh thank you. I had fears DA2 might have been going to the silent squad mates of ME2 system.

I agree with the assessment of ME1 and ME2, but I thought DA:O's friendship system was pretty robust. And as much as I loved the romances, my favorite relationships with the NPCs were actually the friendships--specifically Morrigan's and Shale's. (Sorry, Alistair. Shale's just cooler than you, bless your adorable little heart XD)

It doesn't mean that companions will stick with us throughout the entire ten years, though. Ten years is a long time, things change and people might want to leave and continue on with their lives. DA:O had the crew together for a few months but I imagine people like Sten and Zevran wouldn't have stood at your side for ten years.

True, there were no real friendship paths (aside from Jacob, hilariously enough). At least with say Garrus though, friendship between Shepard and him are implied. With Jack there is no implication of friendship.

I hope there is more AI to AI convo's as well as player banter. But not triggered in obvious locations this time. Always over bridge in dwarf cave and starting village convo's triggered than natural feel.

The worst part of that is that if you were the wrong sex for the character, there wasn't even an option. If you were FemShep, you could never get to know Jack at all.
