Phooey.

Like the fellows who claimed they had NO IDEA that Zevran's offer of a massage in the privacy of their tent was a come-on? ;)

Yes, there are some things we get to do now which will make the intent of a paraphrase clearer, which is nice. Like Mary suggests, the GameInformer article will explain this. Thunder a-plenty to be had, there.

Good to know.

Perhaps there will be clear indications that you are choosing the romance initiating dialogue this time, such as those dialogue options having a different color.

I agree. A simple color change would avoid the problems that people are having regarding "ninja romances."

What if I want to romance a ninja?

Play Jade Empire? Posted Image

Edit: Why can't I get colored text to work?

That's got to be the icon in the middle of the dialogue wheel thing the other thread was talking about.

Although there's also the opposite problem of the ninja romance: the scarily aggressive Shepard romance. Seriously, when I picked the romance dialogue for Garrus, I thought FemShep was going to jump him then and there.

I can understand making the ME2 romance dialogue options painfully obvious after the extensive ninja-romance problems of ME1, but let's not swing too far the other way, mmk?

The problems with romance in ME2 swings in three different directions:
You'd either jump on them, you're not even showing any restraint and it's like you want to sleep with them right there and then. The Jacob paragon options for female Shepard will always lead to flirting and such, it's rather.. odd.

You either romanced them without knowing you romanced them, such was the case with Jack. There was no friend option with her, you'd either be there to help with her problems (romance) or you were there to ****** her off. I had to stop talking with her because there's a dialogue choice at the end that either insults her and pushes her away or makes her your romance option (the middle option still leads to romance)

There's no romance dialogue until you complete their sidequest, there's not one hint of romance until then and after that they'll come on to you and you just say "I love you" and you bed them - end of the romance, nothing else.

I think the problem is that in Mass Effect playing as Paragon means you are playing Captain Kirk, but with Blue wimmen instead of Green.

I thought my FemShep was going to be brought up on sexual harassment charges by Jacob, I swear.

Shepherd: "Jacob. How you doin'? Looking mighty fine, there."
Jacob: "Umm... you know you're my commanding officer, right?"
Shepherd: "Do a little spin for me, baby. Yeah, that's nice."
Jacob: "I feel uncomfortable and awkward."
Shepherd: "Don't worry, baby. Momma bear will make it all better."

Paragons invite them for a hot cup of coffee in the captain's quarters instead.

Nobody uses the middle option, I don't know what that does.

Yeah, I'm getting a little sick of the 11th hour sexing too.  Though if DA2 does legitimately take place over a decade (and not in the Fable2 sense) I doubt that will happen.  I liked that in DA:O you could pace the romance however you wanted.  I hopped into bed with Alistair after Redcliffe and the Circle; it made sense for the PC I was playing, and it was a refreshing change from the "WE'RE ABOUT TO DIE LET'S HAVE SEXY TIEMS"

Nope.  I had to replay the Jacob conversation about three times to figure out which dialog choices didn't result in Shepard having to attend "Workplace Sensitivity" when all was said and done.  It WAS unintentionally hilarious, and it IS possible to talk to Jacob without jumping his bones, but it shouldn't have required three reloads on my part.

To avoid flirting with Jacob, F!Shepard has to start the second conversation with him with the "bottom choice."

Here's a little guide to keep F!Shepard from flirting with Jacob:

After the second conversation with Jacob, there is no possible way to start the romance with him. If you don't romance him, after the second conversation F!Shepard gets the same conversations as M!Shepard.

Here's a quick miniguide on how to avoid Jacob's romance (as well as avoiding being flirty)

Choose these options:

1. Say the word, I back off. (bottom)

1a. Any family? <-- Optional. May be interpreted as flirty. Does not start the romance though.

2. You seem quick to trust me. (middle)

3. The job isn't everything. OR They need discipline.

4. We have nothing to hide. OR We'll give them a show.

>.< oh no Femshep Jacob flashbacks @.@ That was one of the worst parts in ME2. I mean right when she open's her mouth to talk to him it's evidence for an harassment case. I don't blame the writers maybe it was who ever was in charge of the voice actors that told Hale to say the lines like that.

Jacob can keep his "prize" Thank you very much!

I was really happy with how the DA romance was taken and how you could even break up with them at anytime. I can't wait to see what's in store for us in the romance department in DA2 ^.^

Oh thank goodness you guys have taken note of this.  It's so incredibly offputting, and Jacob wasn't even a bad character.

I was paragon as could be and I felt like my character was going to spread her legs and lay back on that table she was leaning on every time I went in to ask about upgrades.  Not cool.

My recommendation to the writers or scripters of this game is to make the triggers for romance more obvious. Dragon Age was certainly better than Mass Effect 1 about what started the relationship (not to mention being able to break up with the love interest), but I have still heard of people "accidentally" romancing someone.

I was playing a female Warden the other day and for whatever reason, I seemed to have started the Alistair romance without even flirting with him. I think saying "Thank you Alistair, that was very sweet" when Alistair said that he enjoyed traveling with the Warden (in the conversation after Goldanna) may have triggered it. I'm not sure how thanking him for his words = romance with him.

This is, of course, remedied just by "breaking up" with him, but I'd like for the developers make the triggers more obvious.

Hmm. I liked it this way. It gave me a feeling Alistair (in my case actually Leliana) had a will of its own with starting to flirt. I mean, in every situation ever (especially with romance) you as a PC have to take the initiative. It was actually pretty fun when the NPC takes the initiative to develop feelings.

I think you may misunderstand. I don't mean that party members cannot flirt without players asking for it. I mean, the relationship should only start if the player asks for it. Alistair can flirt all he wants, but it should be up to the player to decide whether their character actually likes Alistair in that way or wants a relationship with him.

Perhaps not so grotesquely out of character, but little touches.  I loved in ME2 when Jacob and MShep get buddy buddy talking about partying after the mission.  I want the NPCs to actually be like friends if they are my PCs friends.

I fully endorse this idea.  It is an RPG, I should be able to pursue the character or not, not have to guess which dialog option will do something.

PRIIIIZE aside...

I quite liked the DA:O method of romance.  The NPCs could show interest, but it was also pretty obvious which PC responses would promote or cut off the romance.  Except for Morrigan's, maybe, but she's a bit of a Tsundere bless her little confused heart ^_^  Let's hope they keep more or less the DA:O style of romance so we don't end up with an NPC whose sole personality trait is PRIIIIZE.

I would also think it is a good idea if other characters/companions could have a romance with each other, it would make them more "alive" imo. Though I suppose that's a way too big work to do, even more voicing etc.
